Dean Thomas Early Life

Dean Thomas was the son of a wizard father and Muggle mother. But Dean’s father left when he was young and never told his wife that he was a wizard. He was then killed by a group of Death Eaters near the close of the First Wizarding War for refusing to join their ranks.

Therefore, Dean was raised in the Muggle world ignorant that he was a wizard, and with several Muggle half-siblings from his mother’s second marriage. He seems to have had a happy youth as an artistic young boy that loved West Ham United.

He would have received an invitation to Hogwarts on his eleventh birthday and discovered that he was a wizard.

Dean’s Early Years at Hogwarts

When Dean started at Hogwarts he was sorted into Gryffindor. He quickly became best friends with his dorm-mate Seamus Finnigan and was also friendly with the other Gryffindor boys in his year, Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Neville Longbottom.

Dean had a lot to learn about the wizarding world having grown up among Muggles. In preparation to watch his first Quidditch game, he made an artistic banner for Harry, which Hermione enchanted to change colors throughout the match.

When Slytherin plater Marcus Flint fouled Harry, Dean demanded a red card, and Ron Weasley had to explain that they did not exist in Quidditch.

In his second year, Dean enthusiastically joined the dueling club alongside the other students and joined in speculations about the Chamber of Secrets.

When Professor Binns was telling his second years about the Chamber, Dean correctly speculated that only someone related to Slytherin would be able to access the chamber, and that is why Dumbledore and the other headmasters had not found it over the years.

Dean started taking Divination and Care of Magical Creatures in his third year and was one of the students who appreciated Hagrid’s teaching style. Nevertheless, he did not volunteer to be the first to approach the Hippogriff Buckbeak.

Dean Thomas Exploring the Wizarding World

In his fourth year, Dean got to know the wizarding world better as he attended the Quidditch World Cup with his friend Seamus Finnigan. Following this, he finally removed the football poster in his dorm and replaced it with a Quidditch poster.

He was probably as excited as the other students when it was announced that the Triwizard Tournament would be held at Hogwarts. Dean was probably equally disappointed when he learned that his age would preclude him from participating.

When Harry Potter was unexpectedly made a second Hogwarts champion alongside Cedric Diggory, Dean supported Harry.

Dean was as uncomfortable as the other boys when participating in dance classes with Professor McGonagall to attend the Yule Ball. It is unclear who he went with, but he did ask Ron how he and Harry had convinced the two best-looking girls in their year, Parvati and Padma Patil, to attend with them.

Dean Thomas and Dumbledore’s Army

Not living in the wizarding world, Dean was not bombarded with Daily Prophet propaganda claiming that Dumbledore and Harry were lying about the return of Lord Voldemort. Consequently, he was inclined to believe his friend, unlike Seamus whose mother was an avid reader of the Daily Prophet.

Dean and Seamus argued briefly over their difference of opinion in regards to Harry’s story.

Dean was just as disgusted with the arrival of Dolores Umbridge as other students. He even argued with her when she criticized their previous teaching in Defence Against the Dark Arts.

Dean jumped to the defense of Professor Lupin, claiming he was the best teacher that ever had. He even commented that they learned loads with their previous teacher, Barty Crouch Jnr disguised as Alastor Moody, even though he turned out to be a maniac.

Dean was among the first students to sign up to be a member of Dumbledore’s Army and learn defensive magic from Harry. Eventually, Seamus would change his mind about Harry, and Dean brought him along to the meetings.

Ignorant of the magical world, Dean accidentally insulted the new Divination teacher Firenze.

When the Centaur told the students that he had been expelled by his herd that lives in the Forbidden Forest, an excited Dean asked whether Hagrid had bred them. Firenze put the boy straight, and he had the sense to be embarrassed.

Before the end of the year, and possibly as a result of their extra contact in DA meetings, Dean Thomas and Ginny Weasley started dating.

Dean was pleased to hear that their results did not arrive until July at the end of the year, as he would not have to worry about them for several weeks.

Dean Thomas and Ginny Weasley

When Dean returned in his sixth year, he was pleased to be dating the attractive and charismatic Ginny Weasley. He did not let Ron’s disapproval trouble him.

He was also pleased when he had the opportunity to join the Quidditch team for a short period, replacing Katie Bell as Chaser after he was hospitalized.

Dean and Ginny grew apart, mostly because Ginny still had strong feelings for Harry. As Dean wanted to get closer, Ginny pulled away. The two eventually broke it off.

Dean broke a glass in shock when Harry kissed Ginny in the common room following their Quidditch final win. Nevertheless, he got over this and remained friends with both.

Dean Thomas on the Run

Dean was unable to return to Hogwarts the following year as access was restricted to those who could prove their wizarding heritage.

At the same time, Muggle-born wizards were being rounded up and accused of stealing magic from real wizards. Consequently, Dean went on the run, probably to protect the rest of his family.

While in hiding, Dean met up with Ted Tonks, the Muggle-born father of Nymphadora Tonks, and traveled with him. They were later joined by Dirk Cresswell and the goblins Griphook and Gornuk. The group stuck together, but many were killed or captured, eventually leaving Dean alone with Griphook.

Dean defended his friend Harry to Griphook, who was tired of hearing his name. He also expressed to the goblin his concern when he heard that Ginny Weasley was getting in trouble at Hogwarts.

Snatchers eventually captured Dean and Griphook. The same group of Snatchers then stumbled over Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Suspecting that they had found harry Potter, they took all five captives to Malfoy Manor.

Along with Luna Lovegood and Garrick Ollivander, who was already being held in the Manor, the group was saved by the House-Elf Dobby. Aberforth Dumbledore sent the elf to help them following a desperate plea from Harry.

With the others, Dean arrived at Shell Cottage, the home of Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour. Dean helped Harry and Ron dig a grave for Dobby by hand to honor the elf for sacrificing his life to save them. He placed a woolly hat on Dobby’s head to signify that he was a free elf.

Dean Thomas and the Battle of Hogwarts

In May 1998, when Bill and Fleur received word that there would be a showdown at Hogwarts, Dean traveled to the school with them, eager to fight. He was also pleased to be reunited with his friend Seamus.

Dean was without a wand at the start of the battle, as the Death Eaters had taken it. But he soon managed to win a wand from the Death Eaters, and he made an important contribution to the battle.

He survived the battle, but it is unknown what he went on to do in later life.

Dean Thomas Personality Type & Traits

Dean Thomas comes across as an open-minded and naturally friendly person. He judged people on their actions and not their blood. This is seen in the way he defended Professor Lupin when Dolores Umbridge called him a dangerous half-breed.

He generally seems to have rolled with life’s punches. Dean grasped opportunities when they presented themselves, such as playing on the Gryffindor Quidditch team when Katie Bell was in the hospital. But he also knew how to take life’s blows, such as when ginny dumped him for Harry.

A true Gryffindor, he wanted to fight alongside his friends in the Battle of Hogwarts. He risked his life even when he did not have a wand in hand.
