Myrtle Warren Biography

Myrtle Warren was born in 1928/9 into a Muggle family only to discover that she was a witch. She went on to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the same year as Tom Riddle (Lord Voldemort). She was a member of Ravenclaw.

Myrtle struggled to make friends at school and was often teased and bullied, especially for her thick glasses and bad acne. She would often hide in the girls’ bathroom to cry.

In 1943, on one such occasion, she heard someone enter the bathroom and then a male voice speaking in a strange language. She exited her cubicle to tell the boy to use the boys’ bathrooms, but instead, she came face to face with Slytherin’s Monster and was killed.

It was Tom Riddle controlling the beast, and Myrtle was likely his first ever murder. He used her murder to make his first Horcrux, the diary that would later be passed to Ginny Weasley.

Her body went undiscovered for a day. It was only when Olive Horby, the girl who had been teasing Myrtle, went to find her that the body was discovered. The girl did not soon forget the terrible image.

Becoming Moaning Myrtle

While Myrtle’s body was removed from Hogwarts, she returned to school as a ghost so that she could torment all the people who had bullied her. She even attended the wedding of Olive Horby’s brother uninvited and made a huge scene.

In response, Olive went to the Ministry for Magic, who restrained the ghost to Hogwarts. At the school, Myrtle preferred to stay in her bathroom. As a result, most students avoided it. But this did mean that it was the ideal location for covert activities.

But Myrtle’s bathroom came into focus again when the Chamber of Secrets was reopened in 1992. This happened when Tom Riddle’s diary Horcrux possessed Ginny Weasley.

Ginny would often enter the bathroom, where Myrtle could observe her. However, she got upset and flooded the bathroom when Ginny tried to flush the diary down the toilet in her stall.

Later, Harry, Hermione, and Ron would use the bathroom as a discreet location to brew Polyjuice Potion to help them in their investigation of the Chamber.

Later, when Harry learned that the student who died last time the Chamber had been opened died in a bathroom, he realized that it must be Myrtle. He asked her to tell him her story, and Myrtle obliged, flattered by the attention.

From here, Harry and Ron were able to descend into the Chamber of Secrets, save Ginny, who had been lured down there by the diary, kill the monster, and destroy the diary.

Moaning Myrtle’s Antics

While Myrtle spent most of her time in her bathroom, she did get out occasionally. For example, she went to the Prefect’s bathrooms to watch Cedric Diggory and Harry Potter take a bath with their Triwizard Tournament eggs.

While this embarrassed Harry, it also helped him as she was able to tell Harry what Cedric had done with his egg to hear its song.

After these events, Myrtle seemed to gain an interest in the tournament. She appeared in the Great Lake while Harry was looking for the hostages and pointed him in the direction of the Merpeople village.

Later, in 1996, when Draco was struggling to repair the Vanishing Cabinet in the Room of Requirement to let Death Eaters into the school, he often spent time in Myrtle’s bathroom as a quiet place. He confided in Myrtle that he was scared of what would happen if he could not complete the task, and the ghost had great empathy for him.

Myrtle promised to keep Draco’s secrets and would not tell Ron who she spoke to in the bathroom. Eventually, Harry would confront Draco there and badly injure him with the Sectumsempra spell.

While Myrtle seemed to enjoy the dangerous duel, she screamed and shouted when Draco fell. She was eventually told to leave the bathroom by Severus Snape so that he could deal with Draco and Harry.

Moaning Myrtle Alternative Timeline

In one of the alternative timelines created by Albus Potter and Scorpius Malfoy, in 2020 the two boys explained to Myrtle their plans to save Cedric Diggory in the past.

She explained to them how they could use the pipes in her bathroom to reach the Great Lake. She also said that she was quite partial to Potters and Malfoys, implying that was why she helped them.

When Harry Potter, Draco Malfoy, Professor McGonagall, and Ginny Weasley showed up soon after looking for the boys, Myrtle was able to explain the boys’ plan to the group.

Myrtle Warren Personality Type & Traits

Myrtle struggled in life because she was constantly bullied, but her personality in her afterlife may explain why. She seems to have been very sensitive and taken every comment in the worst possible way. At the same time, she enjoyed seeing other people uncomfortable and would often make inappropriate statements.
