Crabbe is a Dark Wizard who joined Lord Voldemort and the Death Eaters during the First Wizarding War. While he evaded conviction and time in Azkaban after the downfall of Lord Voldemort, he was one of the first Death Eaters to return to his master’s side when he summoned the Death Eaters to the cemetery at Little Hangleton.

About Crabbe Sr

Blood StatusPure Blood
OccupationDeath Eater
HouseSlytherin (presumed)
Zodiac SignSagittarius (speculative)

While Lord Voldemort scolded Crabbe for not searching for him following his downfall, he forgave Crabbe and he re-entered the fold.

Crabbe was among the group of Death Eaters that pursued Harry Potter to the Department of Mysteries in the Ministry of Magic to retrieve the prophecy about Harry and Lord Voldemort. Not only did the Death Eaters fail to retrieve the prophecy, but the return of Lord Voldemort was exposed and had to be acknowledged by the Ministry of Magic. For his role in these events, Crabbe was sent to Azkaban alongside Lucius Malfoy.

Crabbe and the other Death Eaters escaped from Azkaban the following year when the dementors that guard the wizard prison sided with Lord Voldemort. This means that he was probably present in the Death Eater army at the Battle of Hogwarts.

His participation in the battle and his fate are not specifically recorded. If he was not killed, he was probably sent back to Azkaban by the newly formed Ministry of Magic under Kingsley Shacklebolt.

Crabbe is also the father of Vincent Crabbe, who was at Hogwarts in the same year as Harry Potter. His son was in Slytherin house, suggesting that his father was a Slytherin as well. He was close with Draco Malfoy and Gregory Goyle. Together the three bullied Harry throughout his time at Hogwarts.

Crabbe Sr Personality Type & Traits

Crabbe comes off as an opportunistic person who will hitch his wagon to any person who seems like they can help him get what he wants. He happily signed up to be a Death Eater, but then turned his back on Lord Voldemort when he fell following his attempt to kill Harry Potter. After that, he was happy to deny his Death Eater past and stay close to Lucius Malfoy as a more powerful wizard.

Crabbe returned to his master quickly following the recuperation of his body. But this may have been more out of fear of the consequences of not returning than loyalty.

He seems like he was not an intelligent or an independent thinker, and he enjoyed hurting others. He was happy to try and use the Killing Curse on Hermione Granger in the Department of Mysteries despite the fact that she was only a teenager.

Crabbe Sr Zodiac Sign & Birthday

We are never told Crabbe’s birthday, but he may well have been born in 1954, the same year as Lucius Malfoy. We know that Malfoy was a few years ahead of Snape at school, as Lily complains to Snape of his admiration for the older student. Crabbe may have been Lucius Malfoy’s contemporary and born around the same time.

We also do not know Crabbe’s zodiac sign, but he may be a Sagittarius. People born under this sign tend to like adventure and danger, so they could be drawn to the dark arts. They are also often attracted to charismatic leaders and ideas of revolution.

Was Crabbe Sr in Slytherin House?

We are never told Crabbe’s house, but it is very likely that he was in Slytherin, like his son Vincent Crabbe. Houses tend to run in families, and many people have commented that all Death Eaters came from Slytherin House. Plus, Malfoy and Crabbe seem to have been friends prior to starting school, and neither seemed concerned about not being put in Slytherin (unlike Harry and Ron who worry over which house they will be put in).

Is Crabbe Sr Pure Blood?

While the Crabbe’s claim to be a pureblood family, they are not listed among the sacred twenty-eight families still considered pure blood in the 1930s. This may mean that they have some muggle ancestry, but they would have done their best to hide this.

At least one member of the Crabbe family, Irma, married into the Black family. We know that the Blacks were very particular about pureblood marriages. Pollux Black was not disowned for aligning with a Crabbe. They must have been considered pureblood.

What Happened to Crabbe Sr?

The last we hear of Crabbe senior is when he is sent to Azkaban following the events in the Department of Mysteries. But presumably, he was among the Death Eaters who escaped from Azkaban less than a year later. He was probably with Lord Voldemort at the Battle of Hogwarts. If he did not die during that battle, as a known Death Eater he would have been sent back to Azkaban.

Who Were the Main Death Eaters?

Crabbe is one of several Death Eaters that we meet over the course of the Harry Potter books. The Death Eaters that return to Lord Voldemort following the Triwizard Tournament included Crabbe, Goyle Sr, Lucius Malfoy, Nott, Avery, and McNair. Peter Pettigrew and Barty Crouch Jr were already working for Lord Voldemort at this time.

Following his return, Lord Voldemort helped some of his Death Eaters escape from Azkaban. Among them were Bellatrix Lestrange, Rodolphus Lestrange, Rabastan Lestrange, Antonin Dolohov, and Augustus Rookwood. He then set a team of 12 Death Eaters to the Department of Mysteries which included Mulciber, Jugson, and Travers.

Lord Voldemort also believed that Severus Snape was a Death Eater. He placed the Death Eaters Alecto and Amycus Carrow with him at Hogwarts School in 1997/8. Meanwhile Yaxley was working for Voldemort within the Ministry of Magic.

Igor Karkaroff fled rather than return when Lord Voldemort reactivated the dark mark. Other known Death Eaters include Gibbon, Rosier, Rowle, Selwyn, and Wilkes. We also know that Sirius’ brother Regulus Arcturus Black was a Death Eater for a period of time. But he turned against Lord Voldemort and stole one of his Horcruxes with the intention of destroying it.
