Ariana’s Childhood Trauma

Ariana Dumbledore was the youngest child of Percival and Kendra Dumbledore. She was born in the wizarding village of Mould-on-the-Wold after Albus and Aberforth Dumbledore.

She was immediately gifted with magic from a young age and could practice some spells. One day, when she was just six years old, a group of Muggle boys saw her practicing magic. The scared boys invaded the Dumbledores’ garden and tried to get her to perform the spell again. When she could not, they attacked her.

She was emotionally and mentally traumatized by the incident and was no longer able to control her magic.

It destroyed her, what they did: She was never right again. She would use magic, but she couldn’t get rid of it; it turned inward and drove her mad, it exploded out of her when she couldn’t control it, and at times she was strange and dangerous. But mostly she was sweet and scared and harmless.

Her father Percival attacked the boys in vengeance. He would not explain why he committed the act as he worried that his daughter would be sent to St Mungo’s as her lack of control threatened the Statute of Secrecy. So, he was sent to Azkaban, where he died.

Ariana’s mother Kendra also wanted to keep Ariana with the family, so she moved everyone to Godric’s Hollow, where they were not well known, and cared for Ariana in secret. Neighbor Bathilda Bagshot said that she only knew of the girl’s existence because she saw Kendra taking her out for a midnight stroll once.

Rumors circulated that Ariana was a squib and that Kendra hid her out of shame. Kendra probably did little to deflect this rumor as it helped divert attention away from her daughter’s real problem.

Death of Kendra Dumbledore

When Albus explained the situation of his sister, he said that his mother sacrificed her life to take care of her daughter. And her daughter would eventually be her death. She lost control of her magic one day, and Kendra was accidentally killed.

…when she was fourteen… Ariana couldn’t control it. But my mother was killed.

Aberforth wanted to be able to come home from school to care for his sister as he was the closest to her. But his older brother Albus, who had recently graduated from Hogwarts, insisted that he finish his education and decided to return to Godric’s Hollow to care for Ariana.

Albus Dumbledore would later admit that he resented having to take on responsibility for his sister.

I resented it, Harry. I was gifted, I was brilliant, I wanted to escape, I wanted to shine, I wanted glory. Do not misunderstand me. I loved them… but I was selfish… So that, when my mother died, and I was left with responsibility for a damaged sister and a wayward brother, I returned to my village in anger and bitterness. Trapped and wasted, I thought! And then of course, he came.

Ariana’s Neglect and Death

Shortly after returning to Godric’s Hollow to care for his sister, Albus Dumbledore met Gellert Grindelwald. He was in Godric’s Hollow staying with his aunt Bathilda Bagshot and hiding from his own misdeeds in Europe. As brilliant as Albus himself, the two formed a fast friendship.

Over the course of two months, the two boys bonded over their shared interest in the Deathly Hallows. Grindelwald also shared his ideas about wizarding domination with Dumbledore. Albus was receptive to the idea because of his perceived feelings of being trapped, and his romantic feelings towards Grindelwald.

When Aberforth returned from school, he saw that Albus had been neglecting his sister, and that Albus could not drag Ariana around with him after Grindelwald. He confronted Albus about this, and eventually, Albus agreed with him.

This greatly angered Grindelwald, who attacked Aberforth with the Cruciatus Curse. Albus stepped in to protect his brother, and a fight broke out between the three young men. Ariana also tried to step in, but her lack of control just added chaos to the situation. She was hit by a stray curse and killed.

Grindelwald immediately fled, and Aberforth and Albus never knew whose curse had struck Ariana. Aberforth blamed Albus for what happened, and punched him at the funeral, breaking his nose. The relationship between the two brothers remained strained until the end of Albus’ life.

Portrait of Ariana Dumbledore

Aberforth placed a portrait of Ariana in the Hog’s Head Inn in Hogsmeade where he was the barman. She had another portrait somewhere in Hogwarts and could move between the two.

Later, in 1998, the portrait became a passage between the Hog’s Head Inn and the Room of Requirement in Hogwarts. The Room seems to have created the passageway when some students, led by Neville Longbottom, took refuge there to hide from the Carrows, Death Eaters teaching at the school.

The room is unable to create food and drink, so it created the passage so that the inhabitants of the room could get food and drink from the pub.

Ariana Dumbledore Personality Type & Traits

It is difficult to know Ariana’s true personality, as she was traumatized and transformed at such a young age. While she seems to have been a sweet and loving girl, she was living with constant pain and fear. If she understood what had happened to her and what her family was feeling, she probably felt great guilt.

Ariana Dumbledore Zodiac Sign & Birthday

Ariana was born in 1885 and died at the age of 14 in 1899. This suggests that she must have had her birthday before the end of the summer. Her early magical abilities suggest that she may have been particularly intelligent and in touch with her spiritual side. This suggests that her zodiac sign may be Aquarius.

Was Ariana Dumbledore an Obscurus?

An Obscurus

In Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore we learn that Ariana did become an Obscrurial as a result of her accident We also learn that her Obscurial nature was slowly killing her, but she met her end sooner due to the fight. An Obscurus is a type of magical parasite that forms when a witch or wizard suppresses their magical ability. The magic turns inward on them and eats the person alive.

One fan theory is that the Obscurus that inhabited Ariana Dumbledore moved to another person when she died, specifically Credence Barebone (Aurelius Dumbledore).

None of it made any sense. Why wasn't someone watching her at 6? In fact, why bother having a law about n o underage magic, when kids can't control their magic anyhow? It dopant really make the much sense. But, if kids can't control their magic, you don't leave them to play alone outside. What is the point of blaming the three boys? They dint break her bones or anything. If she was terrorized by kids yelling at her, or even hitting her to that extent, she was crazy long before those boys did anything. How could anyone expect a 17 year old boy to adequately provide care for an unstable crazy child, even without any magic? If Ableforth though that Ariana wasn't getting enough care, why didn't he just do it himself? The list just keeps on going. But what I get out of it is that the person to blame is not those 3 boys, and not Grindelwaldt. Its the Dumbledore family, mostly the parents.
