What Is Boruto’s Eye? How Did He Get It? The Jougan Explained

The Naruto franchise is well renowned for the incorporation of unique eyes. Not just wonderfully rendered, vibrant eyes but eyes with a unique type of power. The eyes are termed “Dojutsu,” meaning “eye techniques.”

So far, we’ve seen various types of dojutsu, from the popular Sharingan, Byakugan, Rinnengan, and now Jougan.

The Jougan is the most recent dojutsu introduced in the spinoff series of Naruto, Boruto: Naruto Next Generations.

Although this eye has only ever been used by Boruto Uzumaki, it is considered an Otsutsuki clan Dojutsu. But the question still stands, what really is the Jougan?!

What Is Boruto’s Eye?

Boruto’s eye is called the Jougan, which translates to “pure eye.” It is a unique dojutsu (eye technique) that allows him to see and perceive things that are normally invisible to the naked eye, such as chakra pathways, interdimensional portals, and spirits.

The Jougan also allows him to sense and track objects and people from great distances.

The origins and full potential of the Jougan are not yet fully explained in the Boruto manga and anime series.

It is hinted that the eye has ties to the Otsutsuki clan, a powerful and mysterious alien race that has played a significant role in the Naruto and Boruto storylines.

What Are The Jougan Abilities?

So far, little has been revealed about the true power of the Jougan. We’ve only seen glimpses of its true abilities, and at this time, Boruto still doesn’t have complete control over it. Here’s what we’ve learned so far:

The Jougan, like the Sharingan and Byakugan, allows Boruto to sense chakra and visualize the pathway system. The Jougan also has the power of space-time ninjutsu, which allows Boruto to manipulate and travel beyond dimensions.

jougan abilities

That’s all that we know so far. However, as the series progresses, we can expect to see more about the Jougan, which will eventually become the strongest dojutsu in the entire franchise.

How Did Boruto Get the Jougan?

It hasn’t been explicitly stated as to how Boruto got the Jougan. However, there have been a lot of different theories about how it came to be.

Some think the Jougan is an evolved version of Tenseigan, like how Sharingan evolves into Rinnegan. Some think Toneri Otutsuki gave it to Boruto, while others think it’s a unique dojutsu passed down from his parents (Hinata and Naruto).

Let’s take a look at these theories:

First Theory

The spinoff, The Last: Naruto The Movie, revealed that Hinata is a direct descendant of Hamura Otsutsuki. In Naruto Shippuden, Hagoromo Otsutsuki gifts Naruto part of his chakra.

Boruto Jougan

This clearly states that Boruto is related to Kaguya from both sides of his family, which is why many fans believe the Otsutsuki chakra was also passed down to him; as a result, evolving his Byakugan into a Jougan.

Second Theory

Many fans feel that Toneri Otsutsuki played a significant role in the creation of the Jougan. In the spinoff, The Last: Naruto the Movie, we were introduced to Toneri Otsutsuki, a descendant of Hamura Otsutsuki and the sole survivor of the Otsutsuki clan’s branch family on the Moon.

He kidnapped Hinata and subjected her to some inexplicable experiments that altered her DNA. Some fan theories speculate that this has something to do with Boruto’s eye (The Jougan).

Third Theory

The third theory also revolves around Toneri Otsutsuki, with some fans speculating that he must have handed Jougan to Boruto for the better welfare of the world.

He must have reasons to believe Boruto is the only one capable of taking on this enormous duty and unlocking the full potential of the Jougan’s power.

In episode 8 of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, Toneri appears in Boruto’s dream to pass a message to him; He claims that Boruto will serve as a ray of hope in the face of the impending doom that will inevitably come to pass. We haven’t been provided much information about why he’s so interested in Boruto, but it’s most likely related to the Jougan.

Some fans disagree with this theory, saying Toneri didn’t grant Boruto the Jougan but helped him awaken it via the prophetic dream. Even if all of these theories are plausible and relevant, we still have to wait until explicitly stated in the series how he truly got the Jougan.

Is Jougan Anime Only?

The Jougan isn’t anime only. Although most fans mistake Boruto’s eyes for byakugan in the manga because of the black and white manga color change, it’s actually the Jougan.

For one thing, there is no such thing as “Anime only in Boruto.” The anime is considered canon; The additions are canon, and they serve to better explain what is happening in the manga.

Who Knows About Boruto’s Eye?

Even though only a few characters have seen the Jougan, no one knows what it is. The Otsutsuki, on the other hand, instantly recognizes the Jougan; This has led to speculations that the Jougan is a long-lost Kekkei Genkai.

Since the Otsutsuki’s are the only ones who understand Boruto’s eye, he may have to turn to them for answers.

Why Does Boruto Have Jougan in One Eye?

Most fans believe Boruto only unlocked one Jougan because that was all his body could manage with his natural chakra reserves. It’s also possible that this isn’t a two-eye dojutsu; take Isshiki and Sasuke for example.

Perhaps just one eye can have this power, or one eye hasn’t reached that point yet. The theories go on and on, which can only be cleared by the writer. Till then, we wait.

When Does Naruto Find Out About Boruto’s Eye?

Naruto still doesn’t know everything there is to know about the Jougan, but he believes that Boruto wasn’t lying about getting a new eye like the byakugan.

Boruto initially believed he had awakened his byakugan. Still, his grandfather clarified that it wasn’t the byakugan, and yet Naruto believed he had a new eye or he wouldn’t be trying so hard.

Is Boruto’s Eye Byakugan or Tenseigan?

Boruto eyes is neither byakugan or tenseigan. He possesses a unique dojutsu named the “Jougan”. This eye is exclusive to him alone and is somewhat linked to the Otsutsuki, as they are the only ones aware of its great power and the impending doom that comes with it.

Many fans have pointed out the similarities between the Byakugan and the Jougan. They both share similar abilities and appearances. The Jougan is also only known to the Otsutsuki’s, all who have the byakugan.

With this, fans assume the Jougan is an enhanced version of the byakugan despite being told otherwise.

Is Jougan a Kekkei Gengan?

The fact that no one knows about the Jougan except the Otsutsuki suggests that it isn’t a human trait, but rather a Kekkei Genkai for the Otsutsukis. As a result of the way even the most powerful Otsutsukis are taken aback by the sight of Jougan, it has been speculated that Jougan may be an ancient Kekkei Genkai that has not been seen in several generations.

How Strong Is the Jougan?

While the scope of the Jougan’s abilities has yet to be revealed, we do know that it is powerful enough to rival the Otsutsuki, putting it on the level with the Rinnegan and other top-tier dojutsu. The Jougan has limitless potential to become the series’ strongest dojutsu.
