Elphias Doge Early Life

Born into a pure-blood wizarding family, Elphias Doge would have grown up in the wizarding world. Shortly before he was due to start at Hogwarts in 1892, he contracted dragon pox. Although he recovered in time to attend school, he still had a pockmarked visage and greenish hue which made others avoid him.

When he was sorted into Gryffindor with Dumbledore, the two became friends. Doge suspects that they fell together because they were both outsiders. At the time, Dumbledore was principally known as the son of a muggle murderer.

However, Dumbledore soon found his own fame as an exception wizard, and Doge became known as his dim-witted but devoted sidekick. This perception may be unfair, as Doge himself noted, it was not always easy to live in Dumbledore’s long shadow.

When Doge and Dumbledore graduated from Hogwarts in 1899, they planned to take a Grand Tour of the world together. However, on the eve of their departure, while they were staying at the Leaky Cauldron, they received the news that Dumbledore’s mother Kendra had died. They both went to Godric’s Hollow for the funeral, where Dumbledore stayed, and Doge went off on their trip.

Doge wrote to Dumbledore often about his “narrow escapes from Chimeras in Greece and the experiments of Egyptian alchemists”. He returned shortly after the death of Dumbledore’s sister Ariana to attend the funeral.

Elphias Doge During the First Wizarding War

Elphias Doge joined Dumbledore in the Order of the Phoenix in the First Wizarding War. We see him in a photo found by Moody that he showed to Harry Potter. He is wearing a silly hat in the photo, which was apparently a trademark of his in those days.

After the first fall of Lord Voldemort, Doge must have had a fairly successful career. One of his jobs was serving as a Special Advisor to the Wizengamot, wizarding Britain’s high court and parliament.

Elphias Doge During Second Wizarding War

Doge returned to the Order of the Phoenix when Dumbledore announced the return of Lord Voldemort in 1995. He believed his friend rather than the Ministry of Magic and the Daily Prophet.

He was part of the Advance Guard that escorted Harry from 4 Privett Drive to 12 Grimmauld Place before the start of the school year in 1995. At this time, he comments that Harry looks very much like his father, though, of course, with his mother’s eyes.

Elphias Doge and the Death of Albus Dumbledore

After the death of Albus Dumbledore in 1997, Doge wrote his obituary in the Daily Prophet. He talked about his kind friend who could find something of value in anyone. This was very different from the picture that Rita Skeeta pained in her explosive biography “The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore”.

Skeeta pestered Doge for an interview for her book, which he gave reluctantly. In retaliation for calling Skeeta an “interfering trout”, she questioned his sanity in pre-publication publicity for her book.

Harry approached Doge at Bill and Fleur’s wedding to ask him questions about Dumbledore. He felt safe to reveal his identity to Doge – he was using Polyjuice Potion – because he was a member of the Order of the Phoenix. But Harry did not get to speak to Dodge alone because Ron’s Aunt Muriel butted into the conversation.

While Muriel suggested that there must be some truth in Rita Skeeta’s book, Doge stuck to his belief in Dumbledore’s goodness and pointed out that it is easy to misconstrue things. This did not help Harry much, as he felt betrayed that Dumbledore did not tell him about important things, such as their shared connection to Godric’s Hollow.

Doge disapparated from the wedding at the Burrow when the Patronus messenger of Kingsley Shacklebolt arrived to tell them that the Ministry had fallen and that Death Eaters were on the way.

We do not know what happened to Elphias Doge after that, and his continued participation in the Wizarding War was not tracked. He may have spent considerable time in hiding as a known friend and supporter of Albus Dumbledore.

Elphias Doge Personality Type & Traits

Elphias Doge is portrayed as a loyal friend of Albus Dumbledore, and as having a stout heart. He was an active member of the Order of the Phoenix during both wizarding wars. Some people suggest that he was Dumbledore’s dim-witted friend, but he may have been very intelligent, but struggled to shine alongside his brilliant friend Dumbledore.

Doge must have been a talented and respected wizard to gain the position of Special Advisor to the Wizengamot. But the fact that he was never jealous of Dumbledore and always supported him says much about his character. He was a bit like Ron Weasley to Harry Potter.

Elphias Doge Zodiac Sign & Birthday

Elphias Doge must have been born in 1880/81 to have been in the same year at school as Dumbledore. We do not know his Zodiac sign, but fans suggest he may be a Pisces, the same sign as Ron Weasley. People born under this sign are generous and loyal friends. They believe the best in people and stand up for them. Pisces aren’t intimidated when the people they care about shine.

What happened to Elphias Doge?

We do not hear about Elphias Doge after he disapparated from the Burrow. It is very likely that he was forced to go into hiding as a well-known friend and supporter of Dumbledore. His death is never mentioned, so hopefully, he survived the Second Wizarding War.
