Neville Longbottom is a pure-blood British wizard who attended Hogwarts in the same year as Harry Potter. He and Harry share their birthdays. The prophecy about the one who would defeat Lord Voldemort could have been about Neville. But the Dark Lord chose Harry, and therefore made the prophecy about him.

Neville was also in Gryffindor House and was slow to develop. But he was one of the founding members of Dumbledore’s Army. When the school fell under Death Eater control and Harry, Ron, and Hermione were off chasing Horcruxes, it was Neville who led resistance in the school through a reformed Dumbledore’s Army.

Neville played a decisive role in the Battle of Hogwarts, killing the snake Horcrux Nagini with Gryffindor’s sword.

Neville Longbottom Early Life

Neville Longbottom was born on 30 July 1980 to Frank and Alice Longbottom, a well-known pair of Aurors. At the time they were active in the fight against Lord Voldemort in the First Wizarding War.

Just moments after he was born, Neville was able to use magic to adjust his blankets to be more comfortable. But no one saw this early sign of magical abilities.

When Sybill Trelawney revealed a prophecy about Lord Voldemort and a boy born at the end of the summer to a couple who had defied Lord Voldemort, she could have been referring to Harry Potter or Neville Longbottom. But when the Dark Lord chose to assume that the boy was Harry, he influenced fate and made Harry the subject of the prophecy.

Nevertheless, Neville was not to escape unscathed. Shortly after the fall of Lord Voldemort following his failed attempt to kill Harry, some of his most loyal Death Eaters attacked the Longbottoms. They believed that they knew where the Dark Lord had gone. Bellatrix Lestrange, brother Rodolphus and Rabastan Lestrange, and Barty Crouch Jnr used the Cruciatus Curse on the pair ruthlessly.

While the Death Eaters were captured and sent to Azkaban, there was irreparable damage done to the minds of the two Longbottoms; they could no longer recognize their own son. Both would spend the rest of their lives in St Mungo’s Hospital. Neville was raised by his grandmother Augusta Longbottom. Neville also witnessed the death of his grandfather early in his young life.

Life with his Grandmother

Neville’s grandmother was stern, and when she did not immediately see magical ability in Neville, she often compared him negatively to his father, her beloved son. This, combined with the fact that his grandmother insisted Neville use his father’s old wand, probably stunted Neville’s magical development, and certainly gave his confidence a severe knock.

At one point, some of Neville’s relatives feared that he might be a squib. This was disproved by his great-uncle Algie, who let Neville drop from a window. The boy bounced, proving his magical ability.

Neville Arrives at Hogwarts

Neville started attending Hogwarts in 1991 and arrived on the train like many of the other students. He quickly earned a reputation for being a bit hopeless as he lost his toad Trevor several times on the train, though it was found and returned to him by Hagrid.

Neville was nervous about being placed in Gryffindor and not living up to the reputation of his parents. He asked the Sorting Hat to put him in Hufflepuff. But the Sorting Hat believed that Neville belonged in Gryffindor and placed him there. He wanted to get out of the spotlight of the sorting so quickly that he ran off with the hat still on his head and had to return the hat.

Neville struggled on several occasions in his first year. He melted Seamus Finnigan’s cauldron with a disastrous potion, and later lost control of his broom in his first flying lesson, falling from a great height and breaking his wrist.

While Neville was friendly with Harry and Ron, some of his fellow Gryffindors, he remained on the outside. But one night he followed the pair and Hermione to a duel that Draco Malfoy had scheduled with Harry in order to get him in trouble for being out of bed at night. They all received detention, and Neville discovered the three-headed dog guarding the Philosopher’s Stone, which he showed to Harry.

Standing up to Malfoy

Draco Malfoy bullied Neville. On one occasion not long before Christmas, he cast a leg-locker curse on him, and Neville had to bunny-hop back to Gryffindor Tower for help. Nevertheless, Neville refused to report Draco because he did not want any more trouble.

Harry reassured Neville that he was worth twelve Malfoys and gave him a chocolate frog to cheer him up. The card in the packet happened to be Nicolas Flamel. This helped Harry, Ron, and Hermione identify the wizard they had been seeking.

However, when Neville returned to school after Christmas, he did stand up for himself. When Malfoy started insulting the Gryffindor Quidditch team and Neville, Neville challenged him. He ended up taking on Crabbe and Goyle single-handedly while Ron dealt with Malfoy. He ended up in the hospital wing, but it was worth it.

When Harry and Hermione were arranging to meet Charlie Weasley on top of the Astronomy Tower to smuggle Hagrid’s dragon out of school, Neville realized that Draco Malfoy had a plan to get them caught. He snuck out of bed behind the pair to warn them. But in the end, all four, including Draco Malfoy, got detention.

They served their detention with Hagrid in the Forbidden Forest, searching for an injured unicorn. Neville was originally paired with Draco and Fang, but when Draco deliberately scared Neville, he swapped places with Harry and went with Hagrid and Hermione.

Standing up to his Friends

The night that Quirinus Quirrell, working for Lord Voldemort, tried to steal the Philosopher’s Stone, Neville caught Harry, Ron, and Hermione sneaking out of bed again. He tried to stop them, as they had all lost points for Gryffindor the last time they had been caught. While he tried to block the portrait hole, Hermione apologetically hit him with a full body-bind curse.

You can’t go out, you’ll be caught again. Gryffindor will be in even more trouble… I won’t let you do it. I’ll – I’ll fight you!

Neville confronting his friends, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

At the end of the year, Harry, Ron, and Hermione earned points for Gryffindor for saving the Philosopher’s Stone. But, at this point, they were tied with Slytherin in the House Cup. What tipped the scales in favor of Gryffindor was the ten points that he earned for standing up to his friends, letting them to win.

Neville and the Chamber of Secrets

In his second year, Neville was one of the students who was impressed by Harry and Ron flying an enchanted car to school. But when Ron received a Howler from his mother the following day, Neville warned him to open it. He confessed that he had delayed opening one from his grandmother once and that it just made things worse.

When Slytherin’s monster started attacking students, Neville was worried due to his poor magical abilities. He started using a green onion, purple crystal, and rotting newt tail as protection, even though the others pointed out that he was pure blood.

Like many students, Neville attended Gilderoy Lockhart‘s duelling club. He was partnered with Justin Finch-Fletchley to practice spell blocking. When Lockhart suggested that the pair demonstrate, Snape stepped in pointing out that Neville has problems with even the simplest spells. He nominated Harry and Draco instead.

Neville and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Returning to Hogwarts for his third year, Neville was in a train compartment with Harry, Hermione, Ron, Ginny, and Professor Lupin when the Dementors entered the train. Just like everyone else, he was negatively affected by their presence. He appreciated the reassurance and chocolate provided by Professor Lupin.

The students started Divination this year. In his first class, Professor Trelawney predicted that he would break his cup, which he duly did. He also started Care of Magical Creatures this year. Neville bowed to the Hippogriff, but always backed up and could not get the animal to return the bow.

He fared no better in Potions where he managed to produce a Shrinking Solution that was orange instead of green. When Snape threatened to feed the potion to his toad Trevor, Hermione secretly helped him for the rest of the class. Neville was able to produce a green potion that reduced Trevor from a toad to a tadpole. After Snape returned Trevor to his normal size, he took five points from Hermione for helping Neville.

Neville faces the Boggart

Neville did much better in Defence Against the Dark Arts with the new Professor Lupin. The Professor organized a boggart, and Neville was the first to face it. When Neville admitted that Professor Snape was what scared him most, Lupin suggest that he imagine Snape in his grandmother’s clothes. In this way, Neville was successfully able to deal with the boggart using the Ridiculus spell.

When the Fat Lady fled Gryffindor Tower after seeing Sirius Black, Sir Cadogan took over as the portrait keeper of the door. He changed the password so often that Neville struggled to remember them, so he wrote them down. Cruckshanks, who had met Sirius Black in his Animagus form, stole the list for Sirius so that he could enter the tower and get to Peter Pettigrew, who was hiding as Ron’s rat Scabbers.

After Sirius was caught in the bedroom of the third-year Gryffindor boys, Professor McGonagall forbade him from future Hogsmeade visits, gave him detention, and forbade anyone from giving him the new password. He had to sit and wait for someone else to let him pass.

But this punishment was not as bad as the Howler that he received from his grandmother claiming that he brought shame on their family.

Neville and Barty Crouch Jnr

Unlike Harry, Ron, and Hermione, Neville had not attended the Quidditch World Cup in the summer of 1994. He listened jealously as the others recounted what happened on the train.

When he arrived at school, he discovered with the other students that the Triwizard Tournament would take place at Hogwarts, and the Alastor Moody had arrived as the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. No one knew that Moody was actually the Death Eater Barty Crouch Jnr in disguise. He had a plot to see Harry Potter enter the Triwizard Tournament and win, in order to be able to transport the boy to Lord Voldemort.

The Unforgivable Curses

Moody decided to demonstrate the three Unforgivable Curse to his students to prepare them for the real world. While seeing all three curses was traumatic for all the students, Neville was particularly upset when he saw Moody demonstrate the Cruciatus Curse on a spider. Of course, this was the spell that had been used on his parents.

When Hermione noticed the effect that this was having on Neville, she demanded that he stop. Moody subsequently invited Neville to his office for a cup of tea, and presumably to have a private word about his parents. Also, having heard of Neville’s aptitude for Herbology from Professor Sprout, he also gave Neville the book Magical Water Plants of the Mediterranean. His hope was that Neville would share information about Gillyweed with Harry to help him on the second task, though this did not happen.

In another Defence Against the Dark Arts class, Moody put students under the Imperius Curse to see if they could throw it off. Neville managed to perform astonishing gymnastics that he would never have been able to perform otherwise.

While Harry and Ron were struggling to find the courage to ask a girl to go to the Yule Ball with them, Neville asked Hermione as a friend. She refused politely because she had already agreed to go with Viktor Krum. He then asked Ginny Weasley, who gladly accepted since, as a third year, she could only attend if invited by an older student. They had a good time, but Neville did stand on her toes often while dancing.

Neville and the First Dumbledore’s Army

Neville sat with Harry again on the train to Hogwarts for their fifth year, as well as Ginny and Luna Lovegood. As he was showing off his new Mimbulus Mimbletonia plant that he had received for his birthday, it spewed some puss onto Harry, just in time for Cho Chang to come looking for him in the carriage.

At school, for once Neville was the one who knew the password and could help him enter the common room. On the first night, Seamus Finnigan had an argument with Harry saying that he and his mother believed the Daily Prophet and that Harry was wrong about Voldemort. Neville spoke up on Harry’s behalf saying that he and his grandmother believed Harry, and had canceled their subscription to the Daily Prophet for its treatment of Harry and Dumbledore.

When Harry, Hermione, and Ron started to organize Dumbledore’s Army, to learn defense against the dark arts from Harry while Umbridge had all but banned the subject at Hogwarts, Neville was one of the first to join the group.

Neville did better than expected in the sessions, even managing to disarm Harry while practicing disarming spells. By the Christmas break, he had improved beyond all recognition.

The Secret of Neville’s Parents

Over the Christmas break, Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Ginny finally learned what had happened to Neville’s parents, who they assumed were dead since he lived with his grandmother. Harry had learned the truth from Dumbledore in the previous year. But had promised not to share the secret and to let Neville tell it in his own time.

They were visiting Mr Weasley at St Mungo’s hospital after he was attacked by Nagini in the Ministry of Magic, an attack that Harry saw through Lord Voldemort’s mind. They were wandering the hospital and ran into Gilderoy Lockhart, their old teacher. He had lost his memory and was in long-term care at St Mungo’s. As they found themselves entering his ward, they ran into Neville and his grandmother.

They saw Neville visiting with his mother, who seemed very confused, and kept giving him presents of Dribbles Blowing Bubble Gum wrappers. While his grandmother commented that she was giving him “another one” and suggested he throw it out. Harry noticed that Neville kept the wrapper.

Neville’s grandmother was surprised to learn that Harry and the others did not know about Neville’s parents. She admonished Neville for not telling them saying that he should not be ashamed and that his parents had been great wizards. Neville commented that he was not ashamed, but did not say why he chose to keep their condition secret.

Fighting Death Eaters

Shortly after they returned to school it was announced that ten Death Eaters had escaped from Azkaban, including the three Lestranges who had tortured Neville’s parents. Harry noticed that this brought a major change in Neville and that he became very determined. He was now the fastest to pick up new spells, behind Hermione of course.

Neville was among the members of Dumbledore’s army that were captured by the Inquisitorial Squad while Harry and Hermione were breaking into Professor Umbridge’s office to use her fire to speak to Grimmauld Place. While Harry and Hermione led Umbridge into the hidden forest, Neville, with Ron, Ginny, and Luna, overpowered the Inquisitorial Squad and escaped.

When the group reunited, Harry made it clear that he was going to the Ministry of Magic to save Sirius, whom Lord Voldemort had tricked him into believing was in trouble there. Harry did not want to take Neville, Ginny, and Luna with them, but the trio insisted. What was the point of the DA if not to fight Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters?

We were all in the DA together. It was all supposed to be about fighting You-Know-Who, wasn’t it? And this is the first chance we’ve had to do something real – or was that all just a game or something?

Neville and the Department of Mysteries

They flew on Thestrals to the Ministry of Magic. Neville was one of the group who could see the animals since he had seen death. When they arrived, they soon realized that it was a trap as they were ambushed by 12 Death Eaters. They wanted Harry to retrieve the prophecy about him and Lord Voldemort. You can only retrieve a prophecy from the Department of Mysteries if it is about you.

In the battle that ensued, Neville was with Harry and Hermione. They ran into the Time Room where Neville disarmed Rabastan Lestrange, though he accidentally disarmed Harry at the same time. In an attempt to fix his mistake, he went to stun Lestrange. Instead, he hit a rack of time-turners, destroying the Ministry’s entire supply. As they escaped the room, all three were hit by Impediment Jinxes cast by Antonin Dolohov and Jugson.

As the fight ensued, Hermione was incapacitated by a silent curse cast by Dolohov. The Death Eater also broke Neville’s nose and wand. While Harry urged him to leave with Hermione, he continued on, carrying their friend while they searched for the others.

When several Death Eaters cornered Harry alone in the Death Chamber, Neville stormed in with Hermione’s wand, but was unable to pronounce spells correctly because of his broken nose. Neville was seized and Bellatrix Lestrange began to torture him with the Cruciatus Curse, just as she had his parents. She said she would stop if Harry handed over the Prophecy, but Neville urged him not to.

The Destruction of the Prophecy

Finally, the members of the Order of the Phoenix arrived to assist, receiving a cryptic message that Harry had passed to Snape in front of Professor Umbridge. Harry tried to get out with Neville, but was trapped by McNair. Again, Neville refused to run and leave Harry, and jabbed the Death Eater in the eye with Hermione’s wand.

Next Neville was incapacitated by a Dancing Feet Spell. As the battle ensued and Harry was trying to pull Neville to safety, his uncontrollable legs accidentally kicked the prophecy, smashing it. There was so much noise at this time, that no one could hear the prophecy.

The battle ended after the appearance of both Albus Dumbledore and Lord Voldemort. The Death Eaters were arrested. Voldemort was exposed to the wizarding world and fled. Neville returned to Hogwarts with the others. His nose was fixed by Madam Pomfrey.

Neville apologized to Harry profusely for smashing the prophecy. But Albus Dumbledore was able to share its contents with Harry, since he was the one who had received it from Sybill Trelawney. This is when Dumbledore also revealed that the prophecy could have been about Neville if Voldemort had acted differently.

Neville Longbottom Growing Up

Neville’s grandmother was extremely proud of her grandson’s actions in the Ministry of Magic. She bought him a new wand to replace the one that was destroyed. The 13-inch cherry wood and unicorn hair was a much better fit for Neville than his father’s wand. This, combined with his confidence boost from the battle, gave Neville a new level of confidence.

As he started his sixth year, Neville expressed disappointment that Dumbledore’s Army meetings would not continue. He appreciated the companionship and learned more with Harry than he had with any of the Defence Against the Dark Arts professors.

On the train to Hogwarts, Neville and Harry were both invited to join Professor Horace Slughorn in his compartment. The returning professor was beginning to collect students with interesting or prestigious bloodlines. He had high expectations of Neville thanks to his parents, both of whom had been his students.

However, Slughorn seemed unimpressed when he finally met Neville. Slughorn did not continue to include Neville in his “Slug Club” activities.

Neville had received an Outstanding in Herbology, Exceeds Expectations in Charms and Defence Against the Dark Arts, Acceptable in Transfiguration, and had failed Potion. There was no question of him continuing Potions, even under Professor Slughorn. Professor McGonagall told him that he did not have the marks to continue with Transfiguration.

When Neville seemed disappointed, McGonagall asked him why he wanted to do Transfiguration. He admitted that it was his grandmother’s wish. She did not want him to do Charms as it was a “light” subject. McGonagall commented that she should be proud of the grandson that she had, rather than the imaginary one that she desired. She also said that he could take Charms, and revealed that his grandmother had actually failed Charms.

Battle of the Astronomy Tower

The school year seemed relatively quiet for Neville, as he applied himself to his studies. But he was one of the few members of Dumbledore’s Army that continued to monitor his DA communication coin. As such, he saw the call to action that Harry sent out before setting off with Dumbledore to retrieve a Horcrux.

Neville stood guard outside the Room of Requirement with Ron and Ginny, waiting for Draco Malfoy to come out. Harry suspected that he was up to no good as he had heard excited whooping from Malfoy in the room. But Malfoy and his Death Eater allies were able to evade the three by using Peruvian Instant Darkness Powder.

During the fight, Neville suffered an injury that saw him in the Hospital Wing for some time. But he still attended Dumbledore’s funeral, where Luna helped him into his seat.

Neville and the New DA

While Harry, Ron, and Hermione did not return to Hogwarts for their seventh year as they were hunting Horcruxes, Neville did. He had no choice. The Ministry for Magic and Hogwarts were now in the control of the Death Eaters, and they mandated that all school-age wizards must attend Hogwarts.

Professor Snape was now Headmaster. While he was ostensibly a Death Eater, he was in fact looking out for the well-being of the students. But he was joined at the school by brother and sister Alecto and Amycus Carrow. The former taught anti-muggle propaganda in the now compulsory Muggle Studies, and the latter taught Dark Arts. They were also responsible for discipline, which often amounted to torture.

Neville revived Dumbledore’s Army, with the help of Ginny Weasley, to organize resistance to Snape and the Carrows. They would write “Dumbledore’s Army, still recruiting” on school walls. Neville, Ginny, and Luna were caught trying to steal Gryffindor’s sword from the headmaster’s office. Fortunately, Snape gave them detention by sending them to the Forbidden Forest with Hagrid, and not sending them to the Carrows. Nevertheless, Neville eventually decided to cease the rebellion after Michael Corner was brutally tortured for helping a first year who had been chained up.

The thing is, it helps when people stand up to them, it gives everyone hope. I used to notice that when you did it, Harry.

Retreat to the Room of Requirement

Soon Neville was the sole leader of Dumbledore’s Army. Luna Lovegood was taken off the train to Hogwarts at Christmas and held in detention to guarantee the cooperation of her father. Ginny did not return after Easter after Harry, Ron, and Hermione escaped from Malfoy Manor.

This made Neville the prime target for the Carrows. But when they realized that torture and beatings were not effective in stopping Neville, they decided to target his grandmother to intimidate him. Fortunately, August Longbottom was tougher than they anticipated. She managed to escape, and left the Auror who came after her in hospital.

This made the Carrows realize that they would have to get rid of Neville. Realizing the situation, Neville took refuge in the Room of Requirement, which created a hideout for him. This included a passageway to the Hog’s Head in Hogsmeade so that Neville could get food from Aberforth Dumbledore. The room is unable to create food.

Before long, many other students had also taken refuge in the Room of Requirement. This is where they were when Harry, Ron, and Hermione finally returned to Hogwarts.

Neville and the Battle of Hogwarts

When Harry, Ron, and Hermione showed up in Hogsmeade, Aberforth Dumbledore hid them in the Hog’s Head and was eventually convinced to help them get into the school. He sent a portrait of his sister to call Neville to escort the trip to Hogwarts.

Upon hearing of their return, Neville knew that it was the moment to fight to take Hogwarts back. He sent word to members of the DA and the Order of the Phoenix to come to Hogwarts. He then met his friends and explained to them what exactly had been happening at the school while they were away.

Alecto, Amycus’s sister, teaches Muggle Studies, which is compulsory for everyone. We’ve all got to listen to her explain how Muggles are like animals, stupid and dirty, and how they drive wizards into hiding by being vicious toward them, and how the natural order is being reestablished. I got this one (indicates to a large gash on his cheek) for asking her how much Muggle blood she and her brother have got.

Neville explaining what is happening at Hogwarts, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

While Harry, Ron, and Hermione protested that they were not there to fight for the school, Neville’s instincts were correct. Not long after they arrived to seek the Ravenclaw’s diadem Horcrux, Lord Voldemort descended with his Death Eaters, realizing what Harry was up to.

Neville fought bravely in the first part of the battle. He did not stop during the ceasefire, instead transporting the dead and injured. He ran into Harry at this time, who impressed upon him the importance of killing the snake Nagini in order to be able to defeat Voldemort.

Destruction of the Horcrux Nagini

After Harry seemingly sacrificed himself to Voldemort and the Death Eaters approached with his apparently dead body demanding surrender, Neville was the first to stand up to them exclaiming his support for Dumbledore’s Army. Voldemort chose to make an example of him after a phoenix dropped the Sorting Hat at Neville’s feet when he invoked Dumbledore’s name. Voldemort put him in a full-body bind, and then set the hat on fire and put it on Neville’s head.

I’ll join you when hell freezes over! Dumbledore’s Army!

Neville’s response to Lord Voldemort. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Thankfully, because Voldemort did not have the loyalty of his wand, Neville was able to shake off the bind. Feeling something hard in the hat, he reached in and pulled our Gryffindor’s sword, just as Harry had in the Chamber of Secrets. At this moment he proved himself a true Gryffindor.

Sword in hand, he was able to kill Nagini, the final Horcrux. This lay the path for Harry to finally defeat Lord Voldemort in the Great Hall not long after.

Neville’s Later Life

Directly after the war, Neville worked as an Auror to help restore order to the wizarding world, but it was never his passion. A few years later he got a job teaching herbology at Hogwarts with Professor Sprout. He was also made head of Gryffindor House. Neville was a popular teacher, and many students were keen to hear his tales of Dumbledore’s army.

He also went on to marry Hannah Abbott, who was a student at Hogwarts in his year. She worked for some time in the Hospital Wing at Hogwarts, but left to become the Land Lady of the Leaky Cauldron. Neville lived there with his wife, rather than on school grounds. Rita Skeeter wrote scathingly that Neville indulged in too much fire whisky living at the pub, but this was pure fiction.

The two never had children, but Neville was the godfather of Harry’s younger son Albus, and taught him at school.

Neville Longbottom Personality Type & Traits

The young Neville clearly struggled with confidence, stemming from the illness of his parents, and the devastation of his grandmother, which caused her to place unrealistic expectations on her young grandson. Her decision to force him to use his father’s wand, rather than find one ideal for him, and therefore walk in his father’s shoes was clearly hugely damaging.

It took many years for Neville to learn to trust in his skills and value himself. But along the way, he also learned the value of friendship, humility, and loyalty. But by his seventh year at Hogwarts, he was a confident young man able to make great personal sacrifices to lead his fellow students in a fight for what was right, against immense odds. It certainly helped that he had his own wand by this time.

But Neville never craved the spotlight. He was happy living a quiet life, sharing his knowledge with eager young witches and wizards and helping them through many of the challenges that he himself had faced.

Neville Longbottom Zodiac Sign & Birthday

Neville Longbottom has the same birthday as Harry Potter, 31 July 1980. This means that his zodiac sign is Leo. Neville does not seem like your typical confident Leo. But the reality is that so much of a Leo’s self-image relies on their ego that it is fragile. This may explain why Neville was damaged from a young age.

But Leos also have big caring hearts, and Neville displays this at all times. When he is standing up for his friends, accepting strange presents from his mother, or fighting Death Eaters. He is a naturally warm person with time and energy for anyone who wants it.
