Parvati Patil Early Life

Parvati was born into the Patil family in 1979/80 along with her identical twin Padma. She seems to have come from a wizarding family, as she was already familiar with Pansy Parkinson before arriving at Hogwarts.

When she started at school, Parvati was sorted into Gryffindor House, while her twin sister was sent to Ravenclaw. She quickly developed a close friendship with fellow Gryffindor Lavender Brown. She was less friendly with Hermione Granger, probably because of her overly studious and bossy nature. But the two always got on, and they developed a respect for one another over the years.

Parvati displayed the bravery and kind-heartedness associated with Gryffindors early in her time at Hogwarts. She stepped forward to defend Neville Longbottom when Draco Malfoy stole his Remembrall. This earned her an insult from Pansy Parkinson. She was also quick to tell Professor McGonagall that Harry breaking the rules and flying to retrieve the Remembrall was not his fault.

When Parvati faced the Boggart in Professor Lupin’s class in her third year, her greatest fear was a mummy. This may relate to a childhood experience with a mummy, or represents fear of death, or a tormented life after death.

Parvati and Divination

Parvati began the study for Divination in her third year with her fellow students. She seemed to take to the subject quickly and grew close to Professor Trelawney, a teacher that was disliked by most students.

Trelawney told Parvati that she had the makings of a great seer. Parvati was happy to believe this, and other things said by the teacher. For example, when she told Parvati to beware a red-headed man, she became highly suspicious of Ron Weasley.

Later, when Firenze the centaur joined the Hogwarts staff as a Divination teacher, Parvati was also very enamored with him.

Parvati and the Yule Ball

In her fourth year, Parvati no doubt shared the excitement of the other students about the Triwizard Tournament. While she does not seem to have been interested in Harry Potter, she agreed to attend the Yule Ball with him as he was one of the Champions. Harry asked her after he was rejected by Cho Chang and realized that Ginny Weasley was already going with Neville Longbottom.

She wore bright pink dress roves and gold bracelets and enjoyed the attention she received as one of the star couples. She was eager to dance with Harry, but he was a poor dancer. He also ignored her most of the evening as he was watching Cho Chang.

Unwilling to let Harry ruin her night, she agreed to dance with a boy from Beauxbatons, with who she remained close for some time after the ball. Dean Thomas noted to Harry on the evening that Parvati and Padma were the best-looking girls in the year.

Parvati and Dumbledore’s Army

In her fifth year, Dolores Umbridge arrived at Hogwarts as High Inquisitor and Defence Against the Dark Art professor. Parvati was as unimpressed as the other students by the Ministry’s meddling in the school and the poor quality of the Defence Against the Dark Arts lessons. She was eager to join the DA to learn defensive magic from Harry.

Parvati also showed a rebellious streak during this year. With her sister Padma, she started to sabotage speakers that Professor Umbridge had placed around the castle.

Parvati and the Second Wizarding War

When the Ministry finally acknowledged the return of Lord Voldemort, Parvati had to convince her parents not to pull her and her sister out of school. In the same year, she was disappointed not to be invited to be part of the Slug Club, or to have received an invitation to his Christmas party.

Her year was also disrupted when her best friend Lavender Brown started dating Ron Weasley. While she initially supported Lavender’s crush and relationship, she soon came fed up with their constant snogging and lovey-dovey talk.

While Parvati was not among the members of the DA who received the message to join the fight when Death Eaters invaded the school, she was among those who raised their wands in tribute when Albus Dumbledore was found dead.

She and her sister were forced to return to school the following year, despite the fact that it was under Death Eater control. The Ministry had mandated that all school-age wizards must arrive at Hogwarts. She would have suffered under the new regime in which Amycus and Alecto Carrow taught Death Eater ideals and tortured students who did not conform to their wishes.

Parvati was at the school when Lord Voldemort descended with his Death Eater army, and she chose to stay and fight. She is known to have duelled with the Death Eater Travers and to have helped Dean Thomas by shooting Antonin Dolohov with a Full Body-Bind Curse.

She survived the battle, but it is not known what happened to her in later life.

Parvati Patil Personality Type & Traits

Parvati Patil comes across as intelligent and loyal, plus willing to stand up to bullies and protect the people around her. That doesn’t mean that she was immune from gossiping or occasionally giggling at someone else’s expense. She was clearly intelligent, receiving O.W.L.s in Defence Against the Dark Arts, Divination, Transfiguration, and probably other subjects.

While Parvati was considered a very attractive girl, she does not seem to have been vain. She also took responsibility for her own happiness, for example abandoning Harry at the Yule Ball when it became clear that he had no interest in spending time with her.

She showed great bravery in joining the DA, participating in undermining Dolores Umbridge, and choosing to stay and fight in the Battle of Hogwarts.
