Fleur Delacour in France

Fleur Delacour was born in France in 1976/77 to Apolline Delacour and her husband. Her grandmother was a Veela, so Fleur and her younger sister Gabrielle are one-quarter Veela. One of her grandmother’s hairs was incorporated into Fleur’s wand. Fleur studied magic at Beauxbatons Academy, the premier magical school in France.

Fleur and the Triwizard Championship

When the group from Beauxbatons arrived at Hogwarts for the Triwizard Championship, Fleur immediately drew attention due to her Veela ancestry. Many of the boys of Hogwarts became instantly smitten with the golden-haired beauty. But there is much more to Fleur than just her looks. Her name was chosen from the Goblet of Fire to represent her school in the Tournament.

Fleur was outraged when Harry was added to the Tournament as an additional champion. Not only did it give Hogwarts an extra chance of winning, but she complained that he was a “little boy”, who would be unable to compete in the tournament.

First Task

On the first task, Fleur had to take a golden egg from a Common Welsh Green dragon. She immobilized the dragon with a sleeping trance to get at the egg. However, it let out a jet of flame while snoring and set Fleur’s skirt on fire. But she was able to extinguish it with water from her wand.

Yule Ball

Fleur had wanted to attend the Yule Ball with fellow champion Cedric Diggor. She used her Veela charm on him, but he decided to attend with Cho Chang. Her Veela charm also urged Ron Weasley to ask her. She responded with a look of shock and disdain before Ron’s friend dragged him off. Eventually she attended with Roger Davies, the Ravenclaw Quidditch Team Captain. At some point in the night, they went into the bushes of the gardens for some romance.

Second Task

For the second task, the merpeople took people that were important to each of the champions and kept them in the great lake. The champions had to descend and find them. For Fleur, they took her younger sister Gabrielle. Fleur used a Bubble-Head Charm to enter the lake. But she was unable to make it to her sister because she was attached by Grindylows.

Waiting on the surface, and unaware that the hostages were never in any real danger, Fleur was extremely anxious about her sister. She was overjoyed when Harry saved her along with Ron. Fleur thanked both Harry and Ron profusely for saving Gabrielle. She also declared that she deserved zero points for the task when she received 25 points.

Third Task

Before the third task, the families of the Triwizard Champions gathered, and Fleur encountered Bill Weasley for the first time, who was there for Harry. Harry notices that Fleur was immediately interested in him.

Because of her low points, Fleur was the last to enter the maze in the third task. She did not last long as Barty Crouch Jnr, disguised as Alastor Moody, was determined that Harry should win. He entered the maze and stunned Fleur, removing her from the race. This allowed Harry and Cedric to reach the cup first, which transported them to Lord Voldemort. The Dark Lord was able to restore his body and Cedric Diggory was killed.

Fleur stayed for the memorial service for Cedric. She was visibly upset as she had become close with Cedric during the Tournament. As she left, she told Harry that she would see him again as she planned to work in England to work on her English.

Fleur at Gringotts and Meeting Bill Weasley

Fleur followed through on her plans and got a part-time job working at Gringotts to improve her English. There she met Bill Weasley again, who also worked for Gringotts as a treasure hunter, and the two quickly fell in love and Bill proposed.

In the summer of 1996 Bill took Fleur to stay with his family at the Burrow so that she could get to know her better. While the men of the family were enraptured by Fleur, Mrs Weasley and Ginny did not care for Fleur. Ginny nicknamed her Phlegm. They were frustrated by Fleur’s ego and the way she swept around the house. They also did not appreciate the way she would always explain how they did things “better” in France.

Fleur believed Harry Potter and Dumbledore from the beginning that Lord Voldemort was back following the death of Cedric Diggory. She became active in the Order of the Phoenix alongside Bill.

Greyback’s Attack on Bill Weasley

In June 1997 Draco Malfoy enabled Death Eaters to enter Hogwarts, and members of the Order stationed at Hogsmeade were called to help. Bill Weasley was among them and he was savaged by the werewolf Fenrir Greyback. Since it was not the full moon, he did not become a werewolf, but he was terribly disfigured. Fleur rushed to the hospital wing with Mrs and Mr Weasley.

When Mrs Weasley lamented that her son had been so handsome and was to be married, Fleur flew into a rage. She did not like either the implications that Bill would no longer love her, or that she would not still want to marry Bill. She commented that she was attractive enough for the two of them and demanded that Mrs Weasley let her nurse Bill.

Within minutes Fleur and Mrs Weasley were crying together, and the entire family finally accepted Fleur. Mrs Weasley even offered Fleur her Aunt Muriel’s goblin-made tiara for the wedding.

Fleur and Bill’s Wedding

When it was time to remove Harry Potter from the home of the Dursleys in July 1997, the plan was to use Polyjuice to disguise several members of the Order of the Phoenix as Harry to act as decoys. Fleur volunteered to be one of the decoys. Though she did ask Bill not to look at her because she was “hideous” after she transformed.

Bill and Fleur made their way on a Thestral, and saw Alastor Moody fall to his death. They were chased by half a dozen Death Eaters, but managed to escape and return to the Burrow. Fleur was the first to voice the fact that someone must have betrayed them for the Death Eaters to know which day Harry was being moved.

Shortly after this, on August 1st, Bill and Fleur were married at the Burrow, with Ginny and Fleur’s younger sister Gabrielle as bridesmaids. Everyone commented that Gabrielle looked very much like Fleur. Although the Weasleys were worried about hosting Fleur’s family, they turned out to be genial and get on well. Fleur also invited fellow Triwizard Champion Viktor Krum to attend the wedding.

Fleur wore a simple white dress and the tiara and looked so beautiful that Bill barely looked as though he had been mauled by Fenrir Greyback.

Sadly, the after-party was cut short when they received the news that Rufus Scrimgeour was dead and that the Ministry of Magic had fallen to Lord Voldemort. Death Eaters and Ministry officials arrived at the wedding while many of the guests fled. She and the Weasleys were questioned about the whereabouts of Harry Potter.

Fleur and the Second Wizarding War

After their wedding, Bill and Fleur relocated as a married couple to Shell Cottage and continued to be active members of the Order of the Phoenix.

During their first Christmas, they had Bill’s brother Ron with them. He had abandoned Harry and Hermione on their quest for the Horcruxes for a period of time and could not handle the shame of returning home.

Harry, Ron, and Hermione escaped there again following their escape from Malfoy Manor. They brought with the Dean Thomas, Luna Lovegood, Garrick Ollivander, and the goblin Griphook, as well as the body of the house-elf Dobby. Harry buried him at Shell Cottage.

While Dean and Luna were sent on, Fleur cared for Ollivander and Griphook until the trio was ready to infiltrate Gringotts with the help of the goblin. Fleur did not want Harry to leave. She wanted him to stay with them at Shell Cottage where it was safe.

In the aftermath of the heist, Harry, Ron, and Hermione made their way to Hogwarts to seek the Ravenclaw diadem Horcrux. Neville Longbottom assumed that they were there to fight and called the members of the Order of the Phoenix to Hogwarts. Both Fleur and Bill arrived. When Percy Weasley unexpected arrived leading to a tense moment among the Weasleys, Fleurs distracted Lupin and Harry with talk about Lupin’s son to give them privacy.

Fleur fought in the battle, and shared in the pain of her new family at the death of Fred Weasley.

Fleur’s Later Life

After the war, Bill and Fleur had three children, Victoire, Dominique, and Louis Weasley. She received medals of honour from both the French and British Ministries of Magic for her role in the Second Wizarding War.

Fleur Delacour Personality Type & Traits

Fleur comes across as arrogant because of her good looks, but she was also clearly a talented witch as she was chosen to represent her school in the Triwizard Tournament. But she no doubt grew up with a sense of entitlement as her looks and talent meant that many things came easily to her. She was not always sensitive to the plights of others.

But Fleur also clearly had a big and generous heart. She was genuinely distraught when she was unable to save her sister from the lake. Her gratitude to Harry and Ron was genuine, and her disappointment in herself as well. This is why she declared that she deserved no points in the second task.

As an adult with the Weasley, Fleur still had a conceited streak, and would always inform that family why the French way was better. She was also not always sensitive to the feelings of others with her criticism. This led Mrs Weasley and Ginny to consider her snobbish.

Nevertheless, her love for Bill Weasley was genuine, and she did not abandon him when he lost his good looks. She responded that she was good-looking enough for both of them. Fleur was also eventually able to bond with her new family.

She obviously believed in doing what was right. Fleur decided to join the Order of the Phoenix even though the return of Lord Voldemort was still disputed. She also put her life on the line several times.
