Bellatrix is a powerful dark witch who was one of Lord Voldemort’s most loyal supporters during both the wizarding wars. In between the wars, she was imprisoned in Azkaban for her crimes, where the Dementors slowly drove her insane.

Among her crimes were the ruthless torture of Frank and Alice Longbottom and the murder of Sirius Black. She was eventually killed by Molly Weasley in the Battle of Hogwarts, but not before bearing Lord Voldemort a child.

Bellatrix Black Early Life

Bellatrix was born in 1951 into the pureblood Black family, the daughter of Cygnus Black III and Druella Rosier. She enjoyed a privileged position in the wizarding world and was taught from a young age the importance of blood purity and contempt for muggles.

Bellatrix has two younger sisters, Andromeda and Narcissa, and she was also cousins with Sirius and Regulus Black.

Like most young British witches and wizards, once Bellatrix turned eleven, she started attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She was a member of Slytherin house, like most of her family members.

While at school, Bellatrix was already leaning towards the dark arts and becoming involved with supporters of Lord Voldemort.

Snape… was part of a gang of Slytherins who nearly all turned out to be Death Eaters. Rosier and Wilkes — they were both killed by Aurors the year before Voldemort fell. The Lestranges — they’re a married couple — they’re in Azkaban.

Bellatrix Black-Lestrange Family

There was a lot of pressure in the black family to maintain pureblood traditions. Bellatrix’s youngest sister Narcissa made an acceptable match with Lucius Malfoy. But her other sister Andromeda was disowned by the family when she married the muggle-born wizard Ted Tonks. Bellatrix never spoke to her sister again and considered her a disgrace to the family.

Bellatrix also held her cousin Sirius Black in contempt and considered him a blood traitor because he supported muggles and muggle-born wizards. She was probably also outraged that he was in Gryffindor when he was at Hogwarts.

Bellatrix herself married fellow Slytherin student Rodolphus Lestrange, and so became a member of another wealthy pure-blood family with a strong Slytherin tradition. She does not seem to have loved her husband. She never showed him any affection or spoke or him, and the pair had no children. But they did both become Death Eaters and work together in that capacity.

Bellatrix the Death Eater

When Lord Voldemort first rose to power, Bellatrix Lestrange was among his most loyal supporters. Bellatrix also claimed that he took her under his wing and taught her dark magic himself.

Potter, you cannot win against me! I was and am the Dark Lord’s most loyal servant. I learned the Dark Arts from him, and I know spells of such power that you, pathetic little boy, can never hope to compete!

When Lord Voldemort fell in his attempt to kill Harry Potter, Bellatrix was one of the few Death Eaters who actively tried to find her master.

She received information that the Aurors Alice and Frank Longbottom might have information on his whereabouts. Along with her husband Rodolphus, her brother-in-law Rabastan, and Barty Crouch Jnr they tortured the two with the Cruciatus Curse. But they did not get the information they needed since the pair did not know.

All four Death Eaters were sent to Azkaban for this crime. Frank and Alice Longbottom were left brain damaged and spent the rest of their lives in St Mungo’s Hospital.

Bellatrix was defiant at her trial, assuring the Council of Magical Law, headed by Barty Crouch Snr, that the Dark Lord would return. This was in contrast to many Death Eaters who claimed to be under the Imperius Curse to avoid punishment.

The Dark Lord will rise again, Crouch! Throw us into Azkaban; we will wait! He will rise again and will come for us, he will reward us beyond any of his other supporters! We alone were faithful! We alone tried to find him!

Bellatrix Lestrange in Azkaban and Escape

In Azkaban, Bellatrix became Prisoner 93, and she spent 15 years behind bars. While she was respected by many of the other prisoners for her loyalty to the Dark Lord, she slowly lost her mind under the malevolent influence of the Death Eaters.

When Lord Voldemort was able to restore his body in 1995, he organized the mass breakout of ten of his most loyal supporters in Azkaban, including Bellatrix.

As the Ministry was still denying the return of Lord Voldemort at this time, they instead pointed the finger at previous escapee Sirius Black. But it was interesting that, while the Ministry expended vast resources to try and catch Sirius, including posting Death Eaters at Hogwarts, no similar efforts were detected for the new escapees.

It is suspected that, among other things, the Dementors did not agree to cooperate at this time, as they were already being lured away from the Ministry by Lord Voldemort.

Bellatrix Lestrange and the Battle of the Department of Mysteries

The first time Harry Potter met Bellatrix personally was in the Department of Mysteries. She was one of a group of 12 Death Eaters sent to take the prophecy from Harry. Lord Voldemort had planted false images in Harry’s head specifically to lure him to the Department of Mysteries to retrieve the prophecy. You can only retrieve a prophecy if it is about you.

Bellatrix was enraged when Harry had the nerve to speak Lord Voldemort’s name and when he told the Death Eaters that their Dark Lord was only a half-blood wizard, she immediately went to stun Harry, but Lucius Malfoy deflected her with a Shield Charm to protect the prophecy. Harry also deflected her with a Shield Charm when she tried to summon the prophecy from his hand.

Bellatrix showed how much of her humanity she had lost in the events that followed, threatening to torture Ginny Weasley, then 14, with the Cruciatus Curse if he did not hand over the prophecy. She also threatened to use the same curse on Neville. She relished seeing if he would hold out longer than his parents.

Bellatrix vs the Order of the Phoenix

When the Order of the Phoenix arrived to reinforce the six school-age wizards against the 12 Death Eaters, Bellatrix battled with her niece Nymphadora Tonks and her cousin Sirius Black. It was during this duel that she struck Sirius with a spell that caused him to fall through the veil of Death. She then defeated Kingsley Shacklebolt and fled into the Atrium.

So shocked by the disappearance of his godfather through the veil, Harry pursued Bellatrix to the Atrium and tried to use the Cruciatus Curse on her. This was unsuccessful, and she mocked Harry for his lack of conviction.

Never used an Unforgivable Curse before, have you, boy? You need to mean them, Potter. You need to really want to cause pain — to enjoy it — righteous anger won’t hurt me for long — I’ll show you how it is done, shall I? I’ll give you a lesson — Crucio!

However, in the course of this taunting conversation, Harry revealed that the prophecy had been destroyed and Bellatrix began to fear the anger of her master. She immediately began to plead leniency from Lord Voldemort when he arrived in the Atrium himself.

Not long after Lord Voldemort arrived, Albus Dumbledore also arrived. Bellatrix’s role in the battle was over as she was pinned to the wall by a sentient statue. As Ministry workers began to arrive at the office, Lord Voldemort’s return was revealed. He managed to grab Bellatrix as he apparated away, but the remaining Death Eaters were caught and sent to Azkaban.

Bellatrix and the Plot Against Albus Dumbledore

Following the failure of Lucius Malfoy leading the Death Eaters in the Department of Mysteries, Lord Voldemort charged Draco Malfoy with sneaking Death Eaters into Hogwarts and killing Albus Dumbledore. While this was probably presented as a chance to redeem the family, it was no doubt also punishment, as he expected Draco to fail.

A distraught Narcissa decided to go to Severus Snape and beg his help. Bellatrix objected as she did not trust Snape, and so accompanied her sister. When in Snape’s home, she questioned his loyalty. He pointed out that the Dark Lord trusted him, and so she should as well.

While this did not convince Bellatrix, she was more impressed when Snape agreed to make an Unbreakable Vow to help Draco in his task, and to carry it out himself if he was unable. Bellatrix herself cast the binding spell between Snape and Narcissa. Little did she know that Snape had already agreed with Dumbledore that he would be the one to kill him, and that Dumbledore’s time was already limited due to a deadly curse from one of Lord Voldemort’s Horcruxes.

Nevertheless, Bellatrix also assisted her nephew himself. She taught him Occlumency, as much to protect his thoughts against Snape as other threats at Hogwarts.

However, Bellatrix does not seem to have been among the Death Eaters who entered Hogwarts when Draco opened a passageway between the school and Borgin and Burke’s using a vanishing cabinet. She did not witness the death of Albus Dumbledore.

Bellatrix and the Battle of the Seven Potters

Following the death of Albus Dumbledore, Lord Voldemort took up residence at Malfoy Manor, having released Lucius from Azkaban. Bellatrix was the only member of the family who was happy to have him there, stating that there was “no higher pleasure”.

Despite her loyalty, Lord Voldemort pointed out that Nymphadora Tonks, daughter of a muggle-born and now married to a werewolf, was a blight on her family. Bellatrix assured her master that she was just awaiting an opportunity to deal with the problem.

Nevertheless, when Lord Voldemort said that he would need to borrow a wand from one of his Death Eaters, Bellatrix did not volunteer her own. He eventually took Lucius’ wand, as another punishment for his earlier failure.

Bellatrix then participated in the operation to capture Harry as he was being transferred from the Dursleys to the Burrow shortly before his 17th birthday and the expiry of his mother’s protection. She pursued Nymphadora Tonks, who was with Ron Weasley disguised as Harry using Polyjuice Potion. While Bellatrix tried to kill her family problem, her husband was injured, and their prey escaped.

Bellatrix and the Sword of Gryffindor

When Severus Snape took control of Hogwarts school, Gryffindor’s sword, which was kept in the headmaster’s office, was removed. Lord Voldemort ordered Bellatrix to put it in her vault in Gringotts for safekeeping. However, the sword was a copy. The goblins running the bank were aware of this, but said nothing, as they were angry about wizarding interference in their bank.

Snape later secretly delivered the real sword to Harry Potter, knowing that he would need it to destroy Horcruxes.

Harry, Ron, and Hermione had the sword on them when they were caught by Snatchers. The Snatchers decided to take the group to Malfoy Manor, as they suspected that they might have Harry Potter. Hermione had altered his appearance, rendering them unsure.

Bellatrix was delighted when the group turned up, and Draco Malfoy reluctantly helped her identify Harry Potter. She knew that her master would be very pleased. When the Snatchers objected to her taking the credit for their work, she easily defeated all four of them on her own.

Bellatrix was just about to summon him when she noticed the sword. This immediately sent her into a panic, and she assumed that they had stolen the sword from her vault. She demanded to know what else they had taken, alerting Harry, Ron, and Hermione that there was something else of value hidden there.

Bellatrix and the Skirmish at Malfoy Manor

Bellatrix sent the prisoners to the cellar, but kept Hermione, torturing her to find out how she had gotten the sword. Even in extreme pain, Hermione was able to lie. Bellatrix, believing her, summoned the goblin Griphook, who had also been brought to the Manor. Following a plea from Harry, he also lied and said that the sword in Harry’s possession was a fake.

As these events were taking place, Harry and Ron managed to escape from the cellar. Before this, Harry noticed a blue eye in a fragment of a two-way mirror that Sirius had given him. Not knowing who was on the other end, he asked for help. It was Aberforth Dumbledore who sent the message, and he sent Dobby the house-elf to help them.

As Dobby started transporting the other prisoners to safety, Harry and Ron went to save Hermione. Harry stunned Greyback and Lucius Malfoy, and Ron was able to disarm Bellatrix. But the determined witch held a knife to Hermione’s throat and demanded that they drop their wands, before pressing her Dark Mark to summon Lord Voldemort.

But Dobby created a diversion by causing a chandelier to fall on Bellatrix, and Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Dobby joined hands to transport away. Bellatrix threw her knife at them while they were fleeing, killing Dobby. She was probably aiming at the elf. She had been shocked that he had returned to the home of his former masters, the Malfoys, to betray them. Dobby had exclaimed that he was a free elf.

Bellatrix and everyone else at Malfoy Manor were severely punished for this incident.

Inside the Lestrange Vault

Meanwhile, Harry and the others learned that there was something of value hidden in the Lestrange vault at Gringotts. They also had some of Bellatrix’s hair and her wand. They were able to infiltrate Gringotts, with Hermione disguised as Bellatrix using Polyjuice Potion and the help of the goblin Griphook, who they had also rescued from Malfoy Manor. In this way, they got their hands on the Helga Hufflepuff Cup Horcrux.

Bellatrix’s Pregnancy

At around this time, Bellatrix found herself impregnated by Lord Voldemort. She would give birth to a daughter, named Delphini, sometime before the Battle of Hogwarts. While Bellatrix surely admired and venerated Lord Voldemort, he was clearly incapable of love. Their mating was probably a tactical decision on his part to produce an heir.

As both of Delphini’s parents died in the Battle of Hogwarts, the orphan was raised by Euphemia Rowle. She only learned her true identity from Bellatrix’s husband Rodolphus later in life.

Bellatrix and the Battle of Hogwarts

Bellatrix is next seen alongside her master at the Battle of Hogwarts on 2 May 1998. During the battle, she finally succeeded in murdering her niece Nymphadora Tonks. Her husband Remus Lupin was also killed, leaving their baby son an orphan.

When Harry handed himself over to Lord Voldemort in the woods during the pause in the battle, he used the Killing Curse on Harry, but was knocked out himself because he was unaware that he had inadvertently made Harry a Horcrux all those years ago. Bellatrix offered to help her master after this but was rebuffed.

She also asked if she could be the one who checked Harry for signs of life, but Lord Voldemort sent Narcissa instead. This was a stroke of luck for the living Harry. She was happy to lie for him in exchange for the information that her son Draco was still alive inside the school.

Assuming they had won, Lord Voldemort and the Death Eaters descended on the school with Harry’s body. Bellatrix enjoyed watching her master torment the people there with Harry’s death and was shocked when Harry revealed that he had survived the encounter.

Bellatrix Lestrange Death

When the battle resumed, Bellatrix battled against Hermione, Ginny Weasley, and Luna Lovegood. She was one of the last Death Eaters standing aside from her master. She was able to outclass the three young witches and cast a Killing Curse at Ginny that narrowly missed.

But witnessing this attack on her daughter so enraged Molly Weasley that she ignored Lord Voldemort and took on Bellatrix herself. After a fierce duel, Molly Weasley eventually struck Bellatrix in the chest with a fatal curse.

Molly’s curse soared beneath Bellatrix’s outstretched arm and hit her squarely in the chest, directly over her heart. Bellatrix’s gloating smile froze, her eyes seemed to bulge: for the tiniest space of time she knew what had happened, and then she toppled, and the watching crowd roared, and Voldemort screamed.

Bellatrix Lestrange Personality Type & Traits

Bellatrix seems to have been drawn to the darker side of the magical world from a young age, making her an ideal recruit for Lord Voldemort. He showed her depths of dark magic that she had only imagined previously. This instilled in her an unshakable loyalty. She was one of the few that proudly stood by her master after his first fall.

Her time in Hogwarts seemed to have robbed Bellatrix of any humanity she had. After she escaped, she was only concerned with finding cruel outlets for her pain and pleasing her master, whom she seemed to love and fear in equal measure. She had sacrificed everything for him and would stay the course.

Bellatrix Lestrange Zodiac Sign & Birthday

The Black family tree tells us that Bellatrix was born in 1951, so would have been among Lord Voldemort’s earliest followers. Her personality suggests that her zodiac sign may be Scorpio. People born under this sign are often drawn to the darker elements of life because they are intelligent and seek challenges. This is also one of the most fiercely loyal signs.

But, while Scorpio often seems hard as nails on the outside, they are a sensitive water sign. This would have made Azkaban a particular ordeal for Bellatrix and could explain why she was so damaged by her time there.
