Arabella Figg is a squib, a non-magical person born into a magical family, and a member of the Order of the Phoenix. She lived in Wisteria Walk in Little Whinging, close to Harry Potter, where she could keep an eye on him. She was a lover and seller of cross-bred cats and kneazles.

Arabella Figg was born into a wizarding family sometime before 1960, but she was born without magic. These individuals are known as squibs, and they are usually taught to live in the Muggle world as they are largely outcasts among wizards.

We do not know anything about the wizarding family of Arabella, but she must have remained in contact with them as she was aware of Lord Voldemort and chose to become a member of the Order of the Phoenix.

When Harry Potter’s parents died and he was taken to live with the Durselys on Privett Drive, Arabella Figg moved in nearby to keep an eye on Harry on behalf of Dumbledore.

When the Dursleys went on holiday they would often leave Harry with her. While she would occasionally treat Harry with something like chocolate cake, most of the time she bored him with pictures of her cross-bred cat-kneazles, which she also sold. Harry did not particularly enjoy his time with Mrs Figg.

Why didn’t Arabella Figg tell Harry about herself after he discovered that he was a wizard? Harry asked her exactly that.

Dumbledore’s orders. I was to keep an eye on you but not say anything, you were too young. I’m sorry I gave you such a miserable time, Harry, but the Dursleys would never have let you come if they’d thought you enjoyed it. It wasn’t easy, you know…

She was unable to look after Harry on Dudley’s fateful 11th birthday (where Harry had an encounter with a Brazilian boa constrictor) because she had broken her leg tripping over one of her cats. Later, while she was getting around on crutches, Dudley knocked her down with the new racing bike he had received for his birthday.

Arabella Figg and Dementors in Little Whinging

In June 1995, Lord Voldemort was able to return to his body. Dumbledore immediately started to gather “the old crowd” to reform the Order of the Phoenix and start working against him. He asked Sirius Black to contact a number of people, including Arabella Figg. This presumably confirms that she was part of the Order of the Phoenix in the First Wizarding War.

Later that summer, two dementors attacked Harry and his cousin Dudley near the Dursleys’ home in Little Whinging. Arabella sensed the dementors and knew that Harry was unprotected. Mundungus Fletcher, the wizard who was on duty to protect Harry, had abandoned his post.

She decided to track down Harry and discovered him and Dudley shortly after Harry had repelled the dementors with his Patronus. She escorted Harry and Dudley home and explained to Harry who she was and that the Order of the Phoenix had been watching him. She advised that Harry stay at home and wait to hear from Dumbledore.

Later Harry was called in front of the Wizengamot for a hearing on his use of underage magic in front of the Muggle when he performed the Patronus charm. While Cornelius Fudge and Dolores Umbridge tried to convict Harry and have him expelled from Hogwarts, Dumbledore insisted that he be allowed to call witnesses on Harry’s behalf. He called Arabella Figg.

Arabella confirmed Harry’s disputed claim that he only used the charm because of dementors in Little Whinging. While she could not see the dementors as a Squib, something that Cornelius Fudge pointed out, she could accurately describe how the presence of the dementors felt. This satisfied most of the court and Harry was cleared of all charges.

Arabella’s Figg Later Life

Arabella Figg was close to Albus Dumbledore and attended his funeral at Hogwarts. She does not seem to have participated in the Battle of Hogwarts, no doubt because she was non-magical. She probably survived the Second Wizarding War, but we don’t know what she decided to do with her life.

Arabella Figg Personality Type & Traits

Arabella Figg must be a very strong character as she survived what must have been a difficult childhood as a squib. Non-magical children are generally not accepted in the magical world, and they are sent to normal schools and taught to live alongside Muggles.

This no doubt creates strain within families, and many wizarding families consider having squibs in the family a great source of shame. But Arabella seems to have been able to maintain a connection with the wizarding world despite prejudice, even becoming a member of the Order of the Phoenix.

She was brave to involve herself in a wizarding conflict when she had no magical powers of her own to protect her. She also steadfastly stayed at her post in Little Whinging for more than 15 years. This suggests a generous and loyal soul.

Arabella Figg Zodiac Sign & Birthday

We do not know exactly when Arabella Figg was born, but it must be pre-1960, as she seems to be at least as old as Harry’s parents. Fans speculate that her zodiac sign may be Pisces because of her big heart and willingness to help others.

Mrs Figg was also good at reading people. She knew that the Dursleys would not let Harry spend time with her if they thought he enjoyed it. So, as difficult as it was, she made sure that Harry did not have a good time at her house, though he was of course well treated there.

We are never told anything about Arabella Figg’s wizarding family. When she visits the Ministry for Magic, she notes that they will not have her registered because she is a squib. She is then told to leave details of her parentage when she leaves so that her story can be checked.

Can Arabella Figg see Dementors?

As a squib, Arabella Figg was unable to see the dementors that attacked Harry and Dudley in Little Whinging, but she was able to feel them. She claimed that she could see them, but her description clearly reflects feeling over vision.

Mrs Figg said that she saw them running, but then corrected herself that they were gliding. She also said that they were big and wearing cloaks. But then she said:

I felt them. Everything went cold, and this was a very warm summer’s night, mark you. And I felt… as though all happiness had gone from the world… and I remembered… dreadful things…
