Buckbeak Biography

Buckbeak was a Hippogriff, a half horse and half eagle magical creature. He was brought to Hogwarts in 1993 by Rubeus Hagrid to share with students in his first Care of Magical Creatures class along with some other Hippogriffs.

Hagrid informed the class that Hippogriffs are extremely proud and that you need to approach them with respect and be careful not to offend them.

Harry managed to approach Buckbeak successfully, and the Hippogriff even let Harry ride him.

Buckbeak flew him once around the paddock and then headed back to the ground; this was the bit Harry had been dreading; he leaned back as the smooth neck lowered, feeling he was going to slip off over the beak, then felt a heavy thud as the four ill-assorted feet hit the ground.

Sadly, in the same class, Draco Malfoy decided to taunt and insult the creature. Buckbeak lashed out and injured Draco’s arm.

Draco played up the seriousness of his injury because he disliked Hagrid and to gain compensation in his other classes.

His father, Lucius Malfoy, also reported the incident to the Ministry of Magic to try and discredit Albus Dumbledore as Headmaster and his choice of teachers.

Lucius Malfoy was able to use his influence at the Ministry to get Buckbeak sentenced to death, despite Hagrid trying to defend him in the courts. The execution was to be carried out by Walden McNair, who came to Hogwarts with Minister for Magic Cornelius Fudge.

Buckbeak Escapes Execution

It seems that the execution was carried out in front of Hagrid’s cabin. But this was on the same night that the Azkaban fugitive Sirius Black was found at Hogwarts.

Hermione Granger and Harry Potter used a Time-Turner on this night to go back and save Sirius. They also used the opportunity to save Buckbeak.

The pair headed to Hagrid’s cabin as the Minister for Magic and executioner arrived. They let them see Buckbeak as they entered the cabin to speak to Hagrid so that they would not think that Hagrid was involved.

Buckbeaks Execution in Harry Potter

Then, while the group was inside, they lured Buckbeak away. While the executioner was frustrated to lose his prey, Dumbledore, who was also present, dismissed this as a happy accident.

Harry, Hermione, and Buckbeak hid in the Forbidden Forest. But realized that they would be in the path of Remus Lupin when he turned into a werewolf. So, Hermione hid with Buckbeak in Hagrid’s cabin while Harry went to the lake to deal with the Dementors.

Harry prevented the Dementors from giving Sirius the Dementor’s kiss. But Sirius was still arrested and taken up to Filius Flitwick’s office.

They used Buckbeak to fly up to the office so that they could save Sirius and he could fly away on the Hippogriff.

Buckbeak on the Run

Following these events, both Sirius and Buckbeak were on the run, visiting a variety of distant places.

In March 1995, when Sirius decided that he needed to be close to Hogwarts because of the Triwizard Tournament, Buckbeak accompanied him to a cave hideout near Hogsmeade.

Later that year, when the Order of the Phoenix made Sirius’ family home at 12 Grimmauld Place their new headquarters, the pair relocated there.

In June 1996, Kreacher deliberately hurt Buckbeak at the urging of Bellatrix Lestrange so that Sirius would be occupied and Kreacher could convince Harry that Sirius was in the Department of Mysteries.

Harry and some of his friends subsequently went to the Department of Mysteries, where they were ambushed by Death Eaters.

Fortunately, they got word of their plan to the Order of the Phoenix, who arrived to help. Sadly, Sirius Black died in the conflict.

Buckbeak Becomes Witherwings

Following the death of Sirius Black, it was no longer safe for Buckbeak to stay at Grimmauld Place.

While Sirius left the home to Harry in his will, the Black family may have cursed the house to make this impossible. Instead, Buckbeak was sent back to live with Hagrid.

Since Buckbeak was still wanted by the Ministry, they changed his name to Witherwings to protect his identity. He stayed there happily with Hagrid and joined him in trying times, such as at the funeral of Aragog.

Following the Battle of the Astronomy Tower and the death of Albus Dumbledore, Harry chased Severus Snape across the grounds to avenge Dumbledore’s death.

Buckbeak attacked Snape to protect Harry. In the end, Snape got away, but Harry was not injured.

Buckbeak also participated in the Battle of Hogwarts to defend the school.

Harry saw great winged creatures soaring the heads of Voldemort’s giants, thestrals and Buckbeak the hippogriff scratching at their eyes while Grawp punched and pummelling them and now the wizards, defenders of Hogwarts and Death Eaters alike were being forced back into the castle.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Following the war, Buckbeak stayed at Hogwarts with Hagrid.
