About Penelope Clearwater

Blood StatusHalf Blood
OccupationHogwarts Student Prefect
Zodiac SignAquarius (speculative)

As well as being one of the few people who appreciated Percy’s earnest and ambitious character, Penelope Clearwater was one of the students petrified by Slytherin’s monster when the Chamber of Secrets was opened in 1992.

Hermione Granger had been in the library and had just discovered that Slytherin’s monster must be a Basilisk, a kind of giant snake. She learned that looking into the eyes of a Basilisk kills a person, so when she ran into Penelope Clearwater in the corridors, she warned her.

The two of them tried to make their way to safety using a hand mirror that Penelope had to look around corners. Unfortunately, the two of them did see the Basilisk in the mirror, and this reflected sight caused them both to become petrified.

Penelope, Hermione, Colin Creevy, and Mrs Norris (Filch’s cat) were all later revived by a draught prepared from mandrake root.

Penelope Clearwater & Percy Weasley

Percy and Penelope began dating secretly in 1992, the same year that the Chamber of Secrets was open. Ginny Weasley walked in on the kissing and Percy asked her not to tell anyone, though eventually, she did spill the beans. This probably wasn’t because he was embarrassed to be dating Penelope, but rather because he knew that his brothers Fred and George would tease him mercilessly.

Percy and Penelope continued to date during their final year at Hogwarts, and she revealed a passion for Quidditch. She was very impressed by Harry’s new Firebolt broomstick and asked to hold it. Percy said not to let her as she might sabotage it. She also bet Percy ten galleons that Ravenclaw would beat Gryffindor in an important Quidditch match, a bet that she lost.

The pair seems to have continued seeing each other for a short period after school, as she was one of the few people who would listen to his proposals about magical law enforcement. But they must have broken up, as Percy went on to marry another woman called Audrey.

Penelope Clearwater Personality Type & Traits

Penelope was a highly intelligent girl who rose to the position of Prefect in Ravenclaw house. She probably has great respect for the rules, but was not blinded by them. Penelope believed Hermione Granger when she told her that there was a Basilisk loose in the school. She also had a competitive edge, as seen in her staunch support of the Ravenclaw Quidditch team.

Penelope had an air of confidence, that we see in her interaction with Ron Weasley when he is disguised as Gregory Goyle. He was pretending to be Goyle in order to infiltrate the Slytherin common room and learn about the heir of Slytherin. He mistakenly asks Penelope if she can show him where their common room is. She replies with force and contempt that she is in Ravenclaw.

Penelope Clearwater Zodiac Sign & Birthday

We are never told Penelope’s birthday, but she must have been born in 1975/76 to be in the same year at Hogwarts as Percy Weasley. Fans speculate that she may be Aquarius. People born under this air sign are highly intelligent, but also don’t care what other people think. Penelope was not worried about dating a Gryffindor! They can also have a competitive streak, which Penelope shows when she bets on her Quidditch team.

Why did Hermione say that she was Penelope Clearwater?

We hear Penelope’s name again in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. When snatchers catch Harry, Ron, and Hermione, the latter says that her name is Penelope Clearwater. Why Hermione chose this alias is never explained. But considering Hermione’s analytical mind, she probably had a few good reasons. First, Penelope had already left school, and the snatchers were looking for truants. Secondly, Penelope had curly hair, like Hermione. The two may have looked similar.

Is Penelope Clearwater Muggle Born?

Many assume that Penelope was muggle-born because she was petrified by Slytherin’s Basilisk. The serpent was only supposed to go after muggle-born students. But she may have just been unlucky to be caught in the crossfire when the Basilisk was after Hermione.

The fact that Hermione gives Penelope’s name to the snatchers as an alias suggests that she must have been half-blood. Since snatchers were also rounding up muggle-born wizards, Penelope would not have been a good alias if she was muggle born.

Who did Penelope Clearwater marry?

We are never told who Penelope Clearwater marries. We know that she did not marry Percy Weasley, as he went on to marry a woman called Audrey. However, there is some fan fiction out there that matches Penelope up with Oliver Wood, who was in the same year as her at Hogwarts and was captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team.
