Ginny Weasley Early Life

Ginny is the youngest child of Molly and Arthur Weasley. Her older siblings are Bill, Charlie, Percy, Fred, George, and Ron. She was both the baby and the only girl in the family.

All of her older brothers were interested in Quidditch. Ginny developed an interest in the sport at a young age too.

They would not let her play with them. But she had a habit of breaking into the family broom cupboard and trying out their brooms. She had to develop a quick wit and sense of humor to keep up with her brothers.

When Ginny met Harry Potter at just 10 years old, she immediately became star-struck and developed a crush on him. She lost her usually funny personality and was clumsy, and generally unable to speak.

She cried when she saw her final brother, Ron, off to Hogwarts for the first time in 1981. All her brothers promised to write to her and even to send her a Hogwarts toilet seat. Ginny was very excited to attend Hogwarts herself the following year.

Young Ginny Weasley

Ginny Starts at Hogwarts

In 1992, Ginny was finally old enough to join her brothers at Hogwarts. She traveled to Diagon Alley to get her school supplies with her family and Harry. He still made her extremely nervous.

She was forced to settle for second-hand robes and books. But Harry did give her a complete set of Gilderoy Lockhart’s works, which the author had gifted him in a publicity stunt.

Ginny stood up for Harry after this act of kindness when Draco Malfoy accused him of being fame-hungry. This incident led to an altercation between Lucius Malfoy, Draco’s father, and Arthur Weasley. The former considered Arthur a blood traitor, and the latter knew that Lucius had been a Death Eater.

During the altercation, Lucius slipped an enchanted diary that had belonged to Lord Voldemort into Ginny’s cauldron. She took the book home and later to Hogwarts without realizing what it was.

Ginny was sorted into Gryffindor when she arrived at school, like all of her brothers.

Ginny and Riddle’s Diary

When Ginny started at Hogwarts, she found the diary among her things and began writing in it. She was amazed when the diary wrote back. Ginny started to confide in the diary about how her brothers teased her at school and how she was ashamed of her second-hand things. She also told the diary all about Harry Potter.

The diary was actually the first Horcrux made by Lord Voldemort while he was still a young wizard attending Hogwarts under the name Tom Riddle.

He imprinted it with his memories from when he himself opened the Chamber of Secrets so that the diary could be used to open the Chamber again in the future.

Ginny Opens the Chamber of Secrets

With extended contact, the diary learned a lot about the modern-day. It also began to be able to take possession of Ginny for short periods of time.

By 31 October, Riddle took full control of Ginny and used her to open the Chamber of Secrets and release Slytherin’s monster. The monster petrified Mrs Norris, Filch’s cat. Ginny was forced to write “the Chamber of Secrets has been opened. Enemies of the heir, beware” on the wall nearby.

Riddle used her body to open the Chamber two further times. This led to Colin Creevey, Justin Finch-Fletchley, and the ghost Nearly Headless Nick being petrified. While Ginny’s brothers noticed her distress at these events, they put it down to other things.

Meanwhile, Ginny herself thought that she was going mad. She would often wake up not knowing where she had been. She herself began to suspect that she might be behind the attacks.

While staying at Hogwarts over Christmas, as her parents were visiting her brother Bill in Egypt, Ginny began to suspect that the diary might have something to do with her condition. She attempted to get rid of it by throwing it down a toilet in Moaning Myrtle’s bathroom.

Not long after, Ginny was horrified when she saw the diary that she thought she had destroyed in Harry’s bag. Fearing that he would discover the secrets that she had written there, she ransacked the boys’ dormitory to retrieve it.

Reunited with the diary, she fell under its spell again and opened the Chamber for the fourth time. On this occasion, Hermione Granger and Penelope Clearwater were petrified. In the aftermath, Ginny tried to confess to Harry and Ron what was happening. The diary prevented her from getting the words out.

Ginny Weasley has been taken!

At this point, Riddle’s spirit decided to proceed to his end game. He had decided to release the monster and to deal with Harry Potter, having learned of his role in his future downfall as Lord Voldemort.

Realizing that Harry would come to save Ginny, he forced her to write a message on a corridor wall that she had been taken to the Chamber of Secrets to die and then proceed to the Chamber. Once there, she lay down on the floor, and Riddle fed off her to become corporeal. Ginny herself slipped into an unconscious state.

Ginny in the Chamber of Secrets

When Ginny awoke in the Chamber, Harry was there, having defeated both Riddle and the monster. While her vitality was restored, she was scared that she would be expelled for her actions.

They ascended from the Chamber back up to the school with the help of the phoenix Fawkes. Ginny was reunited with her parents in Professor McGonagall’s office, as the teacher had sent for them when Ginny went missing.

Despite her fears, Albus Dumbledore was very understanding of her situation. He pointed out that the Dark Lord had duped older wizards. She was sent to the Hospital Wing to recover from her ordeal with a hot chocolate. Her involvement in the events was generally kept secret.

She returned to her normal self for the rest of the school year and revealed the secret that she had caught Percy kissing Penelope Clearwater.

Ginny Weasley Recovering

The following year at school was a relatively quiet one for Ginny. Before the school term, she traveled to Egypt with her family. They had won 700 galleons from the Daily Prophet.

Upon their return a few days before the start of the school term, they stayed at the Leaky Cauldron in Diagon Alley. This was to get their school supplies and stay close to the station. It was also to stay close to Harry, who was staying at the Leaky Cauldron after fleeing his aunt and uncle’s home. Ginny seemed even more embarrassed in front of Harry than usual.

On the way to school, she was in the train compartment with Harry, Ron, Hermione, Neville Longbottom, and Professor Lupin when the Dementors entered the train. She saw Harry’s reaction to them and had a very bad reaction herself due to her contact with Tom Riddle’s diary the previous year.

Later in the school year, when Harry fell from his broomstick when a group of Dementors invaded the Quidditch pitch, she made Harry a get-well card that sang shrilly. She blushed profusely when giving it to him.

Ginny Weasley Finds Herself

During her third year at Hogwarts, Ginny began to find her feet as a young woman. This was largely thanks to spending time with Hermione while she was staying at the Burrow over the summer.

Hermione advised Ginny to give up on her feelings for Harry, at least for now, and focus on being herself and having fun. She seems to have taken this advice to heart.

She attended the Quidditch World Cup with her family and supported Ireland along with the rest of her family. Like everyone, she was shaken by the Death Eater demonstration after the match. Her older brothers, Fred and George, were responsible for her safety during the events.

Ginny was as excited as everyone else when she arrived at Hogwarts to learn that the school would be hosting the Triwizard Tournament. She had no problem supporting Harry, despite some Hogwarts students resenting his position as a second, underage Hogwarts Champion alongside Cedric Diggory.

Ginny and the Yule Ball

The Yule Ball was big news at Hogwarts. Ginny was the only person Hermione told that she would attend with Viktor Krum. Ginny agreed to go with Neville Longbottom when he asked. She was only a third-year and would not be able to attend unless an older student invited her.

This meant that Ginny was not available when Ron suggested that she go with Harry. While this must have disappointed her, she stuck to her word and attended with Neville.

But she was still disappointed to hear that Harry had asked Cho Chang, even though she also turned him down because she already had a date. At the ball, Ginny met Michael Corner, and the two started dating before the end of the year.

When Harry returned at the end of the Triwizard Tournament with news that Lord Voldemort had returned, Ginny believed him, despite Ministry denials.

Ginny Weasley and the Order of the Phoenix

Following the return of Lord Voldemort, Ginny’s parents and older siblings Charlie and Bill joined the Order of the Phoenix to oppose the Dark Lord and his followers. The family spent most of the summer at the Order headquarters, the home of Sirius Black at 12 Grimmauld Place.

Ginny spent a lot of time with Hermione and Tonks over the summer. She also helped her mother clean the house of dark magic and curses to make it a suitable place for operations. Ginny was also much more relaxed when Harry arrived, thanks to Hermione’s advice and because she was dating Michael Corner.

Like the other younger Weasleys, Ginny was not allowed to participate in Order of the Phoenix meetings. But she did her best to eavesdrop and learn as much as possible.

When Harry finally pressured the group to fill him in, Ginny was the only one that her mother could expel from the meeting. She left grudgingly, but Hermione told her everything later anyway.

When Harry was acquitted of the charge of using magic in front of a muggle and therefore not expelled from Hogwarts, Ginny was pleased. She sang “he got off” with Fred and George.

On the train to Hogwarts, she introduced Harry and Neville to a Ravenclaw in her year, Luna Lovegood. She was one of the few people who treated the strange girl with respect.

Ginny Weasley and Dumbledore’s Army

When Dolores Umbridge arrived at the school as Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher and basically blocked the teaching of the subject, Ginny was one of the first people to show interest in learning from Harry when Hermione suggested it. She became a founding member of Dumbledore’s Army (the DA).

It was Ginny who came up with the name for the group in their first meeting. Cho Chang had previously suggested the Defence Association. But Ginny suggested Dumbledore’s Army since it was what the Ministry feared most.

Ginny immediately showed a talent for defensive magic with quick reflexes and powerful spell casting. All of her older brothers were impressed and a little jealous. She was one of the first to master the Patronus charm, with hers taking the form of a horse.

Ginny Joins the Gryffindor Quidditch Team

In the same school year, Harry, Fred, and George were banned from playing Quidditch. Ginny showed her skills and made the team as a replacement Seeker for Harry. While she played well, she admitted that she was not as good as Harry. She preferred playing Chaser and scoring goals.

Ginny was just as anxious as the rest of the family when her father was attacked by the snake Nagini, an attack that Harry saw through his connection with Lord Voldemort. Ginny was also one of the first to notice Harry withdrawing from the family. It was probably Ginny that alerted Hermione to the problem.

Hermione skipped a family ski trip to arrive and get Harry to stop hiding in Buckbeak’s room. She spoke to him with Ginny and Ron and learned that Harry was concerned that he had been possessed by Lord Voldemort and may have attacked Mr Weasley.

Ginny scolded him for not seeking advice from her, the only person he knows who has actually been possessed by Lord Voldemort. Based on her experience, she convinced him that he could not have been possessed.

While Ginny was visiting Mr Weasley with her family over Christmas, she, Harry, Ron, and Hermione learned the truth about what happened to Neville’s parents and how they were tortured to insanity by Death Eaters.

Ginny Weasley and the Confrontation with Dolores Umbridge

When Umbridge discovered the DA, the name that Ginny came up with saved Harry from being expelled. It allowed Dumbledore to claim that the group was under his direction. It was Dumbledore that left Hogwarts rather than Harry.

Ginny and Harry grew closer as they were able to speak about Quidditch, and Ginny could now speak normally. Ginny also broke up with Michael Corner, who was a sore loser after Gryffindor beat Ravenclaw in a Quidditch match with Ginny playing Seeker.

When Harry became concerned about Sirius’ safety, Ginny was one of the students who helped him break into Umbridge’s office to use her fireplace to speak to Sirius. She and Luna stopped people from entering the corridor by claiming that someone had flooded it with Garrotting Gas.

Unfortunately, Umbridge saw through the ruse and caught the six students involved with the help of her Inquisitorial Squad. Ginny was not an obedient captive and kept kicking the sixth-year girl in the shins who was holding her.

When Umbridge threatened to use the Cruciatus Curse on Harry to learn what she wanted to know, Hermione pretended to break down and agree to tell Umbridge. Ginny was initially horrified but soon realized that Hermione was luring Umbridge away.

With Hermione and Harry taking Umbridge into the Forbidden Forest, Ginny, Ron, Luna, and Neville were able to overpower the Inquisitorial Squad. Ginny dealt with Draco Malfoy, hitting him with a Bat-Bogey Hex.

Ginny Weasley and the Department of Mysteries

When the group reunited, Harry was determined to go to the Department of Mysteries to save Sirius, who he thought was in trouble there. Ginny, along with Luna and Neville, insisted on accompanying Harry, Ron, and Hermione, despite Harry’s objections.

The group flew on Thestrals to the Department, where they did not find Sirius, but they did find the prophecy about Harry and Lord Voldemort.

As soon as Harry had it in his hand, they were ambushed by a group of Death Eaters. Harry had been lured there specifically to retrieve the prophecy – you can only retrieve a prophecy from the Department of Mysteries if it is about you.

Ginny’s ankle was broken early in the battle, which restricted her ability to help the others. Fortunately, members of the Order of the Phoenix, tipped off by a cryptic message that Harry had passed to Severus Snape, arrived to help. Ginny survived and was taken to the Hospital Wing to recover.

Lord Voldemort’s return was finally exposed to the wider wizarding world. But sadly, Sirius Black was also killed in the battle.

On the train ride home, Ginny revealed that she had started dating Dean Thomas.

Ginny Weasley’s Love Life

Ginny was horrified to learn that her older brother Bill had proposed to Fleur Delacour after these events. She stayed at the Burrow with the family over the summer to get to know them better. Ginny disliked the way she glided through the house like a fairy princess and called her “Phlegm”.

When she returned to school in September, Ginny had a pet purple Pygmy that she had gotten at Fred and George’s joke shop in Diagon Alley. She sat with Dean on the Hogwarts Express and cursed Zacharias Smith when he questioned her about what happened in the Department of Mysteries.

The new Potions Master, Horace Slughorn, was so impressed by the Bat-Bogey Curse that she used on Zacharias that he invited her to lunch in his compartment with some other selected students. She was then one of the special students that he chose to be a member of his Slug Club.

Ginny tried out for the Gryffindor Quidditch team with Harry as Captain and was made Chaser. But things were not all smooth sailing. Ginny had a huge row with Ron when he scolded her for snogging Dean Thomas.

She pointed out that he was only upset because he had never kissed anyone. Their relationship was frosty for several weeks after.

Ginny Fights with Ron over Snogging

Ginny was a feisty Quidditch player and was often the top goal scorer. When Zacharias Smith was giving the team negative and unfair commentary during their match against Slytherin, she deliberately crashed her broomstick into his stand.

Her relationship with Ron did not improve when he started dating and publicly snogging Lavender Brown. She called him a filthy hypocrite.

She attended Slughorn’s Christmas Party with Dean, but her feelings for him seemed to wane over the break, which she spent at the Burrow with her family and Harry. But she did forgive her brother after he was poisoned and indulged Harry in his endless speculation about what had happened to Ron.

Ginny and Dean’s relationship became rocky, especially after he laughed when a Bludger hit Harry on the pitch by his own replacement keeper Cormac McLaggan.

In April, they finally broke up when Ginny got annoyed that he helped her through the Gryffindor portrait hole, and he denied it. Dean was telling the truth. Harry accidentally brushed up against Ginny while using Felix Felicis potion and using his invisibility cloak.

When Harry used the Sectumsempra curse on Draco Malfoy, he earned himself detention for the rest of the year and was unable to play Quidditch. Ginny played Seeker for Gryffindor in the Quidditch final and won the game.

Ginny and Harry shared a public kiss in the joy and excitement following the win. Dean was so surprised that he broke a class. The pair started dating. But their time together was limited since Harry had so much detention and Ginny was studying for her O.W.L. exams.

Ginny Weasley and the Battle of the Astronomy Tower

When Harry left Hogwarts on 30 June with Albus Dumbledore, he had a bad feeling that something would happen. He told Ron and Hermione to watch the Room of Requirement, where Draco Malfoy was up to something. He also told them to split what was left of the Felix Felicis potion between themselves and Ginny.

Soon, Draco was able to sneak a group of Death Eaters into Hogwarts, and a battle ensued between the Death Eaters and the students and members of the Order of the Phoenix who were on patrol. Ginny dueled with Amycus Carrow and suffered no injuries.

But in the aftermath, Ginny was shocked to learn that Dumbledore was dead at the hands of Severus Snape and that her brother Bill had been attacked by the werewolf Fenrir Greyback. Fortunately, it was not the full moon, so while Bill was permanently disfigured, he did not become a werewolf.

The silver lining of the incident was that it gave Fleur the opportunity to show the Weasleys that her feelings for Bill were genuine and not about his looks. Ginny accepted Fleur as a future sister-in-law from this time.

Ginny ended the year sitting her O.W.L. exams and spending time with Harry. But Harry broke up with Ginny as he knew he had a mission to find Horcruxes and did not want to put her in danger.

While she said that she didn’t care about the danger, she also accepted that she could not change his mind. She called his decision stupid nobility.

Ginny and the Final Summer

Ginny was not involved in the operation to transport Harry Potter from the home of the Dursleys to the Burrow on 27 July 1997. She was forced to wait at home with her mother for the 14 members of her family and the Order of the Phoenix to return.

She was relieved as each began to return safely but saddened to hear that Alastor Moody had been killed.

Ginny was friendly but distant with Harry over the following days. She cared for him greatly but did not want to make their separation more difficult than it needed to be. Nevertheless, on his birthday, she gave him a special kiss so that he would not forget her.

On 1 August, Ginny was a bridesmaid at Bill and Fleur’s funeral alongside Fleur’s younger sister. She danced with her friends in a gold dress that her Aunt Muriel called too low cut. Disguised as a Weasley cousin, Harry kept his distance and warned Viktor Krum off Ginny.

The wedding was interrupted when news arrived that the Minister for Magic had been killed and that the Death Eaters had taken over the Ministry. Harry, Ron, and Hermione left immediately. Ginny was unable to say goodbye as she battled a Death Eater. She was questioned with the rest of her family after the event.

Ginny and Harry’s kiss interrupted

Ginny at Hogwarts under Death Eater Control

Ginny was forced to return the Hogwarts, even though it was now under Death Eater control with Severus Snape as headmaster. The Ministry decided to mandate that all school-age wizards must attend so that the new regime could indoctrinate them.

Ginny joined Neville Longbottom and Luna Lovegood at school in reforming the DA to oppose Severus Snape and the Death Eater professors Alecto and Amycus Carrow.

She got into particular trouble when she was caught trying to steal Gryffindor’s Sword. Fortunately, Snape gave her detention in the Forbidden Forest with Hagrid rather than sending her to the Carrows, secretly protecting her.

Ginny was at home for Christmas when the Weasleys were exposed as supporters of Harry Potter. She went into hiding with her family and did not return to school.

Ginny Weasley and the Battle of Hogwarts

When Harry, Ron, and Hermione arrived at Hogwarts in May 1998, word went out that it was time to defend the school.

Ginny arrived at Hogwarts with her brothers, Lee Jordan, and Cho Chang. She showed a bit of possessiveness over Harry when Cho offered to escort him to Ravenclaw tower, insisting that Luna take him instead.

When Mr and Mrs Weasley arrived, they forbade their underage daughter to participate in the battle. Ginny objected that she could not wait at home for news of her entire family.

Lupin suggested that she stay in the Room of Requirement, where she could be close to hear the news. Ginny grudgingly agreed, but when Harry asked her to leave the room temporarily so that he could use the room to find a Horcrux, she took the opportunity to join the battle.

Ginny was devastated when her brother Fred was killed during the first part of the battle. But she still helped retrieve the injured and dead and comforted those she could.

She was heard to let out a scream of anger and anguish when she saw Harry’s ostensibly dead body. Ginny re-joined the battle with gusto, dueling Bellatrix Lestrange with Hermione and Luna. Bellatrix fired a Killing Curse that barely missed Ginny, prompting Mrs Weasly to step in and eventually kill Bellatrix.

While she was overjoyed to see that Harry was alive and then witness him kill Lord Voldemort, she gave him space in the aftermath of the battle, staying close to her family.

Ginny Weasley Later Life

Ginny and Harry were able to rekindle their romance after the end of the war. She was also able to pursue her passion for Quidditch and played Chaser on the Holyhead Harpies Quidditch Team.

She eventually retired to have a family with Harry. The pair had three children: James Sirius, Albus Severus, and Lily Luna. She became the senior Quidditch correspondent for the Daily Prophet. It was in this capacity that she attended the 2014 Quidditch World Cup along with her family.

In 2020, when her son Albus traveled back in time to 1981 with his friend Scorpius Malfoy, she joined Harry, Hermione, and Draco Malfoy in traveling back to save them and deal with Delphini Riddle.

Who did Ginny Weasley Date?

Ginny started dating Michael Corner at the end of her third year at Hogwarts after meeting him at the Yule Ball. At the end of her fourth year, she started dating Dean Thomas, but they broke up halfway through her fifth year. Only a few weeks after that, she started dating Harry Potter.

While Harry Potter broke up with Ginny before going on his Horcrux hunt to try and protect her, the two reunited soon after the end of the Second Wizarding War and chose to spend the rest of their lives together.

Ginny Weasley Personality Type & Traits

While Ginny Weasley was incredibly shy as a young girl, she soon grew into her own skin and found confidence in herself and her abilities. While she never stopped caring about Harry Potter, she learned to put her personal development and happiness first.

Growing up with six brothers, it is hardly surprising that Ginny was a bit of a tomboy and quite competitive. The youngest in the household always has to keep up!

She had an inner strength that enabled her to shine without excessive ego. Other students, such as Luna Lovegood, noted that she was always generous and kind.

Ginny Weasley Zodiac Sign & Birthday

Ginny was born on 11 August 1981, which means her zodiac sign is Leo. People born under this sign tend to be confident, big-hearted, and caring.

Ginny is not vain and boastful, often considered stereotypical Leo traits. But this is less common among Leos than many imagine. They are confident enough that the success of others does not threaten them.
