Pamona Sprout Early Life and Career

Pamona Sprout was a British witch who attended Hogwarts in her youth and was sorted into Hufflepuff. She quickly showed an aptitude for Herbology and would return to Hogwarts sometime after she graduated to teach the subject.

Professor Sprout taught in the greenhouses at the back of the castle and used one of the greenhouses as an office. She was most comfortable there.

Professor Sprout was a squat little witch who wore a patched hat over her flyaway hair; there was usually a large amount of earth on her clothes, and her fingernails would have made Aunt Petunia faint.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Pamona was among Dumbledore’s most trusted teachers. He asked her to contribute to the protection of the Philosopher’s Stone while it was at Hogwarts in 1991/2. She used devil’s snare, which will strangle someone, especially if they struggle. The secret is to use sunlight or fire to cause it to retreat.

In 1992/3, Professor Sprout was charged with doctoring the Whomping Willow after it was damaged by Harry Potter and Ron Weasley when they flew into it with an enchanted car. In this year she would also re-pot Mandrakes with her second years. This proved fortuitous as they were needed to make a restorative draught to restore the students that had been petrified by Slytherin’s monster.

Pamona Sprout and the Return of the Death Eaters

Professor Sprout recognized early on that Neville Longbottom had a talent for Herbology. In 1994/5 she told the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, Alastor Moody, about this. However, Moody was in fact the Death Eater Barty Crouch Jnr in disguise, and he used this information as part of his plan to kidnap Harry Potter.

Along with Harry, Cedric Diggory was one of the champions for the Triwizard Tournament. Professor Sprout knew him well and was devastated when he died. She was one of the few that immediately believed Harry Potter and Albus Dumbledore that Lord Voldemort had returned, despite the denials of the Ministry of Magic.

Since the Ministry was trying to undermine Dumbledore in 1995/6, they sent Dolores Umbridge to Hogwarts as High Inquisitor. Like most of the staff, Pamona Sprout did not like Umbridge and resented Ministry interference at Hogwarts.

She was pleased when Harry stood up to her and published his story about the return of Lord Voldemort in the Quibbler. She could not show her pleasure due to the presence of Umbridge, so instead gave Harry twenty points for passing her a watering can.

In 1997, when Death Eaters invaded Hogwarts, Pamona Sprout joined Minerva McGonagall, Filius Flitwick, and Hagrid in holding them off. She then met with her fellow staff members after the death of Albus Dumbledore to discuss the future of Hogwarts. She was strongly in support of keeping the school open.

I am sure Dumbledore would have wanted the school to remain open. I feel that if a single pupil wants to come, then the school ought to remain open for that pupil.

She also supported the idea that Dumbledore should be buried at Hogwarts, as he wanted, despite the fact that this was not customary. She finally cleaned the dirt of the greenhouses off herself for the funeral.

Pamona Sprout and the Battle of Hogwarts

When Death Eaters took over the school following the death of Dumbledore, with Severus Snape as principal, Sprout returned to teach. Like most of the teachers, she was probably concerned with keeping the students safe.

She was still in her nightclothes when Minerva McGonagall’s cat Patronus woke her up to tell her that the battle for Hogwarts was about to start. Sprout arrived to see McGonagall dueling with Severus Snape and driving him out of the school.

She contributed to the defense of the castle, using dangerous plants to hold off the Death Eaters. She and Neville lobbed Mandrakes, Venomous Tentaculas, and Snargaluffs.

After the end of the Second Wizarding War, Pamona Sprout returned to teach at Hogwarts. By 2008, her former star pupil Neville Longbottom had joined the Herbology staff.
