Newt Scamander Early Life

Newton Artemis Fido Scamander, better known as Newt, was born into a British wizarding family in 1897 and is the younger brother of Theseus Scamander. He grew up around magical creatures as his mother bred Hippogriffs. Interested in them from a young age, at seven he was caught dismembering Horklumps.

Newt Starts at Hogwarts and Meets Leta Lestrange

Newt started attending Hogwarts in 1908 and was sorted into Hufflepuff house. He soon developed a friendship with Slytherin student Leta Lestrange as the two bonded over their interest in magical creatures.

They met when Leta was running away from bullies and Professor McGonagall and hid in a cupboard. Newt was already hiding in the cupboard with a raven chick. He told Leta that he was staying over the school holidays to nurse the chick, and she decided to stay as well.

Newt always craved adventure. When he faced a Boggart in Professor Dumbledore’s Defence Against the Dark Arts class, it took the form of an office desk. He turned it into a mechanical dragon. Leta’s Boggart took the form of her dead half-brother Corvus.

Newt gained the friendship of many of the magical creatures that lived on the Hogwarts grounds, including the Bowtruckles.

He received detention for telling Prendergast that “there are no strange creatures, only blinkered people”. Leta set off a dung bomb under a teacher’s desk in order to join him in detention.

Newt Gets Expelled

In 1913, when Newt was in his fifth year, one of Leta’s experiments involving a Jarvey went wrong and endangered the life of another student. She was also in violation of the school rules by having the creature at Hogwarts.

By this time Newt had developed serious feelings for Leta. Rather than let her get expelled, he claimed responsibility and took her place.

Dumbledore argued his case strongly and Newt was eventually allowed to return to school. While this is not explicitly stated in the books or films, he kept his wand and went on to work at the Ministry, which means that he must have finished his education.

Newt Working for the Ministry

During the First World War, Newt was working for the Ministry for Magic on the Eastern Front developing magical defenses. He was trying to use Ukrainian Ironbelly dragons in the fight, but this was abandoned because they only responded to Newt and tried to eat everyone else.

After this was aborted, Newt joined the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. He spent two years in the Office for House-Elf Relations and then transferred to the Beasts Divisions where his expertise saw him rise through the ranks quickly.

Nevertheless, the Scamander family was not impressed by Newt’s line of work, and Newt struggled with Ministry bureaucracy. His brother Theseus was a well-respected Auror.

Newt Writes Fantastic Beasts

Newt Scamander soon came to the attention of Augustus Worme of Obscurus Books. He commissioned the young Ministry official to write the first edition of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Newt jumped at the opportunity because he would be able to travel the world to pursue his passion.

Newt traveled to 100 countries across five continents to document magical creatures and their natural habitats. While he mostly befriended them and gained their trust, he did have to hit the occasional one with a magical kettle in self-defense.

Significantly, he met a young Obscurial in Sudan. Although the witch died from the magic exploding inside of her, he managed to contain the resulting Obscurus in his magically expanded suitcase.

Newt Scamander in New York

Albus Dumbledore sent Newt to Egypt to save an illegally imprisoned Thunderbird and return him to the United States. But this was actually a ruse to get Newt to America as Dumbledore had heard word that the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald was there searching for something.

A series of unfortunate events led Newt to accidentally switch suitcases with No-Maj baker Jacob Kowalski. Creatures escaped from the case causing havoc and ex-Auror Tina Goldstein (who was watching Mary Lou Barebone in the area) became involved.

The three, along with Tina’s sister Queenie, had to retrieve the various escaped magical creatures. Newt showed Tina that his heart was in the right place, but she still had to turn Newt over to the MACUSA authorities for smuggling illegal creatures into the country.

When No-Maj Senator Henry Shaw Jnr was killed, the MACUSA blamed Newt and his creatures. But Newt pointed out that the scars and markings on the Senator’s body could only have been caused by an Obscurus. President Picquery was reluctant to accept this explanation and its implications.

Her right-hand man Percival Graves, however, was very interested in the idea of an Obscurus. He discovered the harmless Obscurus in Newt’s suitcase and claimed that he was responsible for the Senator’s death. Graves argued that Newt was using his creatures to cause disruption and start a war, and sentenced both him and Tina to death.

Fortunately, they managed to escape, but some of Newt’s creatures were still loose in the city, and there was still the question of the Obscurus.

Newt and the New York Obscurus

As they searched for Newt’s lost creatures in New York, they saw an Obscurus flying across Manhattan. While Newt went after it to help the Obscurial, he found that Graves was also on its trail, destroying streets to find the human host.

It turned out to be Credence Barebone, the son of Mary-Lou Barbone, the anti-magic campaigner that Tina had been watching earlier. Soon the American Aurors were also on the boy’s trail, and Newt was trying to protect him.

Newt and Tina eventually found a scared Credence alone in a subway station. Newt explained to him about the Obscurial that he had met in Sudan, and how surprised and pleased he was to meet Credence since most Obscurials die before the age of ten, while Credence was already a young man.

While Credence was temporarily calmed, the arrival of Aurors who resumed their attack agitated him. They attacked him until they thought that they had killed him.

When the Aurors had apparently killed Credence, Greaves started to rant about their actions, which revealed to Newt his true identity. With the help of Tina and his magical creatures, Newt was able to force Greaves to reveal his true identity as the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald. Grindelwald had used human transfiguration to steal the identity of Greaves and track the Obscurus in New York.

With so much of the city having been damaged by the events, Newt worked with the Aurors to use Swooping Evil venom to obliviate the memories of the general population.

Scamander Returns to Europe

Despite developing feelings for Tina, Newt had to return to London, where he was reprimanded by the Ministry for his role in the Obscurus incident. His right to travel internationally was revoked. This meant that he could not visit Tina, but maintained correspondence with her.

His book was published in early 1927 and became a bestseller. He was accompanied at his book signing at Flourish and Blotts by his brother Theseus, Theseus’ fiancée Leta Lestrange, and Newt’s assistant Bunty. The newspapers incorrectly reported that Leta was Newt’s fiancée. This soured the already strained relationship between Newt and Tina.

Newt and Tina Reunited

In May 1927, Gellert Grindelwald escaped while he was being transferred from the United States to Europe.

Shortly after this, Newt learned from a Ministry commission, of which his brother Theseus was part of, that Credence had survived New York and was now believed to be in Paris. The Ministry offered to restore Newt’s travel rights if he would join the Ministry as an Auror and join the hunt for Credence. Newt refused since the Ministry’s plan was to kill Credence.

Soon after this meeting Dumbledore also tracked down Newt and asked him to go to Paris to find Credence. Newt initially refused because of his Ministry travel ban. If he was caught traveling he could be sent to Azkaban.

However, when Newt returned to his apartment, he found Queenie and Jacob there. Newt realized that Jacob was under an enchantment to marry Queenie and removed it, causing Jacob to refuse to marry her as he did not want to get her in trouble for marrying a No-Maj. As Queenie left in anger, she inadvertently revealed that Tina, heartbroken and assuming that Newt was engaged to Leta, was in Paris looking for Credence.

Newt decided to go to Paris, taking Jacob with him, so that the two could resolve their romantic issues. Following a run-in with one of Gellert Grindelwald’s men, who was also in Paris looking for Credence, they were reunited with Tina and went into hiding at the home of Nicolas Flamel, an old friend of Dumbledore’s.

Newt and the French Ministry for Magic

Following these events, Tina and Newt heard that Grindelwald was summoning his followers to a rally in Paris. They decided to go to the rally, but first, they needed to learn who Credence really was. Rumors were circling that he was a member of the Lestrange family. They used Polyjuice Potion to infiltrate the Ministry and find a record box with information about his identity.

Newt had disguised himself as his brother Theseus, who found him inside the French Ministry as he was there with a delegation along with Leta Lestrange. They managed to escape Theseus and find the records room, only to discover that the box they wanted had been removed to the Lestrange mausoleum. But Newt did manage to explain the mistake with his engagement to Tina and win back her trust.

They were discovered again and the Matagots that protect the Ministry were set on Newt, Tina, and Leta. While Newt knew that the Matagots would not hurt them if they did not fight, Leta had already tried to stun one, which caused them to multiply and chase them. The trio did eventually manage to flee.

The three went to the Lestrange mausoleum where they also found Jacob, Leta’s half-brother Yusuf, Credence, and Nagini. Leta stopped Yusuf from killing Credence and admitted that she had caused the death of her brother years earlier and therefore that Credence could not be Corvus Lestrange. She had no idea who he was.

Newt told Leta that she should not blame herself for her brother’s death, but she told him that he had never met a monster that he could not love.

Newt and Grindelwald

Following these revelations, the group went to Grindelwald’s rally. While the rally was relatively peaceful, things got out of hand when an Auror under Theseus’ command infiltrated the rally and killed a witch in front of the group.

Grindelwald knelt by the body and sent his followers away to spread the word. He then cast a circle of black flames that only his supporters could pass. He managed to coax Credence past the flames by promising to reveal his true identity. Newt could not follow. Queenie was also able to cross, leaving Jacob behind.

When Credence and Queenie had disapparated away, Grindelwald set the flames to attack the rest. Leta sacrificed herself to save Newt and allowed all the others to escape. Along with them was Newt’s Niffler, who had taken something valuable from Grindelwald earlier in the rally.

Just outside the rally site, they were joined by Nicolas Flamel, who managed to lead the group in a collective spell to stop Grindelwald’s all-consuming flames.

Newt and Tina

Newt Scamander and Albus Dumbledore

While Newt reunited with Tina, Paris was otherwise a disaster. Not only did Credence and Queenie go willingly with Grindelwald, but Leta was also dead.

The group went to Hogwarts to regroup. Newt’s Niffler had stolen from Grindelwald the blood pact pendant that prevented Dumbledore from battling him directly. Newt gave this to Dumbledore so that he could pursue the fight with Grindelwald.

It took Dumbledore some time to figure out how to destroy the pendant. But when he did in the 1930s, he enlisted Newt to help him start an Alliance army to unite and fight against Grindelwald.

Newt Scamander Later Life

Following the fall of Grindelwald, Newt married Tina and the two had at least one child. We know this because his grandson Rolf would later marry Luna Lovegood.

In 1947 Newt started the Werewolf Register and in 1965 created the Ban on Experimental Breeding. He worked extensively with the Dragon Research and Restraint Bureau, and he also traveled the world to create updated editions of his famous book.

Following the death of Albus Dumbledore, rumors spread that Dumbledore had sent Newt to New York on the trail of the Obscurus. Newt always denied these claims, suggesting it would be absurd to send a Magizoologist rather than someone better qualified. He also admitted that it had been a bad idea to take the suitcase to New York.
