Astoria Greengrass Early Life

Astoria Greengrass was born into one of the old pure-blood wizarding families. While they were never Death Eaters, they did believe in blood purity and the superiority of wizarding kind, and Astoria would have grown up with these ideas.

Astoria started attending Hogwarts in 1993. We are not told what house she was sorted into, but she may have been in Slytherin like her older sister Daphne.

While we do not know what the school-age Astoria did during the Second Wizarding War, it was probably these events that led her to firmly reject her family’s pure-blood views and adopt an open-minded and tolerant attitude towards muggles.

Early Adulthood

It is not clear when exactly Astoria met Draco Malfoy or how their romantic relationship developed. It was very likely after school, as Pansy Parkinson rarely let another girl near Draco during their time at school.

Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy, Draco’s parents, did not approve of the match. Presumably, her pureblood was acceptable, so she must have taken quite an outspoken view against blood purity and the Death Eater movement to win their disapproval. But Draco stood up to his parents and married Astoria.

Another potential issue may have been that Astoria was noticeably frail. This was the result of a blood curse placed on one of her ancestors, which meant that her life was always likely to be short.

Despite the risks, Astoria wanted to have a child of her own. While Draco said that it was not necessary and his line could end with him, the two did eventually have Scorpius Hyperion Malfoy.

After his birth, false rumours circulated that Astoria has been unable to conceive and so used a time-turner to go back in time and conceive a child with Lord Voldemort. While these rumours were clearly ridiculous, Scorpio suffered bullying at school.

Astoria died in 2019, when her son was in his third year at Hogwarts. He attended the funeral with his best friend Albus Potter.

Astoria Greengrass Personality Type & Traits

While Astoria Greengrass may have had a frail body due to her blood curse, she clearly had a strong mind. She stood up against what she believed to be the bigoted beliefs of her family and followed her own instincts. She was also not afraid to risk her own life for what she thought was important, giving her husband Draco a child.

Astoria Greengrass Zodiac Sign & Birthday

We do not know Astoria’s birthday, but she must have been born in 1981/2 to have been two years behind Draco at school. Her personality suggests that her zodiac sign may be Aquarius. People born under this sign are intelligent and always follow their own instincts. They never follow the crowd and always do what is right for them. Most Aquarians are fearless!

Astoria Greengrass Family Tree

The Greengrass family is numbered among the Sacred Twenty-Eight, the list of British wizarding families still considered pure-blood. They were also well-known for pure-blood and wizarding supremacy ideologies. While the family, in general, were not associated with the Death Eaters, at least one Greengrass was sent to Azkaban for Death Eater activity.

Astoria had an older sister Daphne who was in Slytherin house at Hogwarts in the same year as Draco Malfoy. She may be how Astoria and Draco met. Daphne was probably a member of Pansy Parkinson’s gang at school.

Why did Draco Malfoy Marry Astoria Greengrass?

We can only assume that Draco was deeply in love with Astoria to have defied his family and ignored her illness and potential inability to have children. Her rejection of pure-blood ideals and wizarding supremacy may have been something they bonded over, as Draco also turned away from these following his experiences with Lord Voldemort in the Second Wizarding War.

What was the Blood Curse on Astoria Greengrass?

Blood curses are curses so powerful that they can resurface in future generations of the family of the person cursed. Another witch known to have suffered a blood curse is Nagini. Initially she would occasionally turn into a snake, but eventually she became trapped in serpent form.
