Cho Chang was a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She was the year above Harry Potter, who she dated briefly, and was in Ravenclaw House. She played Seeker on the Ravenclaw Quidditch team for at least four years.

Cho also dated Cedric Diggory. She was devastated by his murder at the hands of Lord Voldemort at the end of the Triwizard Tournament. This probably motivated her to join the D.A., which also allowed her to get close to Harry Potter.

Cho at Hogwarts – Fourth Year

Cho Chang and Harry Potter first encounter in his third year and her fourth year when they played Quidditch against one another. This suggests that this was Cho’s first year on the Ravenclaw Quidditch team as she had not previously met Harry. She was the only girl on the team.

A very good flyer, her strategy was to tail Harry rather than look for the snitch herself. He recognized this and was able to exploit it, giving her false signals. Harry did eventually catch the snitch, helped by the fact that Cho gasped in distraction at the appearance of four dementors.

Harry was able to cast a Patronus to dispel the dementors. However, they turned out to be Malfoy, Crabb, Goyle, and Marcus Flint, the Captain of the Slytherin Quidditch team, in disguise. Gryffindor went on to win the Quidditch cup that year.

Cho At Hogwarts – Fifth Year

Like many others, Cho attended the Quidditch World Cup in 1994. She briefly saw Harry there and was friendly towards him. Harry already had a crush on Cho at the time.

Cho’s friendly behavior towards Harry continued back at school. She was one of the few people who refused to wear a “Support Cedric Diggory/Harry Potter Stinks” badge after Harry’s name emerged from the Goblet of Fire and made him a second Hogwarts Champion.

Nevertheless, Cho accepted Cedric’s invitation to be his date to the Yule Ball. When Harry asked her later, she apologized saying that she could not attend with him as she was already going with Cedric. After the Yule Ball the two started dating.

She was devastated when Cedric was killed at the end of the Triwizard Tournament and cried openly at his memorial service.

Cho at Hogwarts – Sixth Year

During her sixth year, Cho continued to be friendly towards Harry. Though Harry had a habit of being in embarrassing situations when Cho turned up. On the train on the way to Hogwarts he was covered in stink sap from Neville Longbottom’s Mimbulus Mimbletonia. Later, Ron ends up arguing with her about which Quidditch team they support.

Nevertheless, Cho seems to have been attracted to Harry and often sought him out. Eventually the two managed to have a normal conversation when they ran into each other at the Owlery one morning. Harry was sending a letter to Sirius, and Cho was sending a birthday present to her mother.

Filch bursts in on the two and accused Harry of ordering contraband goods and demanded to see his letter. When Harry told Filch that he had already sent it, but Filch didn’t believe him. But Cho backed him up.

Later Cho was one of the students interested in joining defense against the dark arts classes with Harry. She met the group in Hogsmeade to organize and brought her friend Marietta Edgecombe. Marietta was clearly reluctant, and Cho later explained to Harry that this is because her parents work at the Ministry and told her to stay on Umbridge’s good side. Cho told Harry that her parents said the same thing, but that she was determined to learn after what happened to Cedric.

Cho Chang participating in the DA

While Cho was clearly a competent witch, she sometimes struggled with nerves in DA classes when Harry was watching her. She had clearly developed feelings for him by the time. Nevertheless, she learned to cast a corporeal Patronus in the form of a Swan.

At the end of one DA class when only Cho and Harry were left, Cho approached Harry under the mistletoe and kissed him, but she ended up crying. Hermione later explained to Harry that Cho was probably feeling confused and guilty about her feelings for Harry because of her feelings for Cedric.

Later, on Valentine’s Day, Harry and Cho decided to go on a date in Hogsmeade. It did not go well because Cho wanted to talk about Cedric and Harry did not. Also, Harry told Cho that he needed to meet Hermione, and she started to get jealous. She then (successfully) tried to make Harry jealous by telling him that Roger Davis, kissing his girlfriend nearby, had previously asked her out.

Their relationship was strained after this time but went downhill after her friend Marietta Edgecombe betrayed the DA to Dolores Umbridge. Cho tried to explain Marietta’s actions to Harry and called the jinx that Hermione put in the sign-up paper a horrible trick. Harry disagreed with her, and their relationship fizzled.

Cho at Hogwarts – Seventh Year

In her last year at school Cho generally avoided Harry. She was one of the few people who didn’t stare at him on the Hogwarts Express. She was no doubt busy with her N.E.W.T. exams. Cho continued to play on the Ravenclaw Quidditch team, but did not fly as well as she had in the past.

She eventually started dating fellow Ravenclaw Michael Corner, who had previously dated Ginny Weasley. This was shortly before Ginny and Harry started dating.

Cho After Hogwarts

Cho was one of the members of the DA who returned to Hogwarts for the final battle when a message was sent using the DA coins.

She offered to take Harry to the Ravenclaw common room to see the statue of Rowena Ravenclaw so that he could see what her diadem looked like. Apparently, she looked “rather hopeful” when she offered, causing Ginny to but in and say that Luna should show him. Cho did not object.

We know that Cho survived the final battle as she went on to marry a muggle in later life.

Cho Chang Personality Type & Traits

Cho Chang comes across as both intelligent and popular. She likes the company of others and is almost always in the company of a group of friends. She also never went very long without a boyfriend. Nevertheless, Cho always followed her own conscience and did what was right, regardless of what everyone else was doing.

She supported Harry in the Triwizard Tournament when it was unpopular. Cho believed Harry about Lord Voldemort when the Ministry and Daily Prophet were criticizing him. She also chose to become a member of the DA to help fight against Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters.

Cho is portrayed as quite emotional, often crying during her sixth year at Hogwarts. However, she was recovering from the shock of the sudden murder of her boyfriend Cedric Diggory at the hands of Lord Voldemort. So, this kind of behavior is perhaps not unexpected.

Cho Chang Zodiac Sign & Birthday

While Cho must have been born in 1978/9 to be the year above Harry at school, we are never told her birthday. Fans suggest that she may be a Libra. People born under this sign tend to be both highly intelligent and highly social. They feed off the companionship of other people, and tend to have large groups of friends and always be in a relationship, just like Cho.

Cho Chang Patronus

Cho learns to cast a Patronus as a member of the DA. She masters a corporeal Patronus that takes the form of a swan. This suggests that she is a very talented witch, as not all wizards are able to master this spell. While Cho, like many other DA members, was able to produce a Patronus while still at school.

Is Cho Chang Pure Blood?

We are never told Cho’s blood status. But she must come from a wizarding family as she tells Ron that she started supporting the Quidditch team the Tutshill Tornados at the age of six. She must be pure or half blood.

Did Cho Chang Betray Dumbledore’s Army?

Cho did not betray the DA, but she was the one who forced her friend Marietta to join the DA with her. Dolores Umbridge was able to pressure Marietta into revealing some information about the DA because her parents work at the ministry.

But Marietta stopped talking when the jinx that Hermione placed on the membership parchment caused the word SNEAK to appear on her face in giant pimples. When Marietta returned to school the next year, the word was still visible on her face.

Cho did try and defend Marietta to Harry. She explained that while she understood what Marietta did was wrong, he had to try and see it from Marietta’s perspective. Harry was not open to this and this was one of the main reasons that Cho and Harry’s relationship broke down.

What Position Did Cho Chang Play in Quidditch?

Cho made the Ravenclaw Quidditch team in her fourth year in the position of Seeker. Cho impressed Harry with her skills. She seems to have been a very good flyer, but with a less keen eye for the snitch than Harry. Her playing started to deteriorate after the death of Cedric Diggory, no doubt due to the emotional stress. Nevertheless, she continued to play on the Ravenclaw Quidditch team until she left Hogwarts.

What Was the Relationship Between Cho Chang & Cedric Diggory?

Cedric invited Cho to attend the Yule Ball with him when he was one of the Triwizard Champions. Cho accepted. After this, their relationship seems to have blossomed and they started dating. So much so, that the merpeople chose to kidnap Cho and hold her at the bottom of the lake as the thing that Cedric would miss most. Cho was clearly devastated by the death of Cedric. She often had emotional outbursts about him in the year following his death.

Who Else Did Cho Chang Date?

As well as Harry and Cedric, Cho also dated fellow Ravenclaw Michael Corner in her seventh year. She may also have briefly dated Roger Davis, the captain of the Ravenclaw Quidditch team. He asked her out after the death of Cedric, but before she started dating Harry. In later life J.K. Rowling tells us that Cho went on to marry a Muggle.

Why Did Harry Potter Break Up with Cho Chang?

Harry and Cho’s relationship never really got off the ground. This was due to Harry’s inexperience with girls, and Cho’s confused feelings following the death of Cedric. Cho always wanted to discuss Cedric with Harry, which made him uncomfortable and would often burst into tears when the subject came up.

Harry did not have the skills to deal with this situation, and also did not know how to make a move on Cho. He also inadvertently made Cho jealous by choosing to meet up with Hermione when he was supposed to be spending the day with Cho.

The final breaking point came when Cho’s friend Marietta betrayed the DA. While Harry did not initially hold this against Cho, he did not take it well when she tried to explain and justify Marietta’s behavior. After this, the two just lost interest in one another and generally avoided one another.

However, there does not seem to have been any hard feelings in the long term. Cho even “hopefully” offered to show Harry to the Ravenclaw common room. But Harry’s new girlfriend Ginny Weasley was not happy with this suggestion.

What Happened to Cho Chang?

We don’t know what happened to Cho Chang after she left school. Presumably, she continued to oppose Lord Voldemort, as she returned to Hogwarts to fight against him in the final battle, which she survived. After that, she seems to have gotten on with her life, eventually marrying a muggle. What she was doing that she was able to meet and fall in love with a muggle is unknown.
