Cedric Diggory was a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from 1989 as a member of Hufflepuff House. He was later a Prefect and became Captain of the Hufflepuff Quidditch Team in the position of Seeker. He was selected by the Goblet of Fire as Hogwarts’ Champion for the Triwizard Tournament.
Tragically, in the plan made to transport Harry Potter to Lord Voldemort using the Triwizard Cup, Cedric Diggory was also transported to the graveyard in Little Hangleton where he was killed by Lord Voldemort. He death marked the official beginning of the Second Wizarding War.

Cedric Diggory at Hogwarts
Cedric grew up near Ottery St Catchpole, very close to the Weasleys, and started attending Hogwarts in 1989. He was in the same year as Fred and George Weasley but as a member of Hufflepuff House. Unlike the Weasley twins, Cedric went on to become a prefect for his house.
Although it is not explored in the main books, in the game Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, we learn that Cedric Diggory was part of the Circle of Khanna. This was a group of friends who got together to learn magic to avenge the death of Rowan Khanna. The group spent particular time practicing dueling.
Cedric the Quidditch Player
Cedric played Seeker on the Hufflepuff Quidditch team and during his fifth year was made Captain.
The first game of the year was rescheduled to be between Gryffindor and Hufflepuff rather than Gryffindor and Slytherin because Slytherin Seeker Draco Malfoy claimed that his arm had still not recovered from an incident with a Hippogriff. In a major upset, Cedric caught the snitch and won the game for Hufflepuff, at least in part because Harry Potter, the Gryffindor Seeker, was distracted by the presence of Dementors.
When Cedric realized what had happened to Harry, he immediately offered to replay the match. But Oliver Wood, the Gryffindor Quidditch Captain, declined saying that the match was fairly won.
The following year Cedric ran into Harry at the Quidditch World Cup. Cedric’s father, Amos Diggory, bragged about how his son had beaten Harry. Cedric made a point of saying that Harry had fallen from his broom because of the Dementors. However, his father still firmly believed that “the best man won” on the day.
Cedric Diggory – Hogwarts Triwizard Champion
Starting in October 1994, Hogwarts hosted the Triwizard Tournament for the first time in 100 years. One champion was to be chosen for each of the participating schools. Cedric was chosen for Hogwarts, Fleur Delacour for Beauxbatons, and Viktor Krum for Durmstrang. However, in a plan hatched by Lord Voldemort through an agent planted at the school, Harry Potter was chosen as a second champion for Hogwarts.
Cedric was clearly very proud to be chosen as the Hogwarts champion, but he did not show any anger towards Harry when he was chosen as a second Champion. Though Harry did not think that Cedric believed him when he told him that he had not cheated to put his name in the Goblet of Fire.
Even after reporter Rita Skeeter wrote a piece on the Champions and omitted Cedric’s name in favor of Harry’s, Cedric did not complain. He also did not appreciate the popular badges worn by students that said “SUPPORT CEDRIC DIGGORY, the Real Hogwarts Champion” and also “POTTER STINKS”.
While the first task was meant to be a complete surprise, Harry learned that the champions would be facing dragons, and that the Beauxbatons and Durmstrang champions also had this information. Harry chose to share this information with Cedric so that they would all be on an equal footing.
Cedric was the first to face the dragon that he was matched with, charged with retrieving a golden egg that it was guarding. He was pitted against a Swedish Short-Snout. He transfigured a rock into a Labrador to distract the dragon, but at the final moment, it realized what had happened. The dragon burned half of Cedric’s face and he barely got away, but he did pass the task.
After the first task, a special Yule Ball was held as part of the Tournament. Cedric Diggory asked Cho Chang to attend with him. A member of Ravenclaw House, she was a year younger than Cedric and the Seeker on the Ravenclaw Quidditch Team. Harry also asked Cho to attend with him, but she had already said yes to Cedric.
After the ball, Cedric and Cho started dating.
For the second task, the Champions had to decipher a clue hidden in the egg that they retrieved from the dragon. When the egg was opened, it let out a loud and unintelligible screaming noise. Barty Crouch Jnr, disguised as Professor Alastor Moody, tipped off Cedric that he should put the egg underwater to decipher the clue. He did this in the prefect’s bathroom on the fifth floor and learned that they would be descending to the domain of the merpeople in the Great Lake.
Cedric tipped Harry off that he should put the egg underwater, and even gave him permission to use the privacy of the prefect’s bathroom. Cedric felt that he was repaying Harry for telling him about the dragon on the first task.
The merpeople took a person important to each of the Champions and imprisoned them underwater for the Champions to retrieve. For Cedric, they took Cho Chang.
Cedric used the Bubble-Head Charm to successfully make his way through the water and face the obstacles on his path to where the merpeople were holding Cho. He was the second to arrive, after Harry, who was waiting as he was concerned about all the hostages. Cedric took Cho and warned Harry to hurry as time was nearly up. He was the first to return, arriving one minute outside the one-hour time limit.
Cedric received 47 points and was tied in first place with Harry on overall points for the two tasks.
For the third task, the Champions had to navigate a maze full of perilous obstacles to reach the Triwizard Cup at the center. As they were tied with the most points, Harry and Cedric entered the maze together.
Cedric had to get past Hagrid’s Blast-Ended Skrewts. He then encountered Champion Viktor Krum, who had been put under the Imperius Curse by Barty Crouch Jnr. Krum used the Cruciatus Curse on Cedric. Fortunately, Harry arrived as stunned Krum. The two shot red sparks into the air to mark Krum’s position for someone to come and help him, and they separated and continued to seek the cup.
Later Cedric spotted the cup and started sprinting towards it, but he did not see an Acromantula, a giant spider, on his left that burst onto the path in front of him to attack. His wand was knocked out of his hand. Again, Harry arrived at the right moment and could distract the spider for Cedric to retrieve his wand. The two boys together had the power to bring the spider down with a stunning spell. This left both of them in front of the Triwizard Cup.
Harry said Cedric should take it, since he had hurt his foot and would not be able to beat him to the cup. With difficulty, Cedric said that he would leave it for Harry, since Harry had saved him twice within the maze. After a brief argument, the two decided to take the cup together and become joint winners. They grabbed the cup together, which turned out to be a Portkey.
Cedric Diggory’s Death in Little Hangleton
The Portkey, which was supposed to take the winners to the waiting crowd, had been altered by Death Eater Barty Crouch Jnr. It transported the two boys to a cemetery in Little Hangleton, the hometown of Lord Voldemort’s family. Voldemort wanted Harry there so that he could take some of his blood for a spell to restore his body. He then planned to kill Harry Potter.
When Voldemort, in his still weakened form, saw that both boys had arrived, he ordered his servant Peter Pettigrew to “kill the spare”. Pettigrew used Voldemort’s own wand to perform the Avada Kedavra curse on Cedric. A green light blazed from the wand, and Cedric fell to the ground, dead.
Peter Pettigrew was then able to successfully complete the spell to restore Lord Voldemort’s body. Voldemort then summoned his Death Eaters to witness him killing Harry Potter. However, as a result of the connection between Harry and Voldemort, when their wands met, Harry’s wand forced Voldemort’s to perform an effect known as Priori Incantatem. This forced it to show the spells most recently cast.
As a result, shades of many of Lord Voldemort’s victims emerged from his wand, including Cedric, and Harry’s parents. Harry’s parents guided him in terms of what to do to escape, and Cedric asked Harry to take his body home to his parents. While Voldemort was distracted by these shades, Harry grabbed Cedric’s body and used a summoning charm to pull the Portkey to him and transport them back to Hogwarts.
The Aftermath of Cedric Diggory’s Death
When Harry returned to Hogwarts, he recounted what had happened to him. While Dumbledore believed him, the Ministry of Magic chose not to believe Harry because Cornelius Fudge did not want to believe that Lord Voldemort had returned. Instead, he claimed that Barty Crouch Jnr was a madman acting alone, and that Cedric’s death was the result of a terrible accident.
Dumbledore felt that this lie dishonored Cedric’s memory, and at a eulogy service held for Cedric at Hogwarts, he said the following.
“Remember Cedric, remember, if the time should come, when you have to make a choice between what is right and what is easy, remember what happened to a boy who was good, and kind, and brave, because he strayed across the path of Lord Voldemort. Remember Cedric Diggory.”
Albus Dumbledore at Cedric’s memorial ceremony, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Cedric’s father Amos Diggory was horribly affected by the death of the son was always very proud of him as well as a deep love. His mother tried to console herself by saying that his death was swift, and his last memory, winning the Tournament, was a happy one.
While a year of denials from the Ministry of Magic and the Daily Prophet followed Cedric’s death, he was a popular student, and his tragic loss encouraged many students to believe Harry’s story. His photo was one of the items hung on the wall in the Room of Requirement when it was used for DA meetings to remind everyone why they were training themselves to fight Lord Voldemort.
Cedric Diggory’s Alternative Timeline
In Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Amos Diggory begs Harry Potter to use a Time-Turner that is in his possession to go back in time and save Cedric. But Harry refuses, knowing how dangerous it is to alter time. But his son Albus Potter and his friend Scorpius Malfoy get their hands on the Time-Turner and try to complete the task.
The two boys create various alternative timelines, including one in which Cedric Diggory lives. But in their effort to save Cedric, Albus and Scorpius caused Cedric so much humiliation that he developed a hatred for society and became a Death Eater. As a result, he killed Neville Longbottom. This prevented Neville from killing the snake Horcrux Nagini, which in turn led to Harry’s death.
When they tried to change time again, Cedric Diggory saved the two boys from the dark witch Delphini. He thought that saving them was part of the task.
Later, when time has been restored, Harry reveals to his son Albus that he visits the grave of Cedric every year to honor a great wizard who did not deserve his fate.
Cedric Diggory Physical Appearance
Cedric Diggory was played by actor Robert Pattinson in the fifth Harry Potter movie, though J.K. Rowling described his physical appearance differently. Angelina Johnson calls him “that tall, good-looking one”. He had chiseled features, dark hair, and bright green eyes. Fleur Delacour tried to use her Veela allure to get Cedric to ask her to the Yule Ball, but he chose to go with Cho Chang. Nevertheless, this reveals that he was a very attractive young man.
Cedric Diggory Personality Type & Traits
Cedric seems to have been a natural all-rounder. He was good-looking, intelligent, athletic, and popular. But he didn’t let this go to his head. He remained humble throughout the Triwizard Tournament despite the honor of being chosen as the Hogwarts champion and the attention that he received. Cedric also believed strongly in fair play. He helped Harry with the second task and wanted to let Harry take the cup since Harry had helped him on two occasions in the maze.
Cedric Diggory Zodiac Sign & Birthday
Since Cedric was in the same year at Hogwarts as Fred and George Weasley but was also had to be 17 by 31 October 1994 to participate in the Triwizard Tournament, he must have been born between 1 September and 31 October 1977. This means that his zodiac sign is either Virgo or Libra.
Cedric is most likely a Virgo since they tend to be down-to-earth and highly ethical in their dealings with others. Virgos also tend to be naturally intelligent and extremely diligent and hard-working. For this reason, they tend to be good at whatever they apply themselves to, like Cedric.
Was Cedric Diggory Pure Blood?
We are never explicitly told Cedric’s blood status. However, Hagrid does tell Harry that if he won the Tournament he would show everyone that you don’t have to be pure blood to win. This implies that the other champions, including Cedric, were pure blood. Cedric also joins the Death Eaters in an alternative timeline, and Death Eaters favor pure blood lineages. Nevertheless, he could be half-blood.
Cedric Diggory Family Tree
Cedric has quite a distinguished family. His ancestor Eldritch Diggory serving as Minister of Magic from 1733-1747, when he died. His father Amos Diggory also worked for the Ministry of Magic in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures.
Why was Cedric Diggory in Hufflepuff?
While Cedric Diggory was certainly brave, a quality prized by Gryffindor, it was only one of his many traits. Hufflepuff said that she would take anyone into her house who was willing to work hard to learn. That didn’t mean that she would take students that the other houses didn’t want, but rather students willing to work hard. Hufflepuff also prizes a sense of justice. Cedric displays this multiple times during the Triwizard Tournament.
Did Cedric Win the Triwizard Tournament?
Cedric and Harry were the joint winners of the Triwizard Tournament. But in the aftermath of what happened Harry was recorded as the official winner and given the prize money. The award ceremony was canceled. Harry did not want the prize money and gave it to Fred and George Weasley to start Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes.
Who was Cedric Diggory in Love with?
Cedric Diggory invited Cho Chang to the Yule Ball as his preferred date. While the two don’t seem to have been dating before the ball, they soon became a couple. They were close enough that Cho was chosen as the person that Cedric would “sorely miss” in the second Triwizard task. Cho openly mourned Cedric for a significant period after his death. While she was interested in getting close to Harry, her sorrow and confusion of her feelings for Cedric made this challenging.
Why did Lord Voldemort kill Cedric Diggory?
Lord Voldemort ordered Peter Pettigrew to kill Cedric with his wand because he didn’t need him. Voldemort was focused on the task of restoring his body. He didn’t need the irritation of the young wizard’s presence. The senselessness of his death adds to its tragedy.
Does Cedric Diggory come back to Life?
While Cedric does not come back to life, we do see him several times after his death. First, he emerges from Lord Voldemort’s wand when it is forced to reveal its most recent spells. This is when the shade of Cedric asks Harry to take his body back to his parents. Secondly, we see Cedric come back to life in an alternative timeline in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Sadly, in this timeline, Cedric becomes a Death Eater.
Was Cedric Diggory a Death Eater?
The Cedric Diggory that competed in the Triwizard Tournament and died at the end of the ordeal was never a Death Eater. However, in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Albus Potter and Scorpius Malfoy use a Time-Turner to change history. They save Cedric’s life, but he becomes a Death Eater. He is then responsible for several actions that see Lord Voldemort win the Battle of Hogwarts and kill Harry Potter.
Albus and Scorpius use an engorgement charm on Cedric during the second task to put him out of the running for the final task and save his life. But he blows up like a balloon in front of the entire school and the watching public. This causes him such deep humiliation that he turns his back on society and eventually becomes a Death Eater.
He kills Neville Longbottom, which prevents him from killing the Horcrux snake Nagini. This means that when Harry and Voldemort finally show down, he is still unkillable, and instead kills Harry. Lord Voldemort then takes over the wizarding world.
