Amycus is probably a pure-blood wizard as a member of the Carrow family. He was a member of Slytherin house when he attended Hogwarts.

He must have been born sometime around 1960 to have been old enough to be a Death Eater during the First Wizarding War. But we know that he was not yet an old man when he met Dumbledore on the Astronomy Tower. Dumbledore comments that he may not make it to old age.

He and his sister were among the Death Eaters who managed to avoid Azkaban after the disappearance of Lord Voldemort.

Amycus probably returned to Lord Voldemort when he summoned his followers in the churchyard of Little Hangleton during the closing moments of the Triwizard Tournament when he restored his body. While Voldemort does not mention him, he also does not comment on his absence. He seems to have returned to Voldemort’s inner circle quite quickly.

Amycus was one of the Death Eaters who entered Hogwarts in June 1997 when Draco Malfoy managed to find a way in using the vanishing cabinet. He was among the group that confronted Professor Dumbledore on the roof of the Astronomy Tower and witnessed Severus Snape killing him. He is also the one who noticed that Dumbledore already seemed to be at death’s door at the time of this confrontation.

The following year, when Death Eaters had infiltrated the Ministry of Magic and Snape was made headmaster at Hogwarts, Amycus was made a teacher at Hogwarts along with his sister Alecto.

Amycus Carrow at Hogwarts

Amycus was made Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts. The curriculum was essentially changed to be a Dark Arts course. We know that he forced students to perform the Cruciatus Curse on other students who had been awarded detention. He also seems to have taught the Killing Curse and Fiendfyre, as some of his Slytherin students later attempted to use these.

Along with his sister Alecto, he was appointed a deputy headmaster with responsibility for punishment. She often used the Crutiatus Curse and other forms of corporal punishment on students.

When they realized that they were having no effect on Neville Longbottom, they attempted to kidnap his grandmother to use as leverage. At this point they decided to either kill Neville or send him to Azkaban. This is what forced him to go into hiding in the Room of Requirement. Neville was soon joined by other students.

The Fall of the Carrows

When Lord Voldemort realized that Harry, Ron, and Hermione were hunting down his Horcruxes, he warned the Carrows that they might try and infiltrate Ravenclaw Tower. Alecto went to the tower, and when Harry Potter did turn up there, she touched her Dark Mark to alert Voldemort and the Death Eaters.

This causes Amycus to want to access the tower as well. The door knocker asked him a riddle to gain access to the tower, as was tradition for Ravenclaw: Where do vanished objects go? In his ignorance, Amycus told the door knocker to shut up and forced Professor McGonagall to give him access to the tower.

When he found his sister there, stunned by Luna Lovegood, and no sign of Harry Potter, since he and Luna were under the invisibility cloak, he feared the wrath of Lord Voldemort. He decided to tell him that a group of students had overpowered Alecto and forced her to touch her mark, passing his punishment on to them. When McGonagall told him that this was appalling cowardice that she would not allow, he spat in her face.

In retaliation, Harry used the Cruciatus Curse on Amycus. McGonagall then used the Imperius Curse to force him to carry his unconscious sister and then conjured a net to imprison the two in the air, dangling beneath the ceiling.

The Carrows presumably spent the Battle of Hogwarts detained here and were then sent to Azkaban for their crimes.
