How to Install Shaders in Minecraft 1.20: OptiFine & Iris

How to Install Shaders in Minecraft 1.20: OptiFine & Iris

If you’re tired of the default visuals of Minecraft and are looking to spice things up in the graphical departments – try out some new Shader packs!

In a nutshell, Shaders provide graphical overhauls to the Vanilla Minecraft and make visual improvements to multiple departments such as overall lighting, bloom, occlusion, motion blur, and the like.

Installing and setting these shaders up, however, can often be a complicated process. No need to worry though since that’s exactly what we’ll be helping you out with today!

How Can You Install Shaders in Minecraft 1.20?

You can install Shaders using Iris or Optifine in Minecraft 1.20 Trails & Tales. Both these softwares have to be externally downloaded. They allow you to install and customize Shader packs which can then be launched in Vanilla Minecraft.

There are two main avenues you can opt for when wanting to use Shaders in Minecraft – Iris Shaders for Optifine. As explained, both of these are external softwares but are completely trusted and safe to use.

For your convenience, we’ll explain both the methods below so you may choose either of them! (Remember though, the version of Shader you use must match your game’s version – it won’t work otherwise)

Installing With Iris Shaders

Follow these steps to use Shaders with Iris:

  1. Download Iris Shaders Installer (Universal JAR version) from the official website.

  1. Open the Setup, select the game version you wish to install Shaders for, and press “Install”.

  1. Download the Shader you want to apply to your game.
  1. Open your Minecraft Installation Folder (You can do this by pressing Windows+R and entering “%appdata”).

  1. Open the “.minecraft” folder located here and move/copy & paste your desired Shader in the “shaderspack” folder. If it doesn’t exist, you can make a new one.
