Bertha Jorkins was a British witch who worked at the Ministry of Magic in the Department of Magical Games and Sports. She discovered that Barty Crouch Snr was hiding his criminal son at home, causing Crouch to alter her memory.

Bertha later travelled to Albania where she encountered Peter Pettigrew and the still very weak Lord Voldemort. They were able to extract useful information from her memories that allowed them to use the Triwizard Tournament to kidnap Harry Potter. The process killed Bertha Jorkins.

Bertha Jorkins Early Life and Career

Bertha Jorkins must have been born in the 1950s as she attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry a few years ahead of James Potter and Sirius Black. It is not known which house she was in.

She became known at school for being nosy and a gossip. This often got her in trouble with other students who didn’t like her telling stories about them. She ended up in front of Albus Dumbledore when a boy hexed her because she had teased him for kissing a girl, Florence, behind the Hogwarts greenhouses.

After school, she went on to work at the Ministry of Magic. She floated between a number of different partners. This probably represents senior staff transferring her due to similar nosing and gossiping.

At some point, she was working for the Department of International Magical Cooperation under Barty Crouch Snr. When she visited his home with some papers for him to sign, she saw and heard Crouch’s house-elf Winky speaking to someone invisible. No doubt having a good snoop, she was able to determine that Barty Crouch Snr was hiding his son, who was supposed to have died in Azkaban for being a Death Eater, at their home.

When Bertha Jorkins confronted Crouch Snr, he used a powerful memory charm on her to remove the information. He seems to have gone overboard, causing permanent damage to her brain leaving her extremely forgetful. Crouch also transferred her to the Department of Magical Games and Sports under Ludo Bagman.

Bertha Jorkins Discovered by Lord Voldemort

Jorkins decided to go on holiday to Albania in 1994. There she ran into Peter Pettigrew, who she may have known from school and whom the Ministry assumed was dead. He was able to convince her to take a stroll in the woods with him. No doubt the nosy Jorkins wanted to learn his story.

Pettigrew delivered Jorkins to his master Lord Voldemort, who was living in the Albanian forest in a highly weakened state.

Using torture and Legilimency, Lord Voldemort was able to learn about the plans for the Triwizard Tournament, which Bertha’s department was organizing. He also broke through the memory charm to discover that his loyal servant Barty Crouch Jnr was hidden at the home of his father.

This allowed Voldemort to hatch a plot to place Barty Crouch Jnr at Hogwarts, disguised as new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher Alastor Moody. Crouch then ensured that Harry Potter was entered into the tournament and would be the first to touch the cup. This was a Portkey that was meant to take the winner to the cheering crowd but instead transported him to a graveyard in Little Hangleton where Lord Voldemort was waiting to use Harry’s blood to restore his body.

Bertha Jorkins did not survive the ordeal of her torture and memory probing and died in the summer of 1994. Lord Voldemort used a killing curse on her and used the opportunity to make his snake Nagini a Horcrux.

Ministry efforts to find the missing Bertha Jorkins were lax, with most assuming that she had simply lost track of time and would turn up eventually. But Harry was able to confirm her murder as she was one of the shades that emerged from Lord Voldemort’s wand when Harry dueled with him in the ceremony. She gave Harry words of encouragement in his struggle with the Dark Lord.

Bertha Jorkins Personality Type & Traits

Bertha Jorkins had a reputation for being not very bright, but very nosy and a terrible gossip. However, while she might not have been classically book smart, she was clearly good at putting together puzzle pieces to solve mysteries, like the identity of the invisible person at Barty Crouch Snr’s home.

Listen, I knew Bertha Jorkins. She was at Hogwarts when I was, a few years above your dad and me. And she was an idiot. Very nosy, but no brains, none at all. It’s not a good combination, Harry. I’d say she’d be very easy to lure into a trap.

We do not know Bertha’s birthday, but she must have been born in the 1950s as Sirius Black said that she was a few years ahead of him at school. He was born in 1960.
