Percy Weasley Early Life

Percy was the third child of Arthur and Molly Weasley, born after Bill and Charlie, and before the twins Fred and George, Ron, and Ginny. He was born at the height of the First Wizarding War. This would have had a significant influence on his upbringing. His two maternal uncles were killed by Death Eaters.

Percy Weasley at Hogwarts

Percy started attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in 1987. He was sorted into Gryffindor like his two older brothers. He took his family rat Scabbers to school with him, not knowing that the rodent was the Animagus Peter Pettigrew in disguise.

Like his older brother Bill, Percy chose to study all five elective subjects in his third year: Care of Magical Creatures, Divination, Muggle Studies, Arithmancy, and Study of Ancient Runes. He may have been given a time-turner to help him make it to all of his classes, and Hermione Granger was a few years later.

Percy was made Prefect in his fifth year and was rewarded by his parents with an owl named Hermes and new robes. His rat Scabbers was handed down to his younger brother Ron. He took great pleasure in escorting the first years to their dorms and announcing his position as Prefect.

He decided to stay at Hogwarts over Christmas during his fifth year so that he could study for his O.W.L. exams. Also, he had started to date the Ravenclaw Prefect Penelope Clearwater secretly. By the end of the year, he had learned 12 O.W.L.s.

Percy and Penelope Clearwater

Over the summer Percy continued to exchange letters with Penelope, but kept this a secret so that his brothers did not tease him. He continued to see her when he returned to school. This meant that he was sneaking around the castle to meet her and behaving suspiciously when Harry, Ron, Hermione, and most of the school were hunting for Slytherin’s heir.

Nevertheless, he also grew concerned for his sister Ginny, who looked unwell during the year. He did not know that she was under the malevolent influence of Tom Riddle’s diary. He forced her to take Pepperup Potion and tried to assuage her fears that Ron’s behavior would get him expelled.

However, when she caught him together with Penelope in an abandoned classroom, he swore her to secrecy. His secret was eventually revealed, and he was teased mercilessly by Fred and George.

He went to Egypt with his family in the summer of 1993 when the family won 700 galleons from the Daily Prophet. Fred and George tried to lock him in a pyramid tomb, but their mother caught them. Over the summer, he was also overjoyed to hear that he had been made Head Boy.

While at School, Molly Weasley charged Percy with keeping Harry safe while the threat from Sirius Black was serious. He would follow Harry around school, much to Harry’s annoyance.

At the end of the year, Percy sat his N.E.W.T. exams. He got excellent grades, allowing him to go on and get a job at the Ministry of Magic.

Percy Starts Working at the Ministry for Magic

Percy’s first job at the Ministry of Magic was in the Department of International Magical Co-Operation under Bartemius Crouch Snr. His attention to detail and perfectionism were clear in his work, such as his assignment to write a dull report on standardizing the thickness of cauldrons.

When he became aware of the Ministry’s plan to hold the Triwizard Tournament at Hogwarts, he teased his siblings that he knew something important and exciting. But he revealed nothing.

Two weeks before the Quidditch World Cup he passed his Apparition test and irritated his family by Apparating downstairs to breakfast every morning. It also meant that he could Apparate to attend the Quidditch World Cup with the rest of his family.

Percy was very embarrassed when Mr Crouch called him Weatherby in front of his family, revealing that his role within the department was not as important as he had implied. Nevertheless, he helped Ministry officials and his brothers deal with the Death Eater display, receiving a bloody nose in the process.

The public was very angry following these events, and Percy had to deal with letters of complaint, including a large number of Howlers.

Percy and the Triwizard Tournament

Before Christmas 1994, Percy was promoted to the Personal Assistant position to Mr. Crouch, despite his junior position. He was probably chosen because Crouch was under the Imperius Curse. The Death Eaters assumed that Percy would not ask too many difficult questions.

He attended the Yule Ball at Hogwarts in Crouch’s place and presided as a judge over the Second Task of the Triwizard Tournament. He came splashing into the water in relief when Harry emerged from the Great Lake with his younger brother Ron.

When it was finally discovered that Crouch was under the Imperius Curse, Percy got into trouble for not realizing that something had been wrong and raising the alarm.

Percy Disowns his Family

After the Triwizard Tournament, Harry returned from the cemetery in Little Hangleton with news that Lord Voldemort had returned. While he was believed by Albus Dumbledore and the rest of the Weasley family, Cornelius Fudge, the Minister for Magic, denied this and claimed that Harry and Dumbledore were lying or delusional.

Despite the trouble he had gotten into previously, Percy was made a Junior Assistant to Fudge and sided with the Ministry in this matter. Percy pleaded with his father not to support Dumbledore and Harry. This caused a major rift between Percy and the rest of the Weasleys.

He said Dad was an idiot to run around with Dumbledore, that Dumbledore was heading for big trouble and Dad was going to go down with him, and that he — Percy — knew where his loyalty lay and it was with the Ministry. And if Mum and Dad were going to become traitors to the Ministry he was going to make sure everyone knew he didn’t belong to our family any more. And he packed his bags the same night and left. He’s living here in London now.

Percy and the Persecution of Harry and Dumbledore

Percy acted as court scribe when Harry was called before the Wizengamot in the summer of 1995 on charges of using magic in front of a muggle. He refused to look at Harry and seemed to agree with Fudge’s extremely biased comments.

After the trial, Percy claimed that Harry got off on a technicality. He ignored his father as he passed him on the way out of the hall. He had previously slammed the door in his mother’s face when she visited him in London.

When Ron became Prefect, Percy wrote a letter to his brother congratulating him. But he also urged Ron to cut ties with Harry. He expressed the belief that his family would realize that he was right about Dumbledore and apologize to him in due course.

He returned the Christmas jumper that his mother sent him every year unopened. Percy did not visit Arthur Weasely when he was in St Mungo’s Hospital after being attacked by the snake Nagini.

In early 1996, Percy was among the Ministry delegates summoned to Hogwarts after Dolores Umbridge discovered Dumbledore’s Army, which enabled her to eject Albus Dumbledore from the school. However, he was sent to report to the Daily Prophet before Dumbledore stunned the other Ministry official and Aurors and made his escape.

Percy Weasley and Lord Voldemort’s Return

When the return of Lord Voldemort was exposed to the wider wizarding world following the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, Percy did not reconcile with his family, probably feeling unable to face them. He continued in his role as Junior Assistant to the new Minister for Magic, Rufus Scrimgeour.

Percy returned to the Burrow for the first time at Christmas 1996, but not of his own will. Scrimgeour claimed that Percy wanted to visit so that he could go to the Burrow and speak to Harry Potter. Percy only spoke to his mother and ended up storming out in a huff.

Percy was the only member of the family that did not attend Bill and Fleur’s wedding on 1 August 1997. But on the same day, the Ministry was overthrown by the Death Eaters. They killed Rufus Scrimgeour and made Pius Thicknesse their puppet Minister.

Percy finally admitted what was happening but could do nothing as he was closely watched. He continued to work at the Ministry under the new Minister but was also looking for a way out. He eventually made contact with Aberforth Dumbledore.

Percy Weasley and the Battle of Hogwarts

Aberforth let Percy know when Harry, Ron, and Hermione arrived at Hogwarts and the call to battle came. Percy apparated to the Hog’s Head and entered via the secret passageway to the Room of Requirement, hoping that he had not missed the battle.

He immediately encountered most of his family there as they were trying to prevent Ginny from joining the battle. The reunion was tense. Percy apologized profusely to his family, and Fred and George, the most vocal in their criticism of Percy, were the first to forgive him.

During the battle, Percy fought alongside his brother Fred. He ended up dueling with Minister for Magic Pius Thicknesse, who was fighting for the Death Eaters under the Imperius Curse. Percy jokingly told the Minister that he was resigning.

Fred was surprised and pleased when his brother made a joke, but this moment of joviality was short-lived. An explosion destroyed part of the pair’s corridor, and Fred was killed.

A grief-stricken Percy refused to leave his brother’s body until Ron and Harry helped him store it safely in a wall niche. He then stormed the battlefield to take out his grief of the remaining Death Eaters.

Percy Weasley Later Life

Percy returned to the reformed Ministry of Magic under Kingsley Shacklebolt as Minister after the war. He became the Head of the Department of Magical Transportation.

The life of a bureaucratic aged him quickly. By the time of the 2014 Quidditch World Cup, when he was just 38, Rita Skeeter noticed that he was grey and balding.

He eventually married a woman named Audrey, and they had two daughters, Molly and Lucy.

Percy Weasley Personality Type & Traits

Percy grew up as a very serious young man, perhaps to counter the chaotic behavior of some of his other siblings. He was very serious about his goals and dedicated himself to achieving them. Percy was also very certain and outspoken in his opinions. He took himself very seriously, which made it easy for his brothers to make fun of him.

Percy’s ambition is probably what caused him to turn his back on his family and align himself with the Ministry for Magic. But a Gryffindor at heart, he found his way back to them.

Percy Weasley Zodiac Sign & Birthday

Percy was born on 22 August 1976, which means that his zodiac sign is Leo. This accounts for his ambition and confidence in himself and his opinions. But he was born at the end of the Leo season as it enters Virgo. This may account for his seriousness and dedication to hard work.
