How to Make A Potion of Strength in Minecraft 1.20 (2023)

Access to the correct Potion can often mean the difference between life and death in your survival journey. Minecraft has many brewable Potions, and remembering each recipe can be pretty complicated!

Don’t worry though; that’s where we come in. Today, we’ll cover everything you need to know about creating a Potion of Strength (and all its variants) in Minecraft 1.20.

How to Make a Potion of Strength in Minecraft 1.20?

Combining an Awkward Potion with Blaze Powder on a Brewing Stand creates a Potion of Strength in Minecraft 1.20. This can be converted into an Extended Potion of Strength using Redstone Dust. It can also be converted into an Enhanced Strength Potion by adding Glowstone Dust instead.

As mentioned, you’ll need a Blaze Powder and Awkward Potion as the base-level ingredients to create a Potion of Strength. If you plan to make its extended or enhanced variants, you’ll also need access to Redstone Dust and Glowstone Dust, respectively. As with all other Potions, the Potion of Strength can also be converted to a ‘Splash’ and ‘Lingering’ variant, which requires access to additional resources.

The table below summarizes important information about brewing a Potion of Strength in Minecraft 1.20:

NamePotion of Strength

This guide assumes that you’ve gathered the required resources and are ready to move on to brewing the potion. If you haven’t collected these ingredients yet, feel free to refer to the end of the guide for tips on how to get your hands on the crafting ingredients!

The Brewing Process

Crafting Pattern for an ordinary Potion of Strength

After obtaining the materials mentioned above, follow these steps to brew your Potion of Strength!

  • Interact with the Brewing Stand to open up its menu.
  • Place some Blaze Powder in the left-most slot to charge up the stand.
  • Add another Blaze Powder in the top-most slot at the right side of the Brewing Menu.
  • Place an Awkward Potion in any of the three slots on the right side of the Brewing Menu. (You may place them in all 3 slots as well)
  • Wait for the Brewing process to complete, and collect the resulting Potion of Strength!

How to Make a Splash Potion of Strength in Minecraft 1.20?

Crafting Pattern for a Splash Potion of Strength

Suppose you want to transfer the Strength buff to other mobs instead of consuming it yourself. In that case, you’ll have to convert the ordinary potion you made into its ‘Splash’ variant. For this, you’ll need access to some Gunpowder.

Once you have that, follow the steps below to create a Splash Potion of Strength!

  • Create an ordinary Potion of Strength (refer to the steps mentioned above).
  • Add a Gunpowder to the top-most slot at the right side of the Brewing Menu.
  • Wait for the Brewing process to complete, and collect the resulting Splash Potion of Strength!

How to Make a Lingering Potion of Strength in Minecraft 1.20?

Crafting Pattern for a Lingering Potion of Strength

If you want to take things further than the ‘Splash” variant, you can also create a Lingering Potion of Strength! This requires using ‘Dragon’s Breath’ as an ingredient.

Once you have the required materials, follow these steps to create the Lingering version of the potion:

  • Create a Splash Potion of Strength (refer to the steps mentioned above).
  • Insert a Dragon’s Breath in the top-most slot at the right side of the Brewing Menu.
  • Wait for the Brewing process to complete, and collect the resulting Lingering Potion of Strength!

How to Make an Extended Potion of Strength in Minecraft 1.20?

Crafting Pattern for an Extended Potion of Strength

The base potion of Strength increases your attack damage by 3 (1.5 hearts) for 1 minute and 30 seconds. Although this is a small time window, the effect can be increased to 8 whole minutes!

To convert the base potion into an Extended Potion of Strength, you’ll need access to some Redstone Dust. Once you have that, follow these steps to create the extended potion:

  • Create an ordinary or Splash Potion of Strength (refer to the steps mentioned above).
  • Insert Redstone Dust to the top-most slot at the right side of the Brewing Menu.
  • Wait for the Brewing process to complete, and collect the resulting Extended Potion of Strength!

How to Make an Enhanced Potion of Strength in Minecraft 1.20?

Crafting Pattern for an Enhanced Potion of Strength

If you want effectiveness instead of longevity, you may convert your base potion into an Enhanced Potion of Strength instead. Doing so effectively doubles the buff received from the base potion. Thus, consuming the enhanced potion will provide you with a ‘Strength II’ buff – increasing your attack damage by 6 (3 Hearts) instead.

To convert the base potion into an Enhanced Potion of Strength, you’ll need access to Glowstone Dust. Once you have that, follow these steps to create the enhanced potion:

  • Create an ordinary or Splash Potion of Strength (refer to the steps mentioned above).
  • Insert Glowstone Dust to the top-most slot at the right side of the Brewing Menu.
  • Wait for the Brewing process to complete, and collect the resulting Enhanced Potion of Strength!

That covers everything you need to know about creating a Potion of Strength and its variants in Minecraft 1.20. However, if you’re having trouble collecting the ingredients required to produce this potion, feel free to refer to the guide below!

Collecting the Ingredients for a Potion of Strength

After gaining access to a Brewing Stand, you’ll need some additional ingredients to create a Potion of Strength. To make the base variant, you require another Blaze Powder and one Awkward Potion (at the minimum). Here’s how you can quickly obtain both of these ingredients!

Blaze Powder

Crafting Pattern for Blaze Powder

The only method of obtaining Blaze Powder is by converting Blaze Rods. Each Blaze Rod placed on a Crafting Table can be converted to 2x Blaze Powder.

Thus, to obtain Blaze Powder, you’ll have to collect Blaze Rods. The good news is that Blaze Rods only have a singular source, making the process less hectic. The bad news is that the ‘source’ can be pretty tough to kill!

Blaze Rods are exclusively dropped by the ‘Blaze’ mob found in the Nether world. Each Blaze you kill has a 50% chance to drop a Blaze Rod. Be careful; Blaze can be pretty tough to slay and will pose a massive challenge if you’re not well-prepared.

Note: Blaze mobs will only drop the rod if slain by yourself or a tamed Wolf. If killed by any other source, the mob will NOT drop any Blaze Rods.

Awkward Potion

Crafting Pattern for an Awkward Potion

Creating an Awkward Potion is pretty straightforward – all you need to do is combine Nether Wart with a Water Bottle on a Brewing Stand.

Nether Wart is primarily obtained through harvesting Nether Wart Crops. These are naturally found in two central locations – Nether Fortresses and Bastion Remnants. For the former, they commonly generate near stairwells located in small Soul Sand Gardens.

For the latter, Nether Wart can commonly be spotted growing in the central courtyard areas of Bastion Remnants (with housing units). One way or another, you’ll have to make a trip to the Nether world!

The second and more accessible ingredient to obtain for an Awkward Potion is a Water Bottle. Interacting with any source of water while having a Glass Bottle in hand fills it up with water – giving you a Water Bottle. Glass Bottles can be crafted using 3 blocks of Glass.

The crafting pattern is such that you’ll have to place one Glass each in the left and right spots of the center row of the Crafting Grid. Then, place the last Glass block in the middle of the bottom row. The result should be 3x Glass Bottles!
