How to Repair A Bow in Minecraft 1.20 (2024)

An arsenal of effective and durable weapons should be at the top of your priority list when starting a new Minecraft survival world. After all, the primary objective here is to survive!

Bows, in that regard, are some of the most reliable weapons you can have. They’ve managed to land themselves in our list of most powerful weapons in Minecraft 1.20! Nevertheless, a downside of using Bows is that they can lose durability quickly- which we’re covering today.

Here’s how you can repair your Bow and increase its durability in Minecraft 1.20.

How to Repair a Bow in Minecraft?

You can repair a bow using an Anvil, Grindstone, or Crafting Table/Slot in Minecraft. Repairing a Bow through an Anvil retains any Enchantments the weapon initially had. In contrast, using a Grindstone or Crafting Table/Slot removes any enchantments added to the Bow.

Your Bow will lose ‘Durability’ points each time you use it. Without considering any Enchantments, each Bow has 385 Durability Points.

As explained, you have 3 main avenues for increasing your Bow’s durability once it weakens. You’ll have to use utility blocks such as an Anvil, Grindstone, or Crafting Table to do so. The Crafting Table method may also be substituted by directly repairing the Bow through the Crafting Grid in your inventory – making the process much more convenient.

In a nutshell, you’ll have a trade-off between quality and convenience when selecting these 3 methods – so choose wisely! We’ll explain each of these below so you can choose the optimal one according to your situation.

Repairing a Bow via Anvil

Using an Anvil to repair your Bow should be the ideal choice if you have any Enchantments attached to the weapon. An Anvil is a utility block that can repair weapons without removing their Enchantments. Thus, if you plan on retaining your Bow’s existing Enchantment while simultaneously repairing its durability – this is your go-to option.

Follow these steps to repair your Bow with an Anvil in Minecraft 1.20:

  • Interact with the Anvil to open up its menu.
  • Place the Bow to be fixed in either of the two slots on the left side of the menu.
  • Place another Bow in the remaining slot on the left side of the menu.
  • Collect the repaired Bow from the right-most slot of the menu.

Repairing a Bow via Grindstone

If you don’t have existing Enchantments on your Bow and want to increase its durability – a Grindstone is your best bet.

This utility block is commonly used to repair and disenchant equipment. However, this is an excellent option because weapons fixed with a Grindstone have their ‘Durability’ increased by 5%. Thus, a Grindstone is perfect if your weapon is unenchanted and you prefer longevity over convenience.

Follow these steps to repair your Bow with a Grindstone in Minecraft 1.20:

  • Interact with the Grindstone to open up its menu.
  • Place your Bow in one of the two slots of the Grindstone.
  • Place another Bow in the remaining slot of the Grindstone.
  • Collect the repaired Bow from the right-most slot of the menu.

Repairing a Bow via Crafting Table/Slot

Finally, the last technique of repairing a Bow is through a Crafting Table or the Crafting Slots in your player inventory. Using either of these has the same process and outcomes. Since using your player inventory to repair a Bow eliminates the use of a Utility Block (unless you do this via a Crafting Table), this repair method is highly convenient.

However, similar to the Grindstone technique, this method removes any previous Enchantments your Bow may have. You won’t receive the 5% increased ‘Durability’ perk when repairing through a Crafting Table or your inventory slots. In short, this method of repair is ideal if your weapon is unenchanted and you prefer convenience over longevity.

Follow these steps to repair your Bow with a Crafting Table/Inventory Slots in Minecraft 1.20:

  • Interact with the Crafting Table or Open your inventory to bring up the Crafting Menu.
  • Place both bows in any available slot of the Crafting Menu.
  • Collect the repaired Bow from the right-most slot of the menu.

That’s all you have to do. You’re now aware of everything there is to know about repairing your Bow through all three possible methods. Now, go out there and hunt some wicked Mobs with your newly acquired knowledge!
