Hannah Abbot was a colleague of Harry Potter at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She was in the same year as Harry at Hogwarts but was a member of Hufflepuff House.

We experience many of the goings-on at Hogwarts through the eyes of Hannah. She seems to start out as a relatively immature student, much more typical of an eleven-year-old than Harry and Hermione.

She matures throughout the books and becomes prefect of her house and a member of the DA in her fifth year. In her sixth year, she is forced to return home when her mother is killed by Death Eaters. But she returns the following year when school attendance becomes mandatory and fights alongside her fellow students and staff at the Battle of Hogwarts.

Hannah seems to have had an aptitude for Herbology, which may explain the romance between her and Neville Longbottom after they finished school. She took over as Landlady of the Leaky Cauldron in Hogsmeade for a while before retraining as a healer and becoming the Hogwarts Matron.

Hannah Abbott at Hogwarts

Hannah Abbott

Hannah Abbott started at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the same year as Harry Potter. She was the first of the new students examined by the sorting hat and placed in Hufflepuff house. She provides a “normal student’s” perspective on the happenings at Hogwarts over the years.

In her second year, Hannah is convinced by Ernie Macmillan that Harry must be Slytherin’s heir because he speaks parseltongue. She apologizes to Harry for doubting him after the Basilisk attacks Hermione.

In her third year, Hannah was very interested in gossiping about Azkaban escapee Sirius Black. She spread the idea that he escaped Azkaban by transforming into a flowering shrub. She was not completely wrong; Sirius turned himself into a dog to avoid the influence of the dementors and later escaped.

The fourth year saw Hannah begin to show aptitude for herbology. She supported fellow Hufflepuff Cedric Diggory in the Triwizard Championship and showed some animosity towards Harry for “usurping” Hogwarts’ champion. Nevertheless, she believed Harry when he reported that Lord Voldemort killed Cedric.

In her fifth year, Hannah was very stressed about preparing for exams and even had to be taken to the hospital wing for a calming draught. She reluctantly joined the DA, fearing the consequences of breaking the rules. Nevertheless, she learned defense against the dark arts from Harry when Dolores Umbridge banned it.

Hannah was only at Hogwarts briefly in her sixth year as she was pulled out of herbology class early in the year to be told that her mother had been found dead, presumably killed by Death Eaters. She went come and did not return to school.

She did return the following year when Hogwarts attendance was made mandatory. Hannah joined the newly formed DA wih Neville Longbottom, Ginny Weasley, and Luna Lovegood to raise opposition to the new headmaster Severus Snape and the Carrows. She stayed on and fought in the Battle of Hogwarts.

After the end of the Wizarding, War Hannah returned to Hogwarts to complete her education.

Hannah Abbot Personality Type & Traits

Hannah comes across as a typical young teenager. She is excited but uninformed about the happenings at Hogwarts and enjoys coming up with fanciful ideas with her friends. She also lacks confidence in her academic abilities, as demonstrated by her breakdown over exam stress.

Hannah seems to believe in doing what is right, as shown by the fact that she proactively apologized to Harry for thinking that he was Slytherin’s heir. She also joined the DA and fought actively against the Death Eater presence at Hogwarts.

The murder of her mother by Death Eaters while still young, in her sixth year at Hogwarts, probably had a profound effect on Hannah.

Hannah Abbot Zodiac Sign & Birthday

While Hannah must have been born in 1979 or 1980 to have been in the same year at Hogwarts as Harry, her specific birthdate, and therefore zodiac sign, are never revealed by J.K. Rowling. Some fans suggest that she might be a Cancer since her emotions run close to the surface.

Is Hannah Abbott a Pure Blood?

Hannah says explicitly that she is a half-blood witch. But she she is also a member of the prestigious Abbott family, which was one of the “sacred twenty-eight.” This is a list of 28 British families believed to still be genuinely pure blood in the 1930s.

Hannah says that one of her ancestors was muggle-born, suggesting it was not one of her parents. It must have been one of her grandparents or great-grandparents.

Hannah Abbot Family Tree

We know very little about Hannah’s family tree. We know that she is descended from the Abbott family, which was still considered a genuinely pure-blood family until the 1930s. Hannah has at least one muggle-born ancestor, presumably dating from after the 1930s.

Like many pureblood families, the Abbotts seem to have had a traditional residence at Godric’s Hollow, just like the Potters, the Dumbledores, and the Peverels.

Hannah may be related to Giffard Abbott, a wizard who has a portrait in Hogwart’s Castle. Rowling never reveals the name of Hannah’s mother, who Death Eaters killed in 1996.

Who Did Hannah Abbott Marry?

After school, Hannah married Neville Longbottom. He worked as a professor of herbology at Hogwarts while she was landlady of the Leaky Cauldron in Hogsmeade. The two lived above the pub. When Hannah later became matron of Hogwarts, the two presumably lived together in the castle. The two do not yet have any children of their own.

Hannah Abbott Wand

The composition of Hannah’s wand is unknown, but she presumably got her wand at Ollivander’s prior to her first year. Her mother would have taken her there to see which wand would choose her daughter.

Hannah Abbot Patronus

A Patronus is a non-corporeal protective shield that some wizards can conjure to protect themselves against dark forces, such as the dementors. It takes the form of an animal that has some affinity with the caster.

We never learn about the nature of Hannah’s Patronus. But she presumably learned to cast one as a member of the DA in her fifth year at Hogwarts.

What Happened to Hannah Abbott?

After fighting in the Battle of Hogwarts, Hannah Abbott returned to Hogwarts to complete her studies. She initially chose to become the landlady of the Leaky Cauldron pub in Hogsmeade. Later she trained as a healer and went on to become the matron of Hogwarts (the role previously occupied by Madam Pomfrey).
