About Madam Malkin

OccupationRobe Maker
Zodiac SignCancer (speculative)

While little is known about Madam Malkin on a personal level, she was an institution in Diagon Alley. The vast majority of students attending Hogwarts went to her to get their robes. She treated all of her customers with respect and never wanted any trouble.

Madam Malkin met Harry Potter in 1991 when Hagrid took him there to get his robes. She was already measuring Draco Malfoy up for some robes, and the two boys also met for the first time in her shop, though Draco did not realize that he was speaking to Harry Potter.

She clearly worked hard to keep on top of the latest wizarding fashions as in 1992 she went to Paris for the Which Witch? Fashion show. She worked alone, and so closed her shop for a short period during her trip.

While she was the standard for robes, she also had sales to encourage custom. She advertised a sale in the Daily Prophet in 1995.

In 1996, when Lord Voldemort’s return was out in the open, she had a difficult time trying to fit Draco Malfoy for new robes. The anxious Malfoy was already in a hurry to leave, and then Harry, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger entered the store. He called Hermione a mudblood, shocking Madam Malkin with his language.

As she became increasingly anxious, she accidentally pinched Draco with a needle, causing him to respond angrily. She looked to Draco’s mother Narcissa Malfoy, who was also present, to help. Narcissa was unsympathetic and said that she would rather get her robes from Twilfitt and Tattings, because they were more selective with their clients.

Madam Malkin recovered quickly after the Malfoys left, picking up all the robes that had fallen on the floor and cleaning them with a wave of her wand. She fitted the three for robes without further incident but seemed relieved when they also left the shop.

She survived the Second Wizarding War and was still in business in 2008.
