Madam Pince the Librarian

Madam Pince was a British witch, who presumably attended Hogwarts like her contemporaries to learn the art of magic. She later returned to the school to act as a librarian sometime before 1974.

Madam Pince was considered strict and unhelpful by students. She seemed to prefer that books stay on the shelves rather than risk them in the hands of young witches and wizards. She would occasionally place a jinx or hex on a library book for their own protection.

When Albus Dumbledore wanted to take Quidditch Through the Ages from the library to publish it for muggles, he had to pry it from her hands. She included a note in the book warning readers against damaging it.

A warning: If you rip, tear, shred, bend, fold, deface, disfigure, smear, smudge, throw, drop, or in any other manner damage, mistreat, or show lack of respect towards this book, the consequences will be as awful as it is within my power to make them.

Irma Pince, Quidditch Through the Ages

In 1988/9, she was entrusted to organize the school’s Valentine’s Day Ball. She was assisted by Argus Filch, and it seems that the two may have shared a romantic interest. They two attended the ball together.

Madam Pince and Harry Potter

When Harry started at Hogwarts, he saw Pince as an obstacle to accessing the restricted section to try and discover information about Nicolas Flamel. His opinion of her did not change over the years. In the following year, when Hermione had a note from Gilderoy Lockhart letting her access a potion book in the restricted section, Pince examined it closely.

Her caution does not seem to have been unjustified. She was seen stamping out a pile of burning books for Hannah Abbott on one occasion. When she caught Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley in the library with chocolate, she bewitched their belongings to chase them out.

She seems to have had a minor heart attack when she saw the state of the old potions book that Harry had found in the potions cupboard, assuming that he had been the one who had defaced it.

Madam Pince also sometimes watched over students in Study Hall.

Madam Pince attended the funeral of Albus Dumbledore. She also continued to work at the school when it came under Death Eater control, presumably to provide protection to the students. She probably remained and fought in the Battle of Hogwarts on 2 May 1998.

Irma Pince Personality Type & Traits

Irma Pince comes across as someone who likes order and cleanliness, and who enjoys being in complete control of her domain. She is more concerned about keeping the library clean and ordered than making it a learning space for students.
