Jujutsu Kaisen Watch List Order

While the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is a prequel, the story revolves around a different protagonist.

For the best experience, we recommend that you watch the first season of Jujutsu Kaisen, followed by the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie.

While they are in the same universe, the movie and the anime series are not directly related. The movie assumes you already know about the “cursed items;” hence it could be confusing to new watchers.

Jujutsu Kaisen anime starts off with the normal life of a high schooler named Itadori Yuuji, a reliable, loud, strong, and an insanely athletic 15-year-old.

Despite his athletic capabilities, he does not belong to any sports club but instead opted to join an occult club, made up of two second-year senpais and himself, although as an unofficial member.

Acting on the essence of the club’s nature, they talked about the supernatural and began to discuss the rumors surrounding the school’s rugby field and talks about a cursed charm.

Yuji was caught in a tough situation trying to save his “senpais,” as the cursed charm unsealed by his two occult club seniors that came in the form of a rotten finger was a powerful, vengeful spirit that belonged to Ryomen Sukuna, one of the main antagonists of the show.

In his desperation to save their lives, he swallowed the finger whole, and the entity’s power was merged into his body, making him a vessel for the once human sorcerer turned curse.

From that point on, Yuuji’s life will be thrust into a world completely unbeknownst to him, and his life as the vessel of the “King of Curses” and his life as a sorcerer will be set into motion.

Duration1h 45min
IMDb Rating7.9/10

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 focuses on Okkutsu Yuta, a wimpy, lanky 16-year-old with heavy bags under his eyes, emphasizing that he is a mainly sleep-deprived character who lucked out in life.

From the start of the movie, Yuta has no will to fight or live, constantly being haunted by nightmares and is even seen being persecuted by some fellow male classmates.

However, he always comes out unscathed in situations that would bring him harm, as he is protected by a cursed spirit named Orimoto Rika, a powerful special grade curse enough to be bestowed the title “Queen of Curses.”

Rika is Yuuta’s childhood friend and first love, who tragically died in a car accident.

Due to the shock of seeing her violent demise, he unconsciously cursed her in his denial of her death and bound her spirit into his own.

Because of the nature of his power and the curse that he possesses, he was enrolled in Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School.

It is where he meets significant people in his life that will pull him back up to his feet and help him gain control of his powers.

Is Jujutsu Kaisen 0 a Prequel?

The anime has 24 episodes in season 1. A prequel was released in the form of a movie titled: Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which premiered one year after the anime series on December 24, 2021.

It is important to note that the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie is not directly a prequel to the anime’s first season.

Before JJK was put into fruition, Yuuta’s plot was based on a manga written before the series.

Therefore, the storyline does not technically disturb the flow of events that took place in the anime’s season 1.

Should I Watch Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Movie First?

While there is no real harm in watching the movie first, as a new viewer of the anime, we highly recommend watching season 1 of the series first as it better introduces the world of Jujutsu Kaisen.

The series gives an in-depth definition and background of the world of “sorcerers,” people with special abilities and powers who are responsible for killing and annihilating “curses” that plague their society and silently wreaking havoc on unsuspecting citizens.

In the series, you will be introduced to Itadori Yuuji, an ordinary 15-year-old freshman in high school; athletic and full of spunk like any young man in their teens.

Just like the spectators, and the protagonist Yuji who has no prior knowledge of the universe of JJK, the show starts off confusing, leaving viewers scratching their heads.

But as it progresses from one episode to another, bits and pieces of information will finally make things more sensible.

After completing season 1, viewers are now prepped with ample knowledge and are ready to watch the movie, which makes the experience more enjoyable, unlike when you are confused and can’t keep up because of the lack of context.
