Bartemius “Barty” Crouch was an influential wizard within the Ministry of Magic. During the First Wizarding War, he was the Head of Magical Law Enforcement and pursued and punished Lord Voldemort’s supporters ruthlessly. He was tipped to be the next Minister of Magic, but lost face after his son was exposed as a Death Eater. He was pushed aside, and made the Head of the Department of International Magical Cooperation.

Following the wishes of his wife, Barty Crouch secretly saved his convicted son from Azkaban and kept him hidden. But his son managed to escape his father’s control with the help of Lord Voldemort, who was in the care of Peter Pettigrew at the time.

Following Lord Voldemort’s orders, Barty Crouch Jnr kidnapped the Auror Alastor Moody and assumed his identity to become a teacher at Hogwarts during the Triwizard Tournament. He was then able to enter Harry Potter in the tournament and ensured that he would win, so that he could transport Harry from Hogwarts to Lord Voldemort.

Completing this plan also required that he use the Imperius Curse on his father Barty Crouch Snr. But his father fought the curse and eventually made his way to Hogwarts to try and warn Dumbledore before the last Triwizard task. But Barty Crouch Jnr was able to intercept his father and kill him before he could speak to Dumbledore.

Barty Crouch Snr Early Life

Barty Crouch Snr was born into the pure-blood Crouch family and was a highly ambitious wizard. For this reason, many fans assume that he was in Slytherin House, though this is never confirmed.

Sometime after school, he married a “wispy-looking little witch” that he loved very much, and together they had a son, called Barty Crouch Jnr after his father.

But his ambition meant that Barty spent very little time at home with his wife and son as he was busy trying to make a name for himself in the Ministry of Magic.

Crouch Snr during the First Wizarding War

By the end of the First Wizarding War, Barty Crouch rose to the position of Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. He was responsible for rounding up Death Eaters after the downfall of Lord Voldemort and became the principal judge on the Council of Magical Law that tried Voldemort’s collaborators.

Crouch Snr was known to be ruthless in his approach. He authorized his Aurors to use the Unforgivable Curse on their opponents. He also had a kill rather than capture rule and authorized his functionaries to attack first and ask questions later. As a judge, he sentenced many wizards to life in prison in Azkaban without trial, including Sirius Black.

Crouch hated seeing dark wizards escape his justice. He oversaw the trial in which Igor Karkaroff was set free for implicating other Death Eaters, including Augustus Rookwood. Crouch personally thought that the information provided did not justify the release. He also oversaw the trial of Ludo Bagman, who was acquitted mostly because of his popularity as a Quidditch Player.

One of the final trials that Crouch oversaw was of the Death Eaters who had tortured Alice and Frank Longbottom, the parents of Neville Longbottom, to insanity using the Criciatus Curse. The Death Eaters thought that they had information on the whereabouts of Lord Voldemort. The three Lestrange Death Eaters and Barty Crouch’s own son were suspected.

No defense was presented at the trial. Bellatrix Lestrange admitted her crime and was proud of her work. Barty Crouch Jnr proclaimed his innocence, but his pleas fell on deaf ears. Crouch Snr ignored his pleas, disowned him, and sent him to Azkaban.

Barty Crouch and His Son

Sirius Black remembered Barty Crouch Jnr arriving in Azkaban and confirmed that he quickly lost his mind under the influence of the dementors, who suck all the joy out of victims. Crouch Snr was soon told that his son would die.

Crouch Snr’s wife pleaded with him to help their son, and he agreed to do so out of love for his wife, rather than his son. Their ministry connections meant that they were able to visit the prison for a death bed visit. But they took Polyjuice Potion with them. Crouch Jnr and his mother changed into one another using Polyjuice Potion. She was already close to death herself and so was happy to make the sacrifice for her son. Crouch Snr’s wife died in Azkaban, and he took his son home. Dementors cannot see, so they were not aware of the switch.

Crouch Snr faked the death of his wife and kept his son at home underneath an invisibility cloak and in the care of his house-elf Winky. But Crouch Jnr hated his father and was an avid supporter of Lord Voldemort, so his father had to keep him under control using the Imperius Curse.

Shortly after his son’s death, Barty Crouch Snr also lost his popularity. Not everyone was convinced of his son’s guilt and thought that he had treated him badly. They also blamed his own neglect of his family for what happened to his wife and son. Previously tipped as the next Minister of Magic, Crouch was shunted into a less important role as the Head of the Department of International Magical Cooperation.

At some point after his transfer, Ministry worker Bertha Jorkins called on Crouch Snr at home to deliver some paperwork. She overheard Winky speaking to Crouch Jnr and discovered his secret. Jorkins confronted Crouch Snr and he used an extremely strong Memory Charm on her which seems to have caused her some brain damage and affected her memory.

In the Harry Potter books, we meet Crouch Snr in 1994 when he is playing an important role in organizing the Quidditch World Cup, which took place in England that year, and the Triwizard Tournament, which took place at Hogwarts for the first time in 100 years.

Winky convinced Barty Crouch Snr to let his son attend the Quidditch World Cup. The house-elf sat with Crouch Jnr, hidden under an invisibility cloak, in the same box as Harry Potter.

But, without the knowledge of Barty Crouch Snr, Lord Voldemort had learned that his faithful follower Crouch Jnr was not in Azkaban. Peter Pettigrew captured Bertha Jorkins while she was on holiday, and they managed to extract the secret from her. With Lord Voldemort’s help, Crouch Jnr was able to throw off the Imperius Curse.

In the confusion caused by Death Eaters at the World Cup, Crouch Jnr managed to flee Winky and his father. During the process, he also stole Harry’s wand and used it to cast the Dark Mark into the sky over the World Cup.

Crouch Snr realized what had happened and was able to recapture his son and use the Imperius Curse again to take him home. He also fired his house-elf Winky for her incompetence.

Crouch Snr and the Triwizard Tournament

Thinking that he had his son back under control, Crouch Snr went about organizing the Triwizard Tournament at Hogwarts.

But at the same time, Crouch Jnr had thrown off the Imperius Curse and was impersonating Alastor Moody to become a teacher at Hogwarts. He used his position to enter Harry Potter into the Triwizard Tournament. He also helped Harry to ensure that he would win and would be the first to touch the Triwizard Cup. Crouch Jnr turned the cup into a Portkey that would transport Harry to the cemetery in Little Hangleton where Lord Voldemort was waiting for him to use Harry to restore his body.

In order to pull this off, Barty Crouch Jnr had to cast the Imperius Curse on his father. This was to help him keep his secret, but also manipulate the events of the Triwizard Tournament.

Death of Barty Crouch Snr

Just like his son, Crouch Snr soon started to resist the Imperius Curse. For this reason, Crouch Jnr kept him home from work and Peter Pettigrew was used to supervise him. He started delegating most of his responsibilities to his assistant Percy Weasley. Crouch told people that he was ill. This was suspicious to many, such as Sirius Black, as they knew that Crouch was not the type to take time off work.

Eventually, Crouch Snr half threw off the curse and made his way to Hogwarts to warn Dumbledore. Still confused, he staggered into the Forbidden Forest where he encountered Harry Potter and Viktor Krum. He passed between incoherent messages to his assistant “Weatherby”, talking about his son while he was at school, and painfully pleading to be able to speak to Dumbledore.

Harry left Crouch with Krum as he went to get Dumbledore. During the time that this had taken, Crouch Jnr discovered his father’s escape. He found him, using the Marauder’s Map that he had borrowed from harry as Moody. Crouch Jnr stunned Krum and killed his father. He then transfigured his body into a bone and buried it in Hagrid’s Garden.

Dumbledore learned Crouch Snr’s fate after the events in Little Hangleton cemetery and Harry’s return to Hogwarts using Veritaserum on Crouch Jnr.
