Luna Lovegood Early Life
Luna is the only child of Xenophilius Lovegood, the editor of the wizarding magazine The Quibbler, and Pandora Lovegood. Sadly, Luna’s mother was accidentally killed while experimenting with a spell when Luna was just nine years old. But her father remained very dedicated to his daughter.
Luna started attending Hogwarts in 1992 and was sorted into Ravenclaw House. She was one of the few students who was able to see the Thestrals that pull the Hogwarts carriages. Only people who have witnessed a close death can see them.
Luna was often teased by her fellow students as she believed in many of the unusual stories printed in the Quibbler and generally had some quite strange behavior. Luna was aware that many of her fellow students referred to her as “Loony” Lovegood. In part, this referred to her tendency to speak the truth in an unflinching but non-judgmental way.
Luna is a fan of Quidditch. She attended the Quidditch World Cup with her father in the summer of 1994.
Luna and Dumbledore’s Army
Luna met Harry Potter in her fourth year when they sat in the same compartment on the train to Hogwarts. She was open in telling Harry that she believed his statement of the previous year that Lord Voldemort had returned. She was also already acquainted with Ginny Weasley, as they were in the same year.
Luna was one of the students invited to participate in Defence Against the Dark Arts classes with Harry when Professor Umbridge stopped practical teaching of the subject. This group would go on to be known as Dumbledore’s Army, or the DA for short.
Luna learned quickly and was soon able to cast a corporeal Patronus in the form of a hare. She also appreciated the social element of the group, since she had few friends.
While Luna and Hermione often butted heads because Hermione’s practical, evidence-based beliefs contrasted so strongly with Luna’s willingness to believe in almost anything, the two worked together.
Hermione organized for Rita Skeeter to write a piece revealing Harry’s side of the story about the return of Lord Voldemort. Since the Daily Prophet would not publish the story due to the influence of the Ministry, Luna organized for the piece to appear in her father’s magazine, The Quibbler.
The magazine sold out quickly and every student at Hogwarts had read it, in part thanks to the Educational Decree that forbade copies of the story on school grounds.
Luna and the Department of Mysteries
When Harry had a vision that led him to be concerned for the life of his godfather Sirius Black and believe that he needed to get to the Department of Mysteries in the Ministry of Magic, Luna helped him. First, she stood guard with Ginny Weasley while Harry and Hermione used the fire in Umbridge’s office to contact Grimmauld Place.
She was then among the DA members who were able to overpower Umbridge’s Inquisitorial Squad. When she, Ron, Ginny, and Neville reunited with Harry and Hermione, Harry did not want her, Ginny, or Neville to accompany them to the Ministry, but the three insisted that it was their fight too.
It was Luna who suggested that they ride Thestrals to get to the Ministry. She rode side straddle as if it was something she had done before. She also helped those who could not see the Thestrals to mount them.
Luna fought bravely when they were ambushed by Death Eaters in the Department of Mysteries. She protected Ron when he had been hit by a spell that left him confused and used a reductor curse on a Death Eater who had seized Ginny by the ankle. Luna then guided the two of them to meet up with the others. She was one of the last students standing when the Order of the Phoenix reinforcements showed up.
When no one could console Harry about the death of Sirius at the end of the school year, Luna provided some relief by telling Harry about the death of her mother and her firm belief that she would see her again, one day.
In the summer, she went to Sweden with her father to catch Crumple-Horned Snorkacks. They used the money that the Daily Prophet paid to reprint Harry’s article.
Luna and the Slug Club
On the train returning to Hogwarts, while Ron and Hermione were on prefect duty, Harry sat with Neville and Luna. When another student, Romilda Vane, invited Harry to sit with them saying that he did not have to sit with “them”, Harry replied angrily that they were his friends.
Luna honestly noted that people expected Harry to have “cooler” friends than her and Neville. Harry’s response was that they were cool, and that they were among his most trustworthy friends.
With Professor Snape taking on the position of Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, DA meetings stopped.
Luna ran into Harry after comforting Hermione in the girl’s bathroom after Ron made a cruel joke at her expense. She noted that Ron was not always a very nice person. She also confessed to Harry how much she missed the companionship of the group.
Oh, it’s been alright. A bit lonely without the D.A. Ginny’s been nice, though. She stopped two boys in our Transfiguration class calling me “Loony” the other day –Luna Lovegood, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
This frank statement about her loneliness prompted Harry to invite Luna to attend Professor Slughorn’s “Slug Club” Christmas party with him as friends.
Luna wore an unusual set of spangled silver robes, but she was oblivious to the giggles that she received. Instead, she spoke confidently with other guests, including the visiting vampire Sanguini.
She also made Harry laugh when Professor Snape sneered at Harry’s ambition to become an Auror when she revealed her mistrust of the Aurors as a result of the Rotfang Conspiracy. Professor Trelawney was very interested in Luna’s thoughts on the conspiracy.
Luna the Quidditch Commentator
In her fifth year, Luna also temporarily replaced Zacharias Smith as Quidditch commentator, as Lee Jordan had graduated the previous year. While her commentary was amusing, she often forgot the player’s names and went off on tangents about things such as the shape of certain clouds.
Professor McGonagall had to step in and report the actual score of the game. While Ron Weasley said that he would be happy to hear Luna commentate all the games, she was not invited to return to the role.
Previous to this, she had worn a giant lion head hat to support Gryffindor on the pitch against Slytherin.
Luna and the Battle of the Astronomy Tower
At the end of the school year, Draco Malfoy was able to transport a number of Death Eaters into the school. This resulted in Draco disarming Professor Dumbledore on the roof of the Astronomy Tower, as he was already greatly weakened by an encounter with Lord Voldemort’s Horcruxes. Snape was then able to kill Dumbledore, as he had previously agreed with the headmaster.
Luna was one of the few members of the DA that saw the call on the DA enchanted coins to join the fight. Harry was not surprised by this, as he knew that Luna missed the companionship of the group and so would check her coin regularly.
She went with Hermione to call Professor Snape when the battle began, and then cared for Professor Flitwick when he was left stunned in Snape’s office. She and other members of the DA had drunk a tiny amount of felix felices potion, and so were able to survive the battle more or less unscathed.
Luna and the Resistance
While Harry did not return to school the following year, Luna did see him briefly before school started at the wedding of Fleur Delacour and Bill Weasley. She was able to instantly recognize Harry, who was disguised using Polyjuice Potion, from the expression on his face. She happily danced by herself, unconcerned about the attention it drew from onlookers.
As the Ministry of Magic and Hogwarts came under Death Eater control, all school-age wizards were required to attend Hogwarts, so Luna returned to school. She joined Neville Longbottom and Ginny Weasley in trying to make life difficult for the new Headmaster Snape and Death Eater teachers Amycus and Alecto Carrow. For example, they tried to steal Gryffindor’s Sword from the Headmaster’s office, and revived the DA.
However, during term her father had been printing articles in support of Harry Potter in The Quibbler. On the train home for Christmas, Luna was captured to use as leverage against her father.
While many people believed Luna to be in Azkaban, she was actually being held at Malfoy Manor. Perhaps even Death Eaters drew the line at sending children to the Dementors. She was held in the basement with valuable wandmaker Garrick Ollivander, and managed to help the old man maintain his spirits.
Later Harry, Ron, and Hermione, along with Dean Thomas and the Goblin Griphook, were also taken to the Manor. They were able to escape thanks to Aberforth Dumbledore hearing Harry’s plea for help through an enchanted two-way mirror and sending Dobby to rescue him.
While Dobby got all the hostages out alive and transported them to Shell Cottage, the home of Bill and Fleur, the house-elf died. When Harry was too emotional to speak as the buried the elf, Luna delivered the eulogy.
Luna stayed at Shell Cottage for most of the remainder of the war. Her father, who was also trying to get his daughter back, was probably very concerned about her whereabouts.
Luna and the Battle of Hogwarts
When Harry, Ron, and Hermione showed up at Hogwarts in May 1998, Neville Longbottom sent a signal to DA members to let them know that the time had come to fight. Luna returned to Hogwarts with Bill and Fleur, who were both members of the Order of the Phoenix.
It was Luna who suggested to Harry that the most important object associated with her house founder Rowena Ravenclaw was her lost diadem. She then took Harry to the Ravenclaw common room to see her bust wearing the diadem.
Students have to answer a riddle to enter the Ravenclaw tower. Luna was asked “What came first, the Phoenix of the flame?” Her responsew as that “A circle has no beginning.” Once inside, she stunned Alecto Carrow, the Death Eater teacher who was lying in wait.
Luna then joined the main battle. At one point, she was seen driving off a group of Dementors with Ernie Macmillan and Seamus Finnigan using Patronuses. Later in the battle, after Harry’s recovery, she fought Bellatrix Lestrange alongside Hermione and Ginny. But eventually Molly Weasley stepped in and dealt with the dark witch.
At the end of the battle, during the victory celebrations, she realized that Harry needed some time on his own. She distracted the room so that he could sneak out, claiming to see a Blibbering Humdinger.
Luna Later Life
After leaving school, Luna became a wizarding naturalist. She earned quit a bit of fame for discovering and classifying many new species of animals. She never did find a Crumple-Headed Snorkack and eventually had to admit that they did not exist.
Luna married fellow naturalist Rolf Scamander, the grandson of magizoologist Newt Scamander. She wore a wedding dress decorated with rainbows and spangles and a tiara of unicorn horns. The couple had two sons named Lorcan and Lysander.
Lovegood Personality Type & Traits
Luna has a serene disposition matched with a quirky personality and many eccentric beliefs. She grew up in a household which had many unconventional beliefs and were happy to adopt them. She tended to want to believe and would not dismiss ideas just because there was no supporting evidence.
The girl gave off an aura of distinct dottiness. Perhaps it was the fact that she had stuck her wand behind her left ear for safekeeping, or that she had chosen to wear a necklace of Butterbeer caps, or that she was reading a magazine upside down.Harry’s first impression of Luna, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Luna had few friends at school because of her unusual ways. But she was clearly a loyal friend and always stepped in to help when needed. She also had a knack for speaking uncomfortable truths, but in a “matter of fact” way that lacked any kind of judgement. She was very perceptive and could see truths that other, more self-involved, individuals were blind to.
Luna Lovegood Zodiac Sign & Birthday
Luna was born on 13 February 1981, which means that her zodiac sign is Aquarius. People born under this sign tend to be sharply intelligent, but also creative and independent. They march to the beat of their own drum and don’t care what anyone else things. That certainly sounds like Luna.
Why did Harry name his daughter after Luna?
Ginny suggested that the couple name their own daughter after Luna, who was a close friend of both. She pointed out that while Ron and Hermione were Harry’s best friends and complimented him perfectly, Luna in many ways changed Harry and his perspective on the world.
