How to Create Base Potions in Minecraft 1.20 (2024)

How to Create Base Potions in Minecraft 1.20 (2024)

Brewing is a portion of Minecraft that most players tend to overlook. Trust us; this is one of the greatest mistakes you can make in your survival journey. Due to the enormous perks they offer, Potions are a must-have, but they can be challenging to create.

If you’re shying away from brewing Potions because you’re unable to understand how the process works, don’t worry; that’s exactly what we’re covering today!

What is Brewing in Minecraft 1.20?

The process of creating potions is called Brewing in Minecraft. This process is carried out using a Brewing Stand utility block. Players can create many different potions with varieties such as ordinary, Splash, Lingering, Extended, and Enhanced.

Before you can start Brewing some basic Potions, you’ll need to create a Brewing Stand using 1x Blaze Rod and 3x Stone. You’ll also need some Blaze Powder to fuel this stand and start the brewing process. Blaze Rods obtained from slaying Blaze mobs can be converted to Blaze Powder using a Crafting Table!

Once you have some Blaze Powder and a Brewing Stand, you’re ready to move on to the next step – creating basic Potions!

Creating Base Potions in Minecraft

Base Potions are foundational-level Potions that, by themselves, have no effect whatsoever. These are created by mixing additional ingredients into a Water Bottle. This table summarizes significant details of all the Base Potions.

Potion NameIngredientsEffect
Awkward 1x Water Bottle, 1x Nether WartUsed as an ingredient for Effect Potions
Mundane 1x Water Bottle, 1x Sugar / Rabbit’s Foot / Magma Cream / Ghast Tear / Redstone Dust / Glistering Melon Slice / Spider Eye / Blaze PowderUsed as an alternative to a Water Bottle in creating a Potion of Weakness
Thick 1x Water Bottle, 1x Glowstone DustNone

There are three types of Base Potions in Minecraft 1.20, all of which we’ll cover below!

Note: This guide assumes that you’ve already gathered all required ingredients and are ready to move on to the Brewing process. If you need help collecting the required ingredients, refer to the end of the guide.

Awkward Potion

Brewing Pattern for Awkward Potion

An Awkward Potion is the most critical Base Potion from all three options.

This potion is an ingredient for creating many other Effect Potions, making its crafting recipe a must-know. To create an Awkward Potion, you’ll need a Water Bottle and some Nether Wart as ingredients.

Follow these steps to create an Awkward Potion in Minecraft:

  • Interact with the Brewing Stand to open up its menu.
  • Place some Blaze Powder in the left-most slot to charge up the stand.
  • Insert a Nether Wart in the top-most slot at the right side of the Brewing Menu.
  • Put in a Water Bottle in any of the three slots on the right side of the Brewing Menu. (You may place them in all 3 slots as well)
  • Wait for the Brewing process to complete, and collect the resulting Awkward Potion!

Mundane Potion

Brewing Pattern for Mundane Potion

A Mundane Potion is almost useless – but not entirely! It can be an alternative ingredient to the Water Bottle when creating a Potion of Weakness. Although there isn’t much point in going through this process since using a Water Bottle would be much more convenient – it’s still a viable option.

A Mundane Potion can be created using a Water Bottle and any of the following materials: Sugar, Rabbit’s Foot, Glistering Melon Slice, Spider Eye, Ghast Tear, Magma Cream, Blaze Powder, and Redstone Dust.

You can create a Mundane Potion in Minecraft through these steps:

  • Interact with the Brewing Stand to open up its menu.
  • Place some Blaze Powder in the left-most slot to charge up the stand.
  • Insert any of the above-mentioned ingredients in the top-most slot at the right side of the Brewing Menu.
  • Put in a Water Bottle in any of the three slots on the right side of the Brewing Menu. (You may place them in all 3 slots as well)
  • Wait for the Brewing process to complete, and collect the resulting Mundane Potion!

Thick Potion

Brewing Pattern for Thick Potion

The last Base Potion you can create in Minecraft is a Thick Potion – and it’s absolutely pointless!

Seriously, this Potion cannot be used for anything and is, thus, an absolute waste of your resources. If, for some reason, you’re still interested in creating this one – you’ll need some Glowstone Dust.

Here’s how you can create a Thick Potion in Minecraft:

  • Interact with the Brewing Stand to open up its menu.
  • Place some Blaze Powder in the left-most slot to charge up the stand.
  • Insert a Glowstone Dust in the top-most slot at the right side of the Brewing Menu.
  • Put in a Water Bottle in any of the three slots on the right side of the Brewing Menu. (You may place them in all 3 slots as well)
  • Wait for the Brewing process to complete, and collect the resulting Thick Potion.

This covers everything you need to know about creating all the 3 Base Potions in Minecraft. You can now move on to creating powerful Effect Poisons such as the Potion of Strength or the Potion of Night Vision!

Collecting the Ingredients for Base Potions

If you’re having difficulty obtaining the required ingredients to brew these Potions, check out this table summarizing the sources of each ingredient required in creating all 3 Base Potions!

IngredientSource
Nether WartNether Fortresses & Bastion Remnants
Water BottleInteract with water bodies using a Glass Bottle
SugarSugar Cane, Honey & Mob Loot
Rabbit’s FootMob Loot (Rabbits)
Glistering Melon SliceCrafting, Trading & Chest Loot

Ghast TearMob Loot (Ghasts)
Magma CreamMob Loot, Crafting & Chests
Blaze PowderCrafting with Blaze Rods
Redstone DustMining, Natural Generation & Mob/Chest loot
Glowstone DustMining, Mob Loot & Trading

Each of these is explained in more depth below!

Nether Wart

Nether Wart is primarily obtained through harvesting Nether Wart Crops. These are naturally found in two central locations – Nether Fortresses and Bastion Remnants. For the former, they commonly generate near stairwells located in small Soul Sand Gardens.

For the latter, Nether Wart can commonly be spotted growing in the central courtyard areas of Bastion Remnants (with housing units). One way or another, you’ll have to make a trip to the Nether world!

Water Bottle

Interacting with any source of water while having a Glass Bottle in hand fills it up with water – giving you a Water Bottle. Glass Bottles can be crafted using 3 blocks of Glass.

To craft them, you’ll have to place one Glass each in the left and right spots of the center row of the Crafting Grid. Then, place the last Glass block in the middle of the bottom row. The result should be 3x Glass Bottles!

Sugar

Sugar seen in player inventory

Sugar is crafted through the conversion of Sugarcane or Honey. Sugarcane is found scattered all across the Overworld, spawning near water bodies. You can convert each Sugarcane you collect into one piece of Sugar, whereas each bottle of Honey yields 3x Sugar.

Sugar can also be obtained as Mob Loot dropped by Witches in quantities ranging from 0 to 2.

Redstone Dust

Redstone Dust is primarily obtained through mining Redstone Ore (with an Iron Pickaxe). Each Redstone Ore mined in this way drops 4-5 Redstone Dust each. Check this post out if you need help finding Redstone Ore.

Redstone Dust can also be generated naturally (in varying capacities) in Jungle Pyramids, Woodland Mansions, and Ancient Cities. Lastly, you may find some of it dropped as Mob Loot from slaying Witches or within Treasure Chests scattered within different Structures.

Glowstone Dust

Primarily obtained through mining Glowstone blocks, you can receive 2-4 pieces of Glowstone Dust each time you undergo this process. It can also be obtained by killing Witch mobs, which can net you 0-6 Glowstone Dust for each Witch you slay!

Lastly, Cleric Villagers (Journeyman-level) will trade you 1x Glowstone Dust for 1x Emerald (terrible trade!).

Rabbit’s Foot

Rabbits Foot seen in player inventory

Your main method of obtaining a Rabbit’s Foot is killing Rabbit mobs. Each Rabbit you kill has a 10% chance of dropping the foot as loot. Alternatively, if you have a tamed Cat, your pet has a 16% chance of bringing you a Rabbit’s Foot as a gift each morning!

Glistering Melon Slice

Glistering Melon Slice seen in player inventory

A Glistering Melon Slice can be obtained through combining a Melon Slice and Gold Nuggets on a Crafting Grid. The former is easy to collect, and the latter is crafted through Gold Ore. This post will help you find Gold Ore in no time!

Additionally, it’s also sometimes available in Chests within Ruined Portals. Lastly, Farmer Villagers (Master Level) offer 3x Glistering Melon Slice in exchange for 4x Emerald as a trade.

Magma Cream

Magma Cream seen in player inventory

All Magma Cube mobs (except mini-sized) will drop Magma Cream when killed. You can also craft it using Slimeball and Blaze Powder as ingredients. Finally, varying amounts of Magma Cream can be found through Generic and Treasure Chests generated within Bastion Remnants.

Blaze Powder

Blaze Powder seen in player inventory

The only method of obtaining Blaze Powder is by converting Blaze Rods. Each Blaze Rod placed on a Crafting Table can be converted to 2x Blaze Powders.

Blaze Rods are exclusively dropped by the ‘Blaze’ mob found in the Nether world. Each Blaze you kill has a 50% chance to drop a Blaze Rod. Be careful; a Blaze can be tough to slay and will pose a massive challenge if you’re not well-prepared.

Note: Blaze mobs will only drop the rod if slain by yourself or a tamed Wolf. If killed by any other source, the mob will NOT drop any Blaze Rods.

Ghast Tear

Ghast Tear seen in player inventory

Ghast Tears are exclusively obtained as Mob Loot by killing Ghasts. Each Ghast you slay has a chance of dropping 0-1 Ghast Tears!

Spider Eye

Spider Eye seen in player inventory

Spider Eyes are collected by slaying Spider mobs. Each Spider or Cave Spider killed has a 33% chance of dropping a Spider Eye. Thus, the quickest way to obtain these would be to venture deep into a cave and wreak havoc on some unsuspecting Spiders!

Witches can also drop anywhere between 0 and 6 Spider Eyes when killed.
