Crookshanks is a half-cat half-Kneazle that Hermione Granger purchased. He was incredibly intelligent and independent.

The cat was one of the first to realize that Ron’s rat Scabbers was an Animagus and not to be trusted. Crookshanks formed a friendship with Sirius Black while he was stalking Hogwarts in dog form and helped him catch Pettigrew.

Coorkshanks Biography

Hermione Granger purchased Crookshanks from the Magical Menagerie on 31 August 1993. She was originally looking for an owl but quickly formed a bond with the cat.

She also felt the need to adopt Crookshanks as he had been there for quite a while because no one wanted him. Hermione took Crookshanks to Hogwarts with her.

Crookshanks took an immediate dislike to Ron’s rat Scabbers. This is probably because Crookshanks could tell that Scabbers was not a rat but, in fact, an Animagus in disguise.

Crookshanks attacked Scabbers on a number of occasions, probably trying to protect her people from it.

Crookshanks & Sirius Black

Scabbers also befriended Sirius Black, another Animagus, who was stalking Hogwarts in search of Peter Pettigrew.

Some of Crookshanks’ attacks may have been efforts to help Black. At one point, Ron was convinced that Crookshanks had eaten Scabbers. The Animagus had gone into hiding. This caused a major row between Hermione and Ron.

Crookshanks also stole the list of Gryffindor passwords that Neville Longbottom had written down. He gave them to Sirius to help him infiltrate Gryffindor Tower.

When Sirius Black eventually captured Scabbers, with Ron in tow, Scabbers helped Harry Potter and Hermione into the Shrieking Shack.

Crookshanks touched the secret knob on the Whomping Willow to let them pass. When Harry wanted to kill Sirius, thinking that he was the villain, Crookshanks lay on Sirius’ heart to protect him.

This delayed Harry long enough for Remus Lupin to arrive. The truth about Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew was exposed.

Crookshanks After the Revelations

Following these events, Ron appreciated Crookshanks and even asked his opinion on a small owl that Sirius had offered him, ensuring that he could be trusted.

After these events, Crookshanks developed friendships with a variety of the Gryffindors. He was known to sit in Harry’s lap and to follow around and play with Ginny Weasley.

Hermione was forced to leave Crookshanks behind when she, Harry, and Ron fled Bill and Fleur’s wedding and began their hunt for Horcruxes in earnest. But Crookshanks was reunited with Hermione after the war, passing away some time before 2021.
