Mobs are a massive part of Minecraft. With more than 75 different mobs currently present in the game, it’s safe to say that these guys are at the top of Mojang’s tier list.
Among these, Axolotl is a type of passive mob found underwater that is hostile towards most aquatic creatures but passive towards players.
Axolotls come in 5 different color variations – Leucistic, Brown, Gold, Cyan, and Blue. (Blue Axolotls being the most difficult to naturally find).
What Are Blue Axolotls in Minecraft 1.19?

A Blue Axolotl is the rarest color variation of the Axolotl mob, which has a 0.083% chance (1 in 1200) of spawning when two Axolotls are bred.
With update 1.19, Axolotls (including the blue mutation) can naturally spawn in Lush Caves.
The probability of breeding a Blue Axolotl is significantly increased if both of its parents are also Blue Axolotls.
A Blue Axolotl is immensely hard to get a hold of if you do it without using any cheats.
The other 4 mutations of Axolotls are much more prevalent in an ordinary Minecraft world, and you’ll seldom see one of these blue guys floating about.
Although they’re much harder to locate and breed, Blue Axolotls have the exact same stats and behavior as normal Axolotls.
The only difference between them and other Axolotls is the color they spawn in.
This table summarizes essential information regarding Blue Axolotls.
Mob Type | Blue Axolotl |
Spawn Chance (Blue Parents) | 99.917% |
Spawn Chance (Other Variant Parents) | 0.083% |
Natural Generation Biome | Lush Caves |
Spawn Code | /summon minecraft:axolotl ~ ~ ~ {Variant:4} |
Other Color Variations of Axolotls
As we’ve previously mentioned – Axolotls are also available in Leucistic, Brown, Gold, and Cyan colors. These spawn naturally and can be bred as well.
You can view more information regarding their spawn conditions here.
Axolotls have a 99.917% chance of spawning as these 4 other colors.
This roughly translates to each variant having a 24.97% chance of generation with each Baby Axolotl.
The spawn condition and breeding of all Axolotls mobs are precisely the same regardless of their mutation.
How to Breed a Blue Axolotl in Minecraft 1.19

There are two scenarios to consider here.
Firstly, in the case that you already have 2 Adult Blue Axolotls, you can quickly breed these using a Bucket of Tropical Fish to get a Baby Blue Axolotl.
This is because Axolotls have a 99.917% of matching one of their parents. Since both of the parents here are Blue Axolotls, the Baby Axolotl will also have the blue mutation.
As such, if you already have 2 Blue Axolotls, breeding more will be a walk in the park!
In contrast, if you don’t have any Adult Blue Axolotls, things are about to get much more intense!
Without any parent Blue Axolotls, you’ll have to rely on breeding parents of other color variations to get Baby Blue Axolotls.
You’ll have a 0.083% chance of the Baby Axolotl being blue when using different colored parents for breeding.
This means that you’ll have a 1 in 1200 chance of receiving a Blue Axolotl through breeding other Axolotl types!
This might seem a bit overkill on Mojang’s part – but there really aren’t any other ways to get your hands on one of these guys.
Breeding Adult Axolotls
Here’s how you can breed 2 Adult Axolotls:
- Bring both of the Adult Axolotls in close proximity to one another.
- Feed one Bucket of Tropical Fish item each to both the parent Axolotls.
- After eating these, the Axolotls will start breeding. A few seconds later, a Baby Axolotl will spawn near them along with a couple of experience points.
There is, however, one other method of obtaining a Blue Axolotl.
It involves using commands which technically would be considered cheating.
Nevertheless, if you’re really desperate to get a Blue Axolotl, you can skip the genuine method of getting one and just type in the following command to make one spawn in your game: /summon minecraft:axolotl ~ ~ ~ {Variant:4}
How to Breed Other Axolotl Color Variations
The breeding process for the 4 other color variations of Axolotls is exactly the same as the one for Blue Axolotls.
The only difference is that you’ll be changing the colors of the parent Axolotls depending upon the Baby Axolotl you want to produce.
For instance, if you want to breed a Cyan Baby Axolotl, it’s optimal to breed 2 Cyan-colored Adult Axolotls.
Likewise, 2 Adult Leucistic Axolotls will most likely produce a Baby Leucistic Axolotl.
