Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody was a pure-blood wizard considered the most famous Auror of all time. He was a member of the Order of the Phoenix during both Wizarding Wars. He sacrificed an eye, a leg, and a nose during the First Wizarding War and afterward used a magical eye. Sadly, he died during the early stages of the Second Wizarding War.

Alastor Moody Early Life

Alastor Moody was born into a pure-blood wizarding family sometime before the 1960s. Both of his parents were Aurors, as were many of his ancestors. He was already set on the path for this career from a young age.

This meant that he had to perform extremely well at Hogwarts and get Exceeds Expectation in at least five N.E.W.T. subjects. It is unknown which house he was in. He went on to become an Auror, serving during the First Wizarding War against Lord Voldemort. He also joined the Order of the Phoenix led by Albus Dumbledore, despite it being considered a rogue organization by the Ministry of Magic.

Mad-Eye Hunting Death Eaters

With his dual ties, he was able to bring many Death Eaters to justice. Many people said that half the Death Eaters in Azkaban were there because of Moody. However, he also had a reputation for being extremely paranoid and suspecting everyone.

He’s retired, used to work at the Ministry. I met him once when Dad took me into work with him. He was an Auror — one of the best … a Dark wizard catcher. Half the cells in Azkaban are full because of him. He made himself loads of enemies, though … the families of people he caught, mainly … and I heard he’s been getting really paranoid in his old age. Doesn’t trust anyone anymore. Sees Dark wizards everywhere.

By the end of the First Wizarding War, Moody had lost a leg, part of his nose, and an eye. He replaced his eye with a magical eye that could swivel around and see through the back of his head, and also detect magic. For example, he could see Harry Potter when he was wearing his invisibility cloak.

He retired from the Auror’s office soon after the end of the Second Wizarding War. But he still helped Aurors in training, such as Nymphadora Tonks.

Moody Kidnapped

In the summer of 1994, Albus Dumbledore invited Alastor Moody to join the staff at Hogwarts as Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, a position that he accepted. However, he never made it to the school. Rather, Barty Crouch Jnr, a Death Eater presumed dead, kidnapped Moody.

Crouch kept Moody hidden in his own magical trunk under the Imperius Curse. He then used Moody’s hair to make Polyjuice Potion so that he could assume the ex-Auror’s identity and infiltrate the school. He constantly drank the potion from a hip flask. This was not considered strange, as Moody famously only drank from his own flask as he was paranoid about poisons.

There Crouch worked hard to win Harry Potter’s trust. He also orchestrated events so that Harry would be entered into the Triwizard Tournament and win. This was part of a plan to transport Harry from the school to Lord Voldemort so that the Dark Lord could use the boy to restore his body.

The plan was successful, as Lord Voldemort restored his body. While he killed Cedric Diggory, who was transported with Harry, he failed to kill Harry who was able to transport back to Hogwarts and reveal what had happened.

Crouch Jnr exposed himself when Harry returned and Dumbledore, Professor McGonagall, and Severus Snape were able to find and save Alastor Moody.

The Minister of Magic, Cornelius Fudge, had Crouch punished by the Dementor’s kiss, so he could not confirm Harry’s story. While Dumbledore believed Harry, the Ministry refused to acknowledge that Lord Voldemort had returned. It spent the next year trying to discredit both Dumbledore and Harry.

When Harry confirmed that Lord Voldemort had returned, Dumbledore reformed the Order of the Phoenix, and Alastor Moody rejoined.

He participated in the operation to transport Harry from the home of the Dursleys to the headquarters of the Order at 12 Grimmauld Place. He showed that he was still paranoid at this time, wanting to confirm Harry’s identity before transporting him.

Are you quite sure it’s him, Lupin? It’d be a nice lookout if we bring back some Death Eater impersonating him. We ought to ask him something only the real Potter would know. Unless anyone brought any Veritaserum?

He was often present at Order headquarters, planning with the older members, and also helping Molly Weasley and the school-age wizards clean the house of Dark Magic, as it was the Black Family Home, which had been inherited by Sirius Black. For example, he identified a Boggart hidden in a writing case.

He was among the members of the Aurors who rushed to the Department of Mysteries in the Ministry of Magic when they learned that Harry had been tricked into going there by Lord Voldemort. They provided the six students – Harry, Hermione, Ron, Ginny, Luna, and Neville – with much-needed backup against the 12 Death Eaters that were there to ambush them.

These events exposed the return of Lord Voldemort to the world and forced the Ministry of Magic to acknowledge that Lord Voldemort was back.

When Albus Dumbledore died the following year, Moody became the head of the Order of the Phoenix. He personally put extra protections of 12 Grimmauld Place to prevent Severus Snape, who was responsible for killing Dumbledore and presumed a Death Eater, from ever returning there.

Death of Alastor Moody

The final operation that Moody organized for the Order of the Phoenix was the transport of Harry from the Dursleys to the home of the Weasleys shortly before his 17th birthday, when his magical protection would expire.

The plan was to transport Harry with six members of the Order disguised as Harry using Polyjuice Potion to confuse any Death Eaters who might track the group. Each Potter would be escorted by a member of the Order and would make their way to a different Portkey, that would transport them to the Burrow.

Moody and the Order preparing to transport Harry

While the real Harry traveled with Hagrid, Moody decided to travel with Mundungus Fletcher, who was disguised as Harry. He was the least reliable member of the team, so Moody wanted to keep an eye on him. This proved a fatal decision.

The Death Eaters knew which day the Order would transport Harry, but not that there would be seven Harry’s, so they split up to go after each. When Death Eaters started attacking Moody, assuming that Harry would be with the most experienced Auror, Mundungus disapparated. This left Moody alone and vulnerable and he was hit in the face with a killing curse and fell backward off his broom.

Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour (disguised as another Harry) were nearby and witnessed Moody’s death. Later members of the order went back to retrieve his body, but it was nowhere to be found.

Death Eaters had retrieved his body, and they took his magical eye, which was later used by Dolores Umbridge as a spying device inside the Ministry of Magic to watch workers. When Harry, Ron, and Hermione infiltrated the Ministry to steal the Slytherin Locket Horcrux from Umbridge, Harry also stole back Moody’s eye.

Alastor Moody Personality Type & Traits

Alastor Moody was clearly a brave and talented wizard who believed in himself and in working for justice in the wizarding world. While it is not confirmed anywhere, this suggests that he was probably a Gryffindor.

He seems to have developed a paranoid attitude over the course of his life. But just because you are paranoid doesn’t mean that they aren’t after you. Moody worked as an Auror when many people were hidden Death Eaters, and others were forced to cooperate with them under threat of the Imperius Curse. It was impossible to know who to trust, so his suspicions were justified.

He, like Dumbledore, probably believed that Lord Voldemort was not done after his first fall. So, he retained a healthy paranoia, even if others considered it over the top.

But it is clear that he also felt genuine affection for the people who fought at his side. He once showed Harry a photo of the first Order of the Phoenix, explaining how most of the members had died. While he looked at the photo with nostalgia, Harry found it rather disturbing.

Alastor Moody Zodiac Sign & Birthday

We do not know when Alastor Moody was born, but it was probably well before 1960. He seems to have been a bit older than the likes of Sirius Black and Remus Lupin, who were born in that year. His personality suggests that his zodiac sign might be Scorpio. They are known for sharp intelligence and fierce loyalty, but they also tend to be highly paranoid and suspicious.

Scorpios have big hearts and are sensitive souls, which means they are easily hurt. Being on guard all the time is a natural self-defense mechanism.

Could Alastor Moody Have Survived?

Some people speculate that Alastor Moody could have survived the Death Eater attack. Even Ron holds out hope that Moody was still out there when his body was not found. There are also a few hints in the books that he could have. When Harry, Ron, and Hermione enter Diagon Alley to infiltrate Gringotts, they see a crazy-looking homeless wizard with one eye.

But these theories are unlikely. Bill and Fleur witnessed him being hit square in the face by a killing curse and then suffering a deadly fall from a broomstick.

However, there is a slight possibility that Moody survived. He could have left his eye for the Death Eaters to find in order to fake his own death. But then why did he never return to his friends and comrades?
