Igor Karkaroff was a dark wizard from Europe who was one of Lord Voldemort’s Death Eaters during the First Wizarding War. He provided information to the Wizengamot in exchange for being pardoned, and went on to become the Headmaster of the Durmstrang Institute, a European school of magic more tolerant of the dark arts.

Karkaroff led the Durmstrang delegation to Hogwarts for the Triwizard Tournament in 1994. There, when he realized that his Dark Mark was returning and what it must mean, he fled. He was murdered by Death Eaters in summer 1996 for his treachery.

Igor Karkaroff Early Years

Very little is known about the young Igor Karkaroff, but his name suggests that he was from Eastern Europe, and he probably studied magic at the Durmstrang Institute.

While Lord Voldemort was mostly active in the United Kingdom, Igor Karkaroff still decided to join his cause. During his time as a Death Eater he became acquainted with the likes of Severus Snape, and reportedly helped Antonin Dolohov torture muggles and other wizards.

After the fall of Lord Voldemort, he was captured by the Auror Alastor Moody and sent to Azkaban.

Karkaroff offered information to the Council of Magical Law in exchange for release from Azkaban. As well as claiming remorse, he gave the names of Dolohov, Evan Rosier, Travers, Mulciber, and Severus Snape. When he realized that the Wizengamot already had this information and that it would not help him, he pointed the finger at Augustus Rookwood, who was an Unspeakable working for the Ministry.

He may have had other hearings in which he revealed more names, as he was eventually released.

After being released, Karkaroff went on to become the headmaster of Durmstrang Institute. How he got the job is unclear, and many people complained that he was unprincipled and used fear to control the students. He also clearly showed favoritism, as in the case of Viktor Krum, the young Bulgarian Seeker who also attended the school.

Igor Karkaroff and the Triwizard Tournament

When the Triwizard Tournament was held for the first time in over a century at Hogwarts in 1994-1995, Karkaroff led a delegation from his school to Hogwarts, where they also met a delegation from Beauxbatons School in France.

While he led a delegation of students, it is clear that Karkaroff assumed that Viktor Krum would be chosen as champion for the school, which he was. He was understandably outraged when Harry was entered into the tournament as a second champion for Hogwarts. This was a clear indicator that he was not responsible for putting Harry’s name in the cup.

Karkaroff and Viktor Krum

Throughout the Tournament he did everything he could to support Krum. He gave him inside information about the tasks, gave Harry low scores where he could get away with it, and warned Viktor against dating Hermione Granger, since she was a friend of Harry. He even accused Albus Dumbledore of foul play when a confused Barty Crouch Snr attacked Viktor Krum.

Igor Karkaroff and the Return of Lord Voldemort

Karkaroff’s behavior became increasingly suspicious over the course of the tournament. But it soon became clear that he was less preoccupied with the Tournament than he was with the reappearance of his Dark Mark. Given to him by Lord Voldemort, he knew that this must mean that the Dark Lord was returning. He cornered Snape to share his concerns about this development.

Severus, you cannot pretend this isn’t happening! It’s been getting clearer and clearer for months. I am becoming seriously concerned, I can’t deny it —

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

When Lord Voldemort called his followers to the cemetery in Little Hangleton following the third task of the Triwizard Tournament, rather than go there and face retribution for sharing information after Lord Voldemor’s downfall, he fled.

He survived on the run for about a year. In the summer of 1996 he was tracked down and killed by Death Eaters, who cast the Dark Mark over his body.

Igor Karkaroff Personality Type & Traits

Igor Karkaroff was probably an intelligent man, as he was able to become headmaster of a prestigious school. His interests were peaked by the dark arts, and as a young man he was willing to travel to the United Kingdom to learn from Lord Voldemort.

But Karkaroff always put his own interests first. He betrayed colleagues to save his own skin, he cheated to help his school win a competition, and he fled rather than face the consequences of his actions.

Igor Karkaroff Zodiac Sign & Birthday

We do not know when Igor Karkaroff was born. He must have been born before 1965 to have been old enough to be active in the First Wizarding War.
