Norbert, or rather Norberta, was a Norwegian Ridgeback Dragon hatched by Rubeus Hagrid at Hogwarts. He was unable to keep the dragon, so entrusted its care to Charlie Weasley.

Norbert Biography

During the 1991/2 Hogwarts school year, Lord Voldemort, with the help of Professor Quirinus Quirrell, was trying to acquire the Philosopher’s Stone. The stone was hidden in the school.

One of the obstacles protecting the stone was a three-headed dog named Fluffy. He belonged to Hagrid, the gamekeeper at the school.

Needing to figure out how to get past Fluffy, Quirrell posed as a dragon dealer. Everyone knew that the part giant was fond of them. Quirrell gave Hagrid the egg to get the information that he needed.

Hagrid kept the egg in his hut, warming it over the fire until it was ready to hatch. Hagrid immediately loved the dragon and christened him Norbert.

The dragon looked like a crumpled black umbrella and had a tendency to bite. Hagrid fed it a bucket of brandy mixed with chicken blood every half an hour.

As the dragon grew, he became increasingly dangerous. Norbert even bit Ron Weasley, who had to go to the Hospital Wing for treatment.

Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger managed to convince him that he would get in a lot of trouble for keeping the dragon. They hatched a plan to pass the dragon off to Ron’s older brother Charlie, who studied dragons in Romania.

Harry and Hermione passed the dragon off to some of Charlie’s colleagues that flew over the school.

When Hagrid met Charlie in person at Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour’s wedding, Charlie revealed that Norbert was actually Norberta, and that she had grown into a fierce and ferocious adult dragon.
