Bleach Characters: Heights, Age and Birthday Analysis

Bleach Characters: Heights, Age and Birthday Analysis

Bleach is a 366-episode anime based on the manga created by Tite Kubo.

So many episodes mean a big cast of characters, most of which have had their personal details confirmed either within the story itself or in various Bleach guidebooks.

However, for those characters that have not had their ages, birthdays, or heights officially confirmed, fans have made a rough guess based on other context clues within the show and manga.

Bleach has several time skips, but only two major ones.

The first is a 17 month time skip after Ichigo defeats Aizen.

Then there is a 10 year time skip as Bleach’s final chapter takes place, acting as an epilogue.

Ichigo Kurosaki, is 15 years old when Bleach begins and is 5’8.5″ (174 cm).

After the first time skip, he is 17 years old and has grown to be roughly 5’11.3″ (181 cm). For the final part of Bleach, Ichigo is 10 years older (27 years old).

In her human form, Rukia Kuchiki is 4’8.7″ (144 cm) and begins Bleach at roughly 150 + years old.

But as she is a Soul, it isn’t easy to pinpoint how old she is exactly.

Bleach is considered to be one of the big 3 animes of the early 2000s, up there with Naruto and One Piece.

It follows Ichigo through several main stories as he becomes a Shinigami after a Soul Reaper (Rukia) accidentally passes on her responsibilities to Ichigo in the human world.

Ichigo Kurosaki – July 15th

Ichigo Kurosaki

At the beginning of Bleach, Ichigo Kurosaki is a hot-headed 15 year old. With a height of an average 5’8.5″ (174 cm), Ichigo’s anger is less intimidating and more stubborn. Ichigo becomes much more muscular once he becomes a Shinigami. However, it is not until after the first time skip (when he turns 17) that his height catches up with his stronger abilities, standing at 5’11.3″ (181 cm). In the final chapter, Ichigo is 27 years old.

Most teenage anime protagonists tend to be driven by kindness, wanting to do good for the world. Ichigo is no different. Behind his cold demeanor, he has a big heart. Part of his closed-off nature comes from his rejection of being part Soul Reaper, but as the series progresses, Ichigo realizes how he can use his Soul Reaper powers for good.

When he was younger, Ichigo found out that his name meant to protect, which Ichigo took to mean that it was his duty to protect his family. Even as an angsty teen, Ichigo is constantly fighting to become better at protecting those around him. When someone he loves is hurt, Ichigo can be lethal.

Rukia Kuchiki – January 14th

Rukia Kuchiki

As Rukia Kuchiki is a Soul, there is no official confirmation of her age. However, fans speculate that she is about 150 + years old. Rukia is 4’8.7″ (144 cm) and can easily pass as one of Ichigo’s classmates when using her human form.

Rukia is why Ichigo has Shinigami powers at all, passing them onto Ichigo to save him at the beginning of the series. Without her abilities, Rukia is unable to access the Soul Society. So, she has to pose as a human – something she is very good at doing even though she has no idea how the human world works.

Being born lower-class and then adopted into a nobility status, Rukia treats everyone the same and doesn’t turn her nose up at those now below her. She is charismatic but finds it difficult to make friends as her nobility requires tight emotional control, making her appear distant. In the human world, Rukia learns to loosen this control a little.

Orihime Inoue – September 3rd

Orihime Inoue

Orihime Inoue is one of Ichigo’s closest friends and classmates, also 15 years old when first introduced to the show. Her height is an average 5’1.8″ (157 cm), but she is more physically mature than others in her year. Orihime doesn’t physically change in the series, though she does get stronger during fights.

Where Ichigo is quick to anger and is stubborn, Orihime is attentive, kind, and arguably more mature. She acts as Ichigo’s balancing force and is very attuned to how he is feeling. This connection is partly why Orihime has such a crush on Ichigo, though her character development is not entirely dependent on her relationship with Ichigo. She is as independent and assertive as she is loving.

Renji Abarai – August 31st

Renji Abarai

Like Rukia, Renji Abarai is a Shinigami and does not have a specified age. But he is thought to be roughly 150 + years old. His height of 6’2″ (188 cm) makes Renji seem much older than Rukia, even though they are roughly the same age. When a human, Renji appears closer to 22 years old.

Initially, Renji is set up as an antagonist. He is tasked with finding Rukia when she is lost in the human world. As they were once close companions before Rukia’s adoption into nobility, Renji takes this task as a personal mission.

Renji is just as stubborn as Ichigo, but he is also cocky, which irks Ichigo greatly. It is not until Rukia is in danger that Renji and Ichigo put aside their differences to rescue her, making Renji’s role in Bleach shift from antagonistic to protagonistic.

Uryū Ishida – November 6th

Uryū Ishida

Though he is the same age as Ichigo (15 years old at the start of Bleach), Uryū Ishida is much more powerful. As a Quincy, he has a deep hatred for Soul Reapers and can easily fight against them even though he is much shorter than many Shinigamis at 5’7.3″ (171 cm).

Uryū’s moral code and the quest for justice are stronger than his hatred for Shinigamis. He actively protects Rukia from Renji when Renji is still an antagonist despite Rukia being a Shinigami.

Like Renji, Uryū acts as an antagonist for a short while. However, he quickly becomes close with Ichigo and a few other Soul Reapers after begrudgingly agreeing to work with him to kill Hollows.

Yasutora Sado – April 7th

Yasutora Sado

Despite being one of the tallest humans in Bleach at 6’5.6″ (197 cm), Yasutora Sado’s height is far more intimidating than his personality. He is a year older than Ichigo at 16 years old when the series begins (then turning 18 after the time skip) and is one of his close friends.

Yasutora is often bullied because he is an easy target. His quiet, drawn-in personality means that regardless of his very muscular build and his blatant physical ability to fight back against his bullies, Yasutora does not.

However, that does not mean that he is not brave. Yasutora is very protective of his few friends and has the brains as well as the brawn to be detrimental in Ichigo’s fight against Hollows.

Sōsuke Aizen – May 29th

Sōsuke Aizen

It is never officially confirmed how old Sōsuke Aizen is, but it is hinted that he has lived for at least 300 + years. Sōsuke remains 6’1.2″ (186 cm) throughout Bleach, but his appearance changes as his secrets are revealed, and he becomes even more of a villain.

Sōsuke begins Bleach as a captain in the Soul Society, leading the 5th Division of Gotel 13. At first, Sōsuke appears a rather humble man, treating those he commands with kindness. But when Sōsuke’s real intentions come to light, his conforming facade cracks and his true colors begin to show.

He is a manipulative Soul, a traitor to the Soul Society, viewing himself as better than the King of Souls. That is why when he sees how powerful and capable Ichigo is, Sōsuke becomes obsessed with being better than a human no matter what, as Ichigo threatens to disassemble the view he has of himself.

Yhwach – December 25th

Yhwach

More than 1,200 + years old, Yhwach (or simply, The Almighty) is the son of the King of Souls and the Father Of Quincy folk. Yhwach remains 6’5″ (195.6 cm) for the whole series, but how he chooses to present himself evolves with each terrible act he commits.

As the Father of Quincy, Yhwach has a deep hatred for the Shinigami (though he respects the first Gotei 13 generation for how much they made him fear them).

Yhwach does have a fondness for his people but is still an antagonist in his own right, harming his people if he sees fit. Including when he steals the power of those Quincys that he deems impure, causing many of them to die.

Yhwach’s ultimate goal is to destroy the Human, Soul, and Hollow worlds and create a new world that does not fear death, which is a terrifying concept.

Kūgo Ginjō – November 15th

Kūgo Ginjō

It is unclear how old Kūgo Ginjō is as he is a Soul, specifically a Fullbringer. However, at 6’1.6″ (187 cm), Kūgo looks like he is in his late 20’s/ early 30’s. Because he is the leader of the Xcution, Kūgo dresses classy, which makes him appear older and more sophisticated than other Souls.

As a Fullbringer, Kūgo can manipulate souls. In the world of Bleach, souls reside in both living things and objects such as chairs or lampposts.

Kūgo knows that he has immense power, which he uses to get what he wants. But as manipulative and calculated as he is, Kūgo watches out for his friends and team. He even avoids hurting innocent civilians, moving battles away from highly populated areas.

Shūkurō Tsukishima – February 4th

Shūkurō Tsukishima

Like Kūgo, Shūkurō Tsukishima is a Fullbringer and does not age the same as humans or Souls. However, he has the appearance of a 25-ish-year-old. Shūkurō is taller than Kūgo at 6’6″ (198 cm) and, arguably, far more terrifying.

No matter if he was gravely injured or watching his victims relive the fake trauma he created, Shūkurō was able to distance himself from any situation and appear unfazed. That is until Kūgo dies and Shūkurō’s undying devotion to his leader makes him lose all emotional control.

Shūkurō’s sociopathic tendencies are what make him one of the scariest antagonists in Bleach.

Riruka Dokugamine – April 14th

Riruka Dokugamine

One of Xcution’s top Fullbringers, Riruka Dokugamine’s age has not officially been confirmed. However, her very short height of 5’1.4″ (156 cm) makes her appear much younger than the other Xcution members but no less deadly.

Riruka acts as childish as she looks, quickly losing her temper and throwing tantrums when someone argues against her.

Like most other Fullbringers, Riruka discovered her soul manipulative abilities at a young age but did not know how to use them productively until Kūgo found her. Though Riruka insists that Kūgo’s aid did not make her loyal to him or Xcution, she is only still involved with the group for her own gain.

Jugram Haschwalth – December 14th

Jugram Haschwalth

The left-hand man to Yhwach, Jugram Haschwalth is predicted to be a few years younger than the Father of Quincy at 1000 + years old. Jugram is also noticeably shorter than Yhwach at roughly 6’1″ (185.4 cm).

Jugram was not always cold and calculated. Some flashbacks in the anime show Jugram as quite timid until he learns his importance to Yhwach as a Quincy who shares the same power. When he started to work with Yhwach, Jugram became a lot more confident and balanced, controlling his powers better.

Yukio Hans Vorarlberna – December 23rd

Yukio Hans Vorarlberna

Yukio Hans Vorarlberna is assumed to be the youngest of Xcution’s members though his actual age is unclear. This is based on his overall experience and appearance and being the shortest of the group at 5’0.6″ (154 cm) – 2 cm shorter than Riruka.

Unlike many other Xcution members, Yukio is more lighthearted than his emotionally distant peers (probably because he is presumably young and naive). However, he is just as cruel as other Fullbringers.

He takes great pride that he stole his parent’s fortune, which led to their joint deaths. But just like a child, Yukio can become quite cowardly when faced with a lethal threat.

Byakuya Kuchiki – January 31st

Byakuya Kuchiki

Like most Shinigamis in Bleach, it is unclear how old exactly Byakuya Kuchiki is. However, it is confirmed that he was a teenager over 10 years ago and remained a teenager for 60 years, making him roughly 200 + years old when he debuts in Bleach. Byakuya is one of the shorter Shinigamis at 5’10.9″ (180 cm).

Byakuya is the clan leader of the Kuchiki Clan and has the arrogance of a self-obsessed aristocrat. He puts the law above all else, which he enforces as the Captain of Gotei 13’s 6th Division.

However, Byakuya has a soft spot for his presumably younger adoptive sister (Rukia) and does what he can to keep her safe while still following the law.

Kisuke Urahara – December 31st

Kisuke Urahara

Kisuke Urahara is said to have been made captain of the 12th Division 110 years before Bleach began. Based on this and that Kisuke grew up with Yoruichi Shihōuin, he is estimated to be about 400 + years old. He is also an average height for a Shinigami at 6″ (183 cm).

Though he is a Soul, Kisuke permanently lives in the human world, running his Shinigami specialist shop. His time as a Division Captain turned Kisuke from an unconfident individual into an intelligent, capable captain.

He is very passionate about his shop, which can make him seem idiotic at times, but Kisuke is wiser and more cunning than most think. He has had hundreds of years to master getting what he wants without getting his hands dirty.

Yoruichi Shihōuin – January 1st

Yoruichi Shihōuin

Yoruichi Shihōuin grew up alongside Kisuke, making her roughly 400 + years old. She is much shorter than her friend at 5’1.4″ (156 cm). However, Yoruichi commanded just as much respect as Kisuke as the leader of the Onimitsukidō and Captain of the 2nd Division.

Yoruichi has the unique ability to turn into a cat, which is the perfect form for her as she is just as intelligent but playful as a real cat.

Outside of her cat form, Yoruichi is a valuable asset to Kisuke, his shop, and Ichigo as she has a vast knowledge of the Soul Society. This is because of her previous position as captain and her noble status.

Tessai Tsukabishi – May 12th

Tessai Tsukabishi

Tessai Tsukabishi’s huge 6’6.7″ (200 cm) height once made him an intimidating captain heading the Kidō Corps. Tessai is at least 200 + years old, as confirmed when he says it has been 200 years since he has heard the word Quincy.

Like most who work alongside Kisuke in the human world, Tessai takes great pride in being a loyal companion and worker to Kisuke.

He was once just as important as Kisuke in the Soul Society, but Tessai is more than happy to give the responsibility of being a leader to Kisuke and take more of a backseat himself. However, he will keep other workers in check when Kisuke is busy, which is an easy task thanks to his years as a captain.

Tōshirō Hitsugaya – December 20th

Tōshirō Hitsugaya

Tōshirō Hitsugaya is one of the shortest Division captains at only 4’4.4″ (133 cm). His shorter height and younger appearance are reflective of Tōshirō being a younger Shinigami than most at approximately 110 + years old.

However, just because Tōshirō appears to be younger does not mean that he is unfit to be the captain of the 10th division. Tōshirō’s maturity is a stark contrast to his appearance. He is severe and respected by his subordinates, who don’t dare joke about his height in front of Tōshirō’s face.

The only 2 people who get away with not addressing Tōshirō as Captain are Ichigo and Momo (a close childhood friend of Tōshirō’s and his foster sibling.

Momo Hinamori – June 3rd

Momo Hinamori

Momo Hinamori is thought by fans to be a couple of decades older than Tōshirō at roughly 150 + years old. This may just be because she is noticeably taller than him at 4’11.4″ (151 cm).

As Tōshirō’s closest friend, Momo is a playful, balancing force. She serves as Aizen’s faithful lieutenant but is more likely to be found reading a book or drawing than fighting.

However, Momo holds an obsessive loyalty to Aizen. So much so that she is more than willing to forgive Aizen for stabbing her as she was adamant that he was manipulated to do so.

Rangiku Matsumoto – September 29th

Rangiku Matsumoto

Rangiku Matsumoto is one of the few female characters in Bleach who has a much curvier and fuller body. She is a comedic contrast to Tōshirō, serving as his lieutenant despite being much older than him at roughly 220 + years old and over a foot taller (5’7.7″ (172 cm)).

Where Tōshirō is all work and no play, Rangiku would rather drink and shop than commit to dull lieutenant duties. However, Rangiku is a capable and intelligent Shinigami, using her more feminine figure to get what she wants – especially if it will help Tōshirō.

After all, Rangiku convinced Tōshirō to pursue being a captain in the first place, so she is extremely loyal to him and his success.

Kenpachi Zaraki – November 19th

Kenpachi Zaraki

Kenpachi Zaraki is tall for a Shinigami at 6’7.5″ (202 cm). He is also extremely muscular, reflecting his brutal fighting tendencies. Kenpachi is thought to be one of the older Shinigamis at 2000 + years old, though he appears to be in his late 30’s when in the human world.

It is not just his status as captain of the 11th Division that has earnt Kenpachi respect but also how violent he tends to be in a fight. However, he will not kill an opponent who is too injured to fight back as he prefers fighting for fun than for the sake of violence.

Despite his knack for fighting, Kenpachi does have a tender side that he only shows to a few people, such as his first lieutenant (Yachiru Kusajishi).

Yachiru Kusajishi – February 12th

Yachiru Kusajishi

It is unclear how old Yachiru Kusajishi is, but fans speculate she could be up to 100 + years old. Yachiru is presumed to be younger than most Shinigamis because of her 3’6.9″ (109 cm) height and her tendency to act much more immature, even as a Division lieutenant.

Yachiru is one of the few people Kenpachi treats with love and care, creating a father/ daughter bond. As sweet and childlike as Yachiru may often come across, she has a mischievous side.

She can easily sneak into a place undetected (partly due to her height) and has a vast knowledge of secret tunnels and a great sense of direction, which is particularly useful to Kenpachi, who gets lost easily.

Ururu Tsumugiya – September 9th

Ururu Tsumugiya

Ururu Tsumugiya is one of the youngest characters in Bleach at only 13 years old when she is first introduced to the show. She may only be a few years younger than Ichigo, but Ururu appears much more youthful as she is only 4’7.5″ (141 cm). She does age and grow within the show, but is it unclear how tall Ururu gets.

Ururu is very polite and eager to please those around her – especially her boss, Kisuke. This often leads to her taking on more work in the shop than is fair.

At first, Ururu seems like a timid and quiet child, but she has higher spiritual power than many other humans in Bleach. Ururu grows more of a backbone as the series progresses but remains soft and reserved.

Jinta Hanakari – April 4th

Jinta Hanakari

Jinta Hanakari is said to be 3 years younger than Ururu in the Bleach manga, making him 10 years old at the start of the show. This age gap explains why Jinta is shorter than Ururu at 4’1.6″ (126 cm). Jinta is one of the only characters to grow within the show, but his final height is unclear.

Just like everyone else working at Kisuke’s Shinigami shop, Jinta is expected to do his fair share of labor for the shop. However, Jinta is very much a slacker.

Despite being younger than Ururu, Jinta can bully her into doing his work for him. But though they bicker constantly, Jinta and Ururu help each other understand their spiritual powers.

Suì-Fēng – February 11th

Suì-Fēng

Suì-Fēng is thought to be at least 250 + years old. Dedicating most of her life to training, Suì-Fēng is the captain of the 2nd Division and also Onmitsukido’s commander-in-chief when Bleach begins. Though she is only 4’11.1″ (150 cm), she is a powerful force.

Out of any Bleach character, Suì-Fēng is the most firm in her beliefs and motivations. However, that is not necessarily a bad thing.

Suì-Fēng has worked hard for her place in the Soul Society and continues to use her 250 + years of unwavering dedication to her goals to do what is right. She has more than earnt her titles as captain and commander-in-chief and is a valuable asset to her peers.

Shunsui Kyōaku – July 11th

Shunsui Kyōaku

Shunsui Kyōaku is one of the oldest Shinigamis in Bleach, just over 2000 years old. He is a very tall (6’3.6″ (192 cm)) and devilishly handsome character but does not abide by typical masculine clothing choices, often wearing flowery kimonos.

With so many years of Shinigami experience under his belt, it makes sense that Shunsui is not only the captain of the 1st Division but is also the overall Captain / Commander of the Gotei 13.

He is possibly the best choice for the role of leader as he is laid back enough not to be overbearing to his subordinates and has a genuine love for peace. Even if a fight is inevitable, Shunsui will avoid it where he can.

Hiyori Sarugaki – August 1st

Hiyori Sarugaki

Hiyori Sarugaki is quite young for a Shinigami at roughly 280 + years old. Though she is only 4’4.4″ (133 cm), Hiyori doesn’t have a sense of immaturity in her appearance like other shorter Shinigamis. Instead, she has the appearance of a 17 year old.

Like Ichigo, Hiyori has little respect for those around her. This is not a new trait as flashbacks show her mistreating Shinji Hirako when she was a lieutenant in the Soul Society, even though he outranked her.

However, it is not just Shinji who has to put up with Hiyori’s wrath. She is a generally angry person with little interest in either Shinigamis or humans. She is the definition of small and feisty.

Karin Kurosaki – May 6th

Karin Kurosaki

Karin Kurosaki is Ichigo’s younger sister by 6 years, making her 11 years old when the show begins. Though one of the youngest characters in Bleach, Karin is an average height for a human at 4’5.5″ (136 cm) and has a big personality.

Since her mother’s death, Karin has become a lot more emotionally resilient, not willing to push her troubles onto her family. However, she has a lot of love and cares for her family, acting as the voice of reason in most situations.

Karin has the same ability to see spirits as Ichigo but refuses to acknowledge them in the same way.

Yuzu Kurosaki – May 6th

Yuzu Kurosaki

Yuzu Kurosaki is Karin’s twin, making her 11 years old when she is first introduced to Bleach. However, Yuzu is not identical to Karin. She has much lighter hair and is slightly taller than Karin at 4’5.9″ (137 cm).

Though they are twins, Yuzu is the polar opposite of Karin. She is a lot less outgoing and more domestic, taking it upon herself to do her mother’s tasks after she dies.

But she is still a child and can be playful when she has the time to spare. Yuzu does have some spirit-seeing abilities, but they appear much fainter to her than they do to Karin or Ichigo.

Retsu Unohana – April 21st

Retsu Unohana

Even when Retsu Unohana was a captain of the 4th Division before the events of Bleach took place, she was already one of the older Shinigamis. She was easily 2000 + years old when Bleach began. Retsu may seem sweet and innocent at first, with a humble height of 5’2.6″ (159 cm), but she is quite the opposite.

Retsu used to go by Yachiru Unohana and was once one of the evilest Souls to have even been a part of the Soul Society. However, as Retsu, she carries a much calmer persona, wanting to heal people rather than hurt them.

She is still feared, but her duty takes precedence over her violent nature. That is until she reverts back to her true nature.
