Ernie Macmillan Early Life

Ernie Macmillan was a pure-blood wizard born into the Macmillan family that is considered among the sacred 28 families that can still make that claim. He seems to have been quite proud of that fact since he could trace his family back through nine generations.

In case you’re getting ideas, I might tell you that you can trace my family back through nine generations of witches and warlocks and my blood’s as pure as anyone’s.

Ernie started attending Hogwarts in 1991, the same year as Harry Potter, though he was sorted into Hufflepuff House. He soon became friends with fellow Hufflepuffs, including Hannah Abbott, Susan Bones, and Justin Finch-Fletchley, a muggle-born, suggesting that he was not prejudiced.

Ernie Macmillan and Slytherin’s Heir

Ernie was one of the students who believed that Harry must be Slytherin’s heir after witnessing him speaking parseltongue during duelling club.

Hannah, he’s a Parselmouth. Everyone knows that’s the mark of a Dark Wizard. Have you ever heard of a decent one who could talk to snakes? They called Slytherin himself Serpent-tongue. Remember what was written on the wall? Enemies of the Heir, Beware. Potter had some sort of run-in with Filch. Next thing we know, Filch’s cat’s attacked. That first year, Creevey, was annoying Potter at the Quidditch match, taking pictures of him while he was lying in the mud. Next thing we know — Creevey’s been attacked.

Ernie even suggested that his muggle-born friend Justin Finch-Fletchley stay hidden in the Hufflepuff common room to avoid Harry. Ernie continued to assume Harry was the culprit when Justin was petrified.

However, when Hermione Granger became another victim of Slytherin’s monster, Ernie realized that Harry would not have done that to his close friend. He apologized to Harry for suspecting him.

Ernie Macmillan and Dumbledore’s Army

In his fifth year, Ernie Macmillan was made a Hufflepuff Prefect. He was also very occupied with preparing for his exams and became quite competitive when it came to how much time he spent studying.

I’m doing eight. Eight or nine. I’m getting an hour in before breakfast everyday. Eight’s my average. I can do ten on a good weekend day. I did nine and a half on Monday. Not so good on Tuesday — only seven and a quarter. Then on Wednesday —

When the new High Inquisitor of Hogwarts and Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher Dolores Umbridge basically blocked teaching of her subject, Ernie joined Dumbledore’s Army to learn defensive magic from Harry. He said that for him learning to defend themselves against the dark arts was even more important than preparing for exams.

Personally I think this is really important, possibly more important than anything else we’ll do this year, even with our O.W.L.s coming up. I, personally, am at a loss to see why the Ministry has foisted such a useless teacher on us at this critical period. Obviously, they are in denial about the return of You-Know-Who.

After Albus Dumbledore was forced out of Hogwarts, it was Ernie who learned that Dolores Umbridge had a tantrum when she could not gain access to the headmaster’s office. He passed on this information to Harry, Ron, and Hermione, but was also overheard by Draco Malfoy.

When Malfoy said that he would dock points from their houses for this talk, Ernie pointed out that Prefects can’t dock points. This was when Malfoy informed the group about the new Inquisitorial Squad.

Ernie Macmillan Final Years at Hogwarts

Ernie must have done very well in his O.W.L. exams. He was the only member of Hufflepuff who got the required marks to continue with Potions at N.E.W.T. level.

He was not monitoring his DA coin and so did not get the call to help on the night that the Dark Mark appeared above Hogwarts. However, he did witness Draco Malfoy, Severus Snape, and Harry Potter running down a corridor. He asked what was going on, but received no response.

Ernie also returned to Hogwarts in his seventh year, after the death of Albus Dumbledore, when Death Eaters had taken control of the school. It was now mandatory for all wizards to attend.

Ernie joined the revived Dumbledore’s Army, led by Neville Longbottom, to make trouble for new headmaster Severus Snape and the Death Eater teachers Alecto and Amycus Carrow.

Ernie was still at school when Harry, Ron, and Hermione arrived on their hunt for Horcruxes, which precipitated the Battle of Hogwarts. When Professor McGonagall gathered everyone in the Great Hall before the fight, she ordered Prefects to escort the students from their house to the escape route. It was Ernie who piped up and said that some of them wanted to stay behind and fight.

Many people applauded and McGonagall said that students who were of age could stay behind, though many younger students managed to stay behind as well.

Ernie participated in the battle, at one point using his Patronus to drive off a group of Dementors. Ernie Macmillan’s Patronus takes the form of a boar.

He survived the Battle of Hogwarts, but it is not known what he went on to do with his life.

Ernie Macmillan Personality Type & Traits

While Ernie Macmillan can come across as a little pretentious, he is clearly a good friend who believes in the value of hard work and standing up for what is right.

While he was proud of his pure-blood status, he was not prejudiced against muggle-borns, and his best friend was a muggle-born wizard.

He thought that hard work and study were the best way to get results. He committed to a process of study, which clearly worked well for him as he excelled at O.W.L. level.

While his studies were important to him, he thought that preparing for the coming Wizarding War was even more important. When the moment finally came, there was no question in Ernie’s mind that he would not join the fight.

Ernie Macmillan Zodiac Sign & Birthday

We do not know Ernie Macmillan’s birthday, but he must have been born in 1979/80. His personality suggests that his zodiac sign may be Capricorn. People born under this sign tend to be highly organized, and dedicated. They believe in keeping their heads down and committing to the process.

Capricorns are also very honest. They speak with authority, as we see Ernie do when he describes the DA. But they are also willing to admit when they are wrong. Ernie does this when he realized that Harry cannot be Slytherin’s heir.
