Nymphadora Tonks Early Life

Nymphadora was born in the early 1970s to Ted Tonks and his wife Andromeda. Andromeda was from the noble, pure-blood Black family, but they disowned her when she married Ted. As a result, Nymphadora was excluded from the Black family tree.

From the day of her birth, Nymphadora was able to change her hair color at will. This indicated that she was a Metamorphmagus and could change various elements of her appearance as she wished.

She developed the habit of saying “Wotcher”, which she probably picked up from her father. This suggests that the family was based in South London.

In 1984 Nymphadora started attending Hogwarts, where she was sorted into Hufflepuff. Tonks was known for being a bit of a troublemaker, but she was well-liked by her teachers and showed great promise.

At N.E.W.T. level she must have received excellent grades in Defence Against the Dark Arts, Transfiguration, Charms, Potions, Herbology, Divination, and Muggle Studies, as she went on to become an Auror.

During her Auror training, Alastor Moody took Tonks under his wing. Her metamorphosing abilities gave her a significant edge in concealment and disguise, but she is naturally clumsy and struggled with stealth and tracking.

Tonks finally qualified in 1994, and so was one of the newest Aurors at the start of the Second Wizarding War.

Tonks and the Return of Lord Voldemort

When Harry returned from the cemetery in Little Hangleton with the story that Lord Voldemort had returned, Tonks was one of the few in the Ministry willing to believe him, probably due to the influence of Alastor Moody.

Tonks and fellow Auror Kingsley Shacklebolt secretly joined the Order of the Phoenix, despite Ministry prohibitions in 1995 due to Cornelius Fudge’s fear of Albus Dumbledore. The two worked as double agents, sharing Ministry information with the Order.

In the summer of 1995, Tonks was part of the Advance Guard sent to transport Harry from 4 Privett Drive to 12 Grimmauld Place. Tonks lured the Dursleys away from the house so that they could collect Harry by sending them a fake invitation to the All-England Best Kept Suburban Lawn Competition.

Tonks was excited to meet Harry, who she said looked just as she had imagined. She befriended harry immediately, clumsily helping him pack and doing her best to make him feel at ease.

Tonks was at the head of the broomstick formation on the journey to the headquarters of the Order. She convinced Moody to let them land directly, rather than doubling back.

While Tonks spent most of her time at the Ministry, she visited Order headquarters whenever she could. She was also part of the team that escorted Harry and the Weasleys back to Hogwarts after Christmas on the Knight Bus.

In June 1996, Tonks was one of the members of the Order who arrived at the Department of Mysteries when they heard that Harry had been lured there by Lord Voldemort. They found Harry and five of his school friends battling a dozen Death Eaters.

While Tonks was a useful fighter, she was knocked unconscious by her estranged aunt Bellatrix Lestrange, who then went on to kill Sirius Black.

Tonks Falls for Lupin

The following year the Ministry was forced to acknowledge that Lord Voldemort was back, and it was easier for Tonks to juggle her Auror and Order duties as they often aligned.

Nevertheless, Tonks became withdrawn and depressed over the course of the year. This was reflected in her physical appearance.

Harry thought she looked drawn, even ill, and there was something forced in her smile. Certainly her appearance was less colourful then usual without her customary shade of bubble-gum-pink hair.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

While some, such as Harry and Hermione, thought that she was suffering from the death of her cousin Sirius Black, in reality, she had fallen in love with Remus Lupin. While he returned her feelings, he pushed Tonks away. Werewolves were highly stigmatized in wizarding society and he did not want Tonks to suffer.

Meanwhile, Tonks was also part of the team of Aurors stationed at Hogsmeade to watch Hogwarts castle. This means that she was on the Hogwarts Express when Draco Malfoy beat Harry up and left him on the train helpless under his invisibility cloak. It was Tonks who found him when she saw that he had not exited the train.

She also patrolled the corridors of the school when Dumbledore knew that he would be away.  This meant that she was at the school the night that Death Eaters infiltrated the school with the help of Draco Malfoy.

Tonks Fights the Werewolf

While Draco and Harry were on the Astronomy Tower and witnessed Severus Snape kill Albus Dumbledore, Tonks was down in the castle battling the other Death Eaters. She may have been close by when Bill Weasley was savaged by the werewolf Fenrir Greyback.

Bill did not become a werewolf because Greyback was not in his wolf form during the attack. However, he was horribly disfigured.

His mother Molly had assumed that the young and beautiful witch Fleur Delacour would want to break off her engagement to Bill following the injury. But Fleur was outraged by the suggestion proclaiming that their love was stronger than that and that she was more than attractive enough for both of them.

Witnessing this scene forced Tonks to confront Lupin in front of everyone and emphasize to him that the risk was hers to take if she wanted to be with him. The two started a romantic relationship.

Tonks and Married Life

Tonks and Lupin married in a quiet ceremony in July 1997. This was necessary both due to the stigma attached to werewolves, and because the wizarding war was now reaching a greater intensity.

Tonks unexpectedly became pregnant shortly after the wedding. While she was overjoyed, Lupin was incredibly anxious that his child would be infected with his werewolf genes.

Despite all this, both Tonks and Lupin participated in the operation to move Harry from Privett Drive to the Burrow before his protection expired on his 17th birthday. Both Tonks and Remus flew as protectors for Harry and the six other members of the Order that used Polyjuice Potion to assume his form.

During the ensuing battle, Tonks was pursued by Bellatrix Lestrange, who wanted to kill Tonks as badly as she wanted to kill Harry. Lord Voldemort had ordered her to cleanse her family tree of the Muggle-born impurities. Tonks, who was with Ron, escaped and seriously injured Bellatrix’s husband Rodolphus Lestrange.

While they made it to the safe house at Ron’s Aunt Muriel’s they missed their Portkey to the Burrow, so no one knew if they had made it.

Eventually, they apparated into the air above the Burrow, above its protection, and then crash-landed into the garden. Remus was pleased to see Tonks, but also seemed angry. He was anxious about the safety of her and the baby.

Tonks cried openly when she heard that her friend and mentor Alastor Moody had been killed in the conflict. Nevertheless, Tonks was glowing at Bill and Fleur’s wedding a few days later. This was due to her pregnancy.

Tonks the Mother

Shortly after Bill and Fleur’s wedding, Remus left Tonks. He tracked down Harry, Hermione, and Ron, asking if he could join them and provide protection.

Harry asked him what that would mean for Tonks, and Lupin revealed that he had left her over his fears that he put her and the baby in danger, and that he had cursed her by giving her a child that could be a werewolf like him.

Harry rejected his offer of help and told him that it was cowardly of him to abandon his wife. While this response angered Lupin, he obviously considered Harry’s words. He had reunited with Tonks before Christmas.

During her pregnancy, Tonks stayed with her mother Andromeda, and eventually gave birth to a son just after Easter. She named him Teddy, after her father Ted Tonks who had been killed by Snatchers only weeks earlier.

While Teddy was a Metamorphmagus like his mother, he showed no sign of werewolf traits.

The Death of Tonks and Lupin

When Harry, Hermione, and Ron finally emerged from their secret hunt for Horcruxes and turned up at Hogwarts, the word spread, and their allies made their way to the school. Initially, only Lupin went, leaving Tonks to look after the baby.

But Tonks could not bear to be at home, not knowing what was happening and not helping her friends. She left Teddy with her mother and turned up at the school to make it through the secret passageway.

Tonks immediately sought out her husband to fight at his side. Sadly, both Tonks and Remus were killed during the first part of the battle, before Harry Handed himself over. She was killed by Bellatrix.

Andromeda raised Teddy Tonks with the help of the Potters and the Weasleys.

Nymphadora Tonks Patronus

As an Auror, Tonks had to master casting a Patronus. As a young witch, her Patronus took the form of a jack rabbit. However, when she fell in love with Remus Lupin, her Patronus changed into a wolf form.

Patronuses often seem to have been influenced by love. For example, Severus Snape’s Patronus took the form of a doe, the same animal as Lily Evans’ Patronus.

Nymphadora Tonks Personality Type & Traits

Nymphadora Tonks comes across as a happy-go-lucky person who faces life’s challenges head-on without worrying obsessively. But she was clearly highly intelligent and skilled at magic, and had deep emotions, as seen in her relationship with Remus Lupin.

Tonks’ ability to change her appearance seems to reflect the way that she wore her heart on her sleeve.

Nymphadora Tonks Zodiac Sign & Birthday

Nymphadora Tonks must have been born in 1972/3, but we do not know her birth date. Her personality suggests that her zodiac sign could be Gemini. People born under this sign are highly adaptable and take life as it comes.
