Griphook Biography

Griphook was one of the Goblins that ran Gringotts Wizarding Bank. He was already working there by the late 1980s.

In 1989/90, he tasked Curse Breaker Bill Weasley with retrieving a golden dragon egg forged by the famous Goblin blacksmith Urguff the Unwary.

This reflected his interest in Goblin-made artifacts.

Griphook was also the Goblin who escorted Harry Potter to his vault for the first time on 31 July 1991.

He also took Hagrid to the Hogwarts vault to retrieve the Philosopher’s stone. Someone broke into the same vault later that day.

Griphook shared some information about the bank’s defense mechanisms with young Harry. He said that only goblins can open the vault.

Anyone else would be sucked inside and trapped. They only check for imprisoned people once every ten years.

Griphook on the Run

Griphook was one of the Goblins that chose to go on the run when Lord Voldemort gained control of the Ministry of Magic in the summer of 1997 and put wizards in charge of the Goblins at Gringotts.

But he had one final laugh before he left. He was charged with putting Gryffindor’s Sword in the Lestrange vault. He decided not to inform anyone that it was a fake.

Griphook soon became part of a band of people on the run, including another Goblin called Gornuk, Dirk Cresswell, Ted Tonks, and Dean Thomas.

They spent several months together and discussed many matters.

The group was eventually caught by a gang of Snatchers led by the werewolf Fenrir Greyback.

Most of the group were killed. Gornuk and Dean were taken prisoner.

Shortly after, the same group of Snatchers also got their hands on Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley.

They were all taken to Malfoy Manor for identification and to be turned over to Lord Voldemort.

But Bellatrix Lestrange flew into a panic when she saw that the trio were in possession of Gryffindor’s sword, which was supposed to be in her vault.

She was very worried about what else they may have taken.

Bellatrix tortured Hermione for information, but she managed to lie and say that it was a fake. Griphook, who knew the truth, played along with this story.

Then the House-Elf Dobby arrived and helped everyone that was being held as a prisoner at Malfoy Manor escape.

Sadly, he died in the process. Harry hand-dug a grave for him at Shell Cottage, where they took shelter after escaping.

Griphook’s legs were badly damaged during the escape, so he was bedridden for a while.

But he watched Harry bury the House-Elf from a window, which earned Harry Griphook’s respect.

Griphook Breaks into Gringotts

This softened Griphook when Harry approached him to help them break into Gringotts and steal whatever the important object was that was in the Lestrange Vault.

He agreed to help but demanded Gryffindor’s Sword as payment, saying that it belonged to the Goblins anyway since it was Goblin-made and that it was Gryffindor who had stolen it.

Harry agreed but was careful not to say when he would hand over the sword since he knew that he would need it to destroy the remaining Horcruxes.

Bill Weasley, who was familiar with Goblins while working at the bank, warned Harry.

He said that while Goblins weren’t dishonest, they see the world differently from wizards, and he should be very careful about what he promised.

Together the trio and Griphook hatched a plan to break into Hogwarts that required Hermione to impersonate Bellatrix Lestrange using Polyjuice Potion and use the wand that they had taken from her during the escape from the Manor as identification.

By the time they reached the bank, word of what happened at Malfoy Manor had already spread, and they ended up using the Imperius Curse on another of the Gringotts Goblins, Bogrod, to gain entry.

While Griphook helped them enter the vault and retrieve Helga Hufflepuff’s cup, which was what they were looking for, as soon as this was done, he grabbed the sword. He had never trusted Harry to hand it over.

Griphook escaped back into the caves where the other Goblins were arriving to catch the thieves and joined them.

Nevertheless, the trio escaped by freeing the Ukrainian Ironbelly Dragon that was used for security in the vaults and flying away on its back.

Death of Griphook

Having rejoined the Gringotts Goblins, Griphook was among those summoned to Malfoy Manor to explain to Lord Voldemort what had happened.

Still clutching Gryffindor’s Sword, Griphook revealed that they had taken the cup.

The Dark Lord flew into a rage and killed many in the room indiscriminately, including Griphook.

The sword faded away when he died. Part of its enchantment seems to have been that it could go where it was needed.

So, the sword returned to Hogwarts and waited to be called by Neville Longbottom during the Battle of Hogwarts.

Griphook Personality Type & Traits

During the planning process for the bank heist, Griphook showed that he was ruthless and had no problem hurting others to meet his objectives.

But he was also extremely pragmatic and analytical in his thinking.

He strongly resented the way that wizards treated Goblins and other magical creatures.

Griphook was particularly irritated that wizards refused to share wand-lore with Goblins. He assumed this was to limit the magic of Goblins.

He was also very interested in Goblin-made artifacts and considered them his birth-right.

Griphook Zodiac Sign & Birthday

We do not know anything about Griphook’s birthday. But his personality suggests that his zodiac sign could be Virgo.

Virgos are intelligent and pragmatic and can deal with things unemotionally. This is reflected in Griphook’s ruthlessness.

They also tend to live by a strong moral code. Griphook does this, even if his code is a bit different.
