Mundungus Fletcher was a British wizard notorious for being involved in petty crime. Nevertheless, he was a member of the Order of the Phoenix out of loyalty to Dumbledore, who had once saved him from serious trouble. However, he was not as self-sacrificing as some other members.

About Mundungus Fletcher

Blood StatusHalf-Blood
OccupationThief Order of the Phoenix
HouseSlytherin (assumed)
Zodiac SignSagittarius (speculative)

A British wizard, born sometime before 1962, Mundungus probably attended Hogwarts like his peers. He may well have been in Slytherin house, as he was intelligent, cunning, and always put his own interests first.

He seems to have quickly become involved in petty crime, such as theft and illegal training. While he was still a relatively young man he seems to have gotten into some serious trouble, and Albus Dumbledore helped him out of a tight spot.

This made Mundungus extremely loyal to Dumbledore, and when the First Wizarding War began, he joined Dumbledore’s Order of the Phoenix. Most of the other members did not trust Mundungus, in fact, Aberforth Dumbledore even banned him from his pub the Hog’s Head in Hogsmeade. But Albus trusted that he could always trust Mundungus to act in his own best interest, which meant supporting the Order.

After the first fall of Lord Voldemort, Mundungus continued with his criminal activities. Arthur Weasley had to investigate him more than once in his role in the Department for the Misuses of Muggle Artefacts. Mundungus unsuccessfully tried to hex him during one raid.

Mundungus attended the Quidditch World Cup in 1994 and slept under a cloak propped up on sticks. But after the Death Eater riot, he tried to claim damages for a 12-bedroom tent with a jacuzzi.

Mundungus Fletcher and the Return of the Dark Lord

When Lord Voldemort was able to return to his body in June 1995, Mundungus was among the original members of the Order of the Phoenix that was recalled.

Mundungus was put on the detail assigned to watch Harry Potter while he was at the Dursleys. But on the night of 2 August 1995, when two Dementors attacked Harry and Dudley, Mundungus abandoned his post before the incident for a business opportunity. Harry was forced to fight the Dementors himself.

As a member of the Order of the Phoenix, Mundungus was frequently at Grimmauld Place, despite objections from Molly Weasley. She was even less impressed when he told Fred and George Weasley a story about stealing toads from someone and selling his own toads back to them.

On another occasion, he tried to bring some stolen cauldrons to Headquarters to hide, and he also procured a number of controlled ingredients for Fred and George Weasley for their magic joke shop. However, he also saved Ron from a set of purple cloaks that were attempting to strangle him while they were cleaning the house.

When Harry returned to school, Mundungus was among the team at Hogsmeade, to be close to the school. He followed Harry, Ron, and Hermione into the Hog’s Head and heard about the formation of the DA, which he reported back to Dumbledore. Since he was banned from the pub, he was disguised as a witch.

Mundungus also joined the Weasley family for Christmas at Grimmauld Place. He provided the tree, which was stolen, and used a stolen muggle car to arrive, since the London Underground does not run on Christmas Day.

Mundungus the Thief

After the death of Sirius Black, Mundungus took advantage of the situation and stole many valuable goods from the Black family home to sell. While his logic was that Sirius hated that house and wouldn’t mind, Harry was very upset about this dishonouring of his godfather’s memory.

Harry caught Mundungus red-handed selling Black family silver in Hogsmeade. He also sold half of a two-way mirror that Harry and Sirius shared to Aberforth dumbledore at this time. When confronted by Harry, Mundungus disapparated and went into hiding for a period of time.

It was later reported that he was arrested and sent to Azkaban for impersonating an Inferius. But he seems to have escaped during the mass breakout in 1997.

Mundungus and the Battle of the Seven Potters

After his escape, Mundungus returned to the Order and was forced to help with the transfer of Harry Potter from the Dursleys home, which would no longer be safe, to the Weasley. He was nominated to take Polyjuice Potion and be one of the six members to impersonate Harry. He would leave with Mad-Eye Moody, who wanted to keep an eye on him.

Mundungus actually suggested to the Order the idea of the seven Potters. Unbeknownst to him, Severus Snape had given him the idea using a Confundus Charm. But Mundungus himself had never wanted to participate.

Shortly after they left the house, Death Eaters descended on the group and Mundungus disapparated in fear. This left Mad-Eye Moody alone, and he was killed by Lord Voldemort who had been aiming a Killing Curse at Mundungus.

Many of the Order suspected that it was Mundungus who let the plan slip to the Death Eaters, though others pointed out that he did not mention the seven Harrys, which would seem strange. Of course, we now know that it was Snape who gave Lord Voldemort the correct details but left out important information to maintain his position with the Death Eaters and protect Harry.

Mundungus and the Horcruxes

Mundungus Fletcher aprehended by Kreacher

During the hunt for the Horcruxes, Harry, Ron, and Hermione spent some time at Grimmauld Place. It was there that they realized that the R.A.B. who had stolen the locket Horcrux was Sirius’ brother Regulus.

They also realized that they had already seen the locket at Grimmauld Place while cleaning and had tried to throw it out. Their only hope was that the house-elf Kreacher, who had saved many family heirlooms, had also taken this piece.

When they called Kreacher to learn the whereabouts of the locket, they learned that Mundungus Fletcher had stolen it in the period after Sirius death.

Harry sent Kreacher to track down Mundungus and bring him back to Grimmauld Place. The house-elf managed to track him down after a few days and he was persuaded to tell the trio what had happened to the locket. He shared that he had been forced to give it to Dolores Umbridge under extortion.

This information led the trio to infiltrate the Ministry of Magic and retrieve the locket from Umbridge.

It is not known whether Mundungus joined the rest of the Order of the Phoenix at the Battle of Hogwarts. But he did survive the wizarding war and return to his career as a petty criminal.

Mundungus Fletcher Personality Type & Traits

Mundungus Fletcher is certainly intelligent and cunning. This is how he was able to pass under the noses of people looking for him, and why he was so valuable to the Order of the Phoenix. But he does not seem to have had a strong moral core and always put his own advantage first.

He was happy to steal from others for his own financial gain, and he wasn’t worried about abandoning his post protecting Harry when a good deal was on the table. He also prioritized his own life over the mission of successfully transferring Harry to the Burrow. This cost Mad-Eye Moody his life.

But this all makes Mundungus a selfish person rather than a bad person. There were other occasions where he showed great bravery and loyalty. But he never put anyone or anything ahead of his own interests.

Mundungus Fletcher Zodiac Sign & Birthday

We do not know when Mundungus Fletcher was born, but he must have been born before 1962 to have been older enough to be a member of the original Order of the Phoenix. Some fans suspect that his zodiac sign is Sagittarius. People born under this sign are adventurous.

Sagittarians can also have a tendency to put themselves first and not always consider what this might mean for other people.

Did Mundungus Fletcher Betray the Order of the Phoenix?

While some members of the Order of the Phoenix suspected that it was Mundungus who tipped off the Death Eaters about their plans to move Harry, it was not him. Snape told Lord Voldemort the date of the move to maintain the Dark Lord’s trust. But he withheld vital information to ensure that Voldemort would not be successful in his attack.

Snape was part of the team that tried to apprehend Harry. He was the one who blasted off George Weasley’s ear. But this was to get in front of a Killing Curse that another Death Eater was aiming at the counterfeit Harry.

But while Mundungus never explicitly betrayed the order, he often let them down. He anandoned his post at Privett Drive, allowing two Dementors to attack Harry. He also fled from the Battle of the Seven Potters, resulting in the death of Alastor Moody.
