Remus John Lupin was a wizard who was bitten by a werewolf as a child. Thanks to Albus Dumbledore he was able to attend Hogwarts. There he became best friends with fellow Gryffindors James Potter and Sirius Black.

He was a member of the Order of the Phoenix and worked as Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor at Hogwarts for one year, during which he taught Harry Potter how to cast a Patronus charm. Sadly, he and his wife Nymphadora Tonks died during the Battle of Hogwarts, leaving their baby son orphaned.

Remus Lupin Early Life

Remus Lupin was born in 1960 to Lyall and Hope Lupin. His father worked for the Ministry of Magic, and during the course of his duties, he ran afoul of the werewolf Fenrir Greyback. To get his revenge, he targeted and bit the five-year-old Remus, infecting him with lycanthropy and making him a werewolf.

Remus’ parents took him to many healers and tried their hardest to give Remus a normal life. Unfortunately, at the time, there was no treatment for werewolves. They kept his condition generally secret.

I was a very small boy when I received the bite. My parents tried everything, but in those days there was no cure.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Normally a werewolf would not be able to attend Hogwarts, as parents would be wary of the danger. But Albus Dumbledore was aware of Remus’ situation and made a special exception for him. He also created a secret passage from Hogwarts to the Shrieking Shack in Hogsmeade so that Remus could stay there during the full moon. The Whomping Willow was planted in 1971 to cover the entrance to the passage.

My transformations in those days were — were terrible. It is very painful to turn into a werewolf. I was separated from humans to bite, so I bit and scratched myself instead. The villagers heard the noise and the screaming and thought they were hearing particularly violent spirits.

Lupin and the Marauders

When Lupin started attending Hogwarts he was sorted into Gryffindor. He soon developed a friendship with fellow Gryffindors James Potter, Sirius Black, and Peter Pettigrew. Lupin did not tell them his secret. He was terrified that they would turn on him if they found out.

Every full moon Lupin would make an excuse and go off to the Shrieking Shack. His transformations were very painful, and he would attack himself out of loneliness and frustration.

But Lupin’s friends figured out his secret in their second year, and they accepted their friend as he was. They even spent a few years learning to become Animagi so that would be able to accompany Lupin when he changed into a wolf.

They finally accomplished this in their fifth year. James could turn himself into a stag, Sirius into a dog, and, with their help, Peter into a rat.

When Lupin turned, they would sneak out of the castle under James’ invisibility cloak and through the secret passage under the Whomping Willow. Professor Dumbledore was probably aware of their activity but chose to turn a blind eye to it.

The close-knit group of friends soon started calling themselves “Marauders”, and Lupin was nicknamed Moony. They would often get into trouble, though this was mostly James and Sirius while Lupin tried to keep a lower profile. But the group did make the Marauder’s Map, which let them monitor the castle and achieve their mischief.

Lupin was made a prefect for Gryffindor in hope that he would be able to exercise some control over his friends. He did little to curb his friends’ activities and later admitted that he had regrets about this.

Lupin and Young Snape

Lupin’s frequent absences from school around the full moon aroused the suspicion of the young Slytherin student Severus Snape. He became determined to learn his secret. He was hoping that he could have Lupin, and possibly his friends, expelled.

When they realized what Snape was up to, Sirius played a malicious prank, telling Snape about the Whomping Willow passageway, assuming that he would be terrified when he got to the end and found Lupin in wolf form.

When James found out what happened, he stopped Snape from entering the Shrieking Shack just in time and saved his life, as well as protect Lupin’s secret. This just fed the animosity between Snape and the Gryffindors.

Lupin and the Death of the Potters

Lupin struggled to find work after school because of the stigma attached to werewolves. His friends James and Sirius supported him financially.

All of them joined the Order of the Phoenix together to fight against the threat posed by Lord Voldemort. However, for some reason, they came to distrust one another and suspect them of being spies for the other side.

When the prophecy about a child and Lord Voldemort put the Potters in the sights of the Dark Lord, Lupin was not included in the plans to protect them. He, like everyone else, assumed that James and Lily Potter had chosen Sirius Black to be the Secret Keeper for the Fidelius Charm that would protect their location. So, when their location was betrayed to Lord Voldemort, his guilt was assumed.

In reality, Sirius had convinced the Potters to use the less obvious Peter Pettigrew. When Sirius realized that Pettigrew must have betrayed him, he hunted down his old friend. Pettigrew faked his own death and killed a group of muggles, and framed Sirius Black for his crimes.

Sirius was sent to Azkaban. Remus Lupin assumed that his best friend was guilty for the death of his other best friend.

Lupin Making a Living

After the First Wizarding War, Lupin was forced to fend for himself financially. He was forced to take jobs far below his ability level. He would always leave before his colleagues detected that he was a werewolf.

He gained some hope when Wolfsbane Potion was discovered that could help control the effects of lycanthropy. But the potion was extremely complex and expensive, so he was unable to make it for himself.

Lupin Returns to Hogwarts

Albus Dumbledore stepped in to help Lupin again by offering him the job of Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts in 1993. He accepted on the condition that Potions Master Snape would make the Wolfbane’s Potion for him to keep the students safe.

Unlike most of the professors, Lupin made his way to Hogwarts in the Hogwarts Express. He was sitting alone in a compartment, sleeping, when Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Neville sat with him. Lupin was there with the students when Dementors entered the train looking for Sirius Black, who had recently escaped from Azkaban.

He used a Patronus Charm to expel the Dementors from the compartment and gave the students chocolate to help them recover from the encounter.

Lupin the Teacher

The new Professor Lupin received a muted welcome. Many of the students were not impressed by his shabby appearance, which resulted from his years of hardship.

However, he quickly became one of their favorite teachers. He taught an exciting curriculum that included Hinkypunks, Red Caps, Kappas, Grindylows, Vampires, Werewolves, and Nocturnal Beasts.

His most memorable class involved showing students how to banish a Boggart with the Ridiculus spell. Boggarts take the form of someone’s worst fear, and he taught them how to make the fear amusing with the spell.

He guided all the students through the task. But when it was Harry’s turn to encounter the Boggart, he worried that the Boggart would take the form of Lord Voldemort, and so stepped in front of him. The Boggart transformed into his fear, the full moon, giving an important clue about his identity as a werewolf. Of course, only Hermione Granger picked up on this.

For their end-of-year exam, Lupin prepared an obstacle course for the third years that contained many of the dark arts that they had learned about.

Lupin and Harry Private Lessons

While Lupin assumed that Harry’s Boggart would be Lord Voldemort, it was in fact a Dementor. Lupin informed him that it meant that his greatest fear was fear itself. Harry asked Lupin to show him how to repel the Dementors after he fainted when the Dementors entered the train, and again when they invaded the Quidditch pitch during a match.

Lupin gave Harry private classes in which he taught him the Patronus Charm, using the Boggart to simulate the presence of a Dementor. Though the Boggart only takes on the appearance of the Dementor and does not produce the same feeling of cold and misery.

Lupin also helped Harry when he was caught by Professor Snape with the Marauder’s Map. Snape wanted him to identify whether the parchment was dark magic. Recognizing it immediately, he passed it off as something from a joke shop.

Lupin then confiscated the map and told Harry that he knew what it was and was shocked that he had not handed it in. He kept the map to protect Harry and stop him from putting himself in danger by using the secret passages.

Lupin and the Marauders Reunited

At the end of the school year, Lupin was watching the Marauder’s Map, keeping an eye on Harry to assume that he was safe. He was surprised to see three names streaking towards the Whomping Willow: Ron Weasley, Sirius Black, and Peter Pettigrew. He also saw Harry and Hermione going after them.

Lupin realized what must have really happened on the night that James and Lily Potter died and headed for the Whomping Willow to help.

He arrived at the Shrieking Shack when Sirius had transformed back into a man but had not yet had a chance to tell Harry, Ron, and Hermione the truth. They were also not inclined to believe him. Lupin tried to back up his old friend and begged them to listen.

This is when Hermione revealed to the others that Lupin was a werewolf and could not be trusted. He was impressed that she had figured it out. One full moon when Lupin missed classes, Snape set the third-year students an essay on werewolves. With this information and keen observation, Hermione was able to figure things out, though she chose not to tell anyone.

Eventually, Lupin was able to tell the whole story to the trio. They were finally convinced when Pettigrew was forced to return to human form. Lupin and Sirius were ready to kill Peter, but Harry demanded that they take him up to the castle. He said that his dad would not want his best friends to be killers, and they would need Peter to clear Sirius’ name.

They started to return to the castle, with an imprisoned Pettigrew and an unconscious Snape, who had burst in during all these events, and was incapacitated.

Lupin’s Werewolf Transformation

As the group exited the Whomping Willow and made their way into the open, they realized that it was the full moon, and that Lupin hadn’t taken his potion that day. Snape was delivering the potion to Lupin’s office when he saw the Marauder’s Map open on Lupin’s desk and that Sirius Black was there.

Lupin immediately began to transform. Sirius turned himself into his Animagus dog form and told the students to flee. Sirius prevented Lupin from attacking Harry and Hermione. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but Peter Pettigrew escaped.

These events exposed Lupin’s werewolf secret. He resigned from his position, knowing that parents would soon be writing to complain about the presence of a werewolf at the school.

Harry begged Lupin to stay, but he simply shook his head. But he returned the Marauder’s Map and Invisibility Cloak (which had been lost in the Shrieking Shack) to Harry and promised to keep in touch.

Lupin and the Return of Lord Voldemort

When Lord Voldemort returned, Lupin re-joined the Order of the Phoenix. He was one of the few who believed Harry and Dumbledore that Lord Voldemort had returned at the end of the Triwizard Tournament. Lupin supported the pair while the Ministry of Magic and Daily Prophet were working to discredit them.

He was a member of the advance guard that transported Harry from his home at the Dursleys to Sirius Black’s house, 12 Grimmauld Place, which was established as the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix. Lupin was often at headquarters, but he was also often away on missions for the Order.

Over Christmas, when Arthur Weasley was attacked by the snake Nagini he was sent to St Mungo’s to recover. Remus Lupin visited him there, and also tried to share some consoling words with a wizard who had been bitten by a werewolf and was now infected.

Lupin then escorted Harry, Hermione, and all the Weasleys back to Hogwarts on the Knight Bus with Nymphadora Tonks.

Lupin was with Sirius when Harry contacted him in the fireplace at Grimmauld Place using the Floor Network, Lupin was there as well. Harry wanted to talk about disturbing memories of his father bullying Severus Snape that he had seen. Both Lupin and Sirius tried to convince Harry that James was young and foolish at that time, but that he grew out of it.

Lupin and the Battle of the Department of Mysteries

When Harry and some of his friends were later lured to the Department of Mysteries to be ambushed by Death Eaters, Lupin was one of the members of the Order of the Phoenix that went there to help. Harry had managed to pass a cryptic message to Professor Snape saying that something was happening there, which he passed to the others in the Order.

When Sirius died falling through the veil in the Death Chamber, Remus barely managed to prevent Harry from diving in after him.

Lupin goes Underground

When the wizarding world accepted that Lord Voldemort was back, Dumbledore sent Lupin to live with his fellow werewolves to try and convince them not to side with Lord Voldemort. Lupin was happy to accept the task as it gave him some distance from fellow Order member Nymphadora Tonks.

Tonks and Lupin had developed feelings for one another. But Lupin did not want to pursue the relationship as he did not want to taint Tonks’s life with his werewolf stigma.

I’ve been living among my fellows, my equals. Werewolves. Nearly all of them are on Voldemort’s side. Dumbledore wanted a spy and here I was… ready-made. I am not complaining; it is necessary work and who can do it better than I? However, it has been difficult gaining their trust. I bear the unmistakable signs of having tried to live among wizards, you see, whereas they have shunned normal society and live on the margins, stealing — and sometimes killing — to eat.

Remus Lupin, Harry Potter and the Hlaf Blood Prince

Lupin did return to have Christmas at the Burrow. There Harry shared his suspicions about Draco Malfoy and Severus Snape. Remus Lupin iterated that he trusted Snape because Dumbledore did, and also reminded Harry that Snape had made the Wolfsbane potion for him while he was at Hogwarts.

Lupin and the Death of Albus Dumbledore

Lupin was also among the members of the Order of the Phoenix that made their way to Hogwarts when Draco Malfoy and the Death Eaters cast the Dark Mark over Hogwarts. While he battled with Death Eaters, Severus Snape killed Albus Dumbledore on top of the Astronomy Tower.

While Snape killed Dumbledore at his own request, the Order of the Phoenix did not know about this. They assumed that Snape had betrayed them.

During the battle, Bill Weasley was mauled by the werewolf Fenrir Greyback. Since it was not during the full moon, Bill did not become a werewolf. Lupin was able to help him understand what he would expect.

After the death of Dumbledore, and the way that Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour stood by each other after the werewolf attack, Lupin and Tonks married. They had a private ceremony in the north of Scotland in a local tavern and just witnesses. Tonks fell pregnant not long after the wedding.

Lupin and the Battle of the Seven Potters

Lupin was among the team that worked to move Harry from the Dursleys to the Burrow just before his mother’s protection was due to expire on his 17th birthday. He acted as one of the protectors, escorting George Weasley, who had drunken Polyjuice Potion to look like Harry.

Death Eaters attacked as they began the transport. George lost an ear when he was hit by Snape with the Sectumsempra curse, though Snape was actually aiming at a Death Eater who was about to perform a killing curse of George. While George lost a lot of blood, they made it back to the Burrow in one piece.

When they arrived, Remus wanted everyone to prove who they really were, as it became clear to him that they had been betrayed. He then waited anxiously for Tonks to arrive, as she had been pursued by her aunt Bellatrix Lestrange. Alastor Moody was the only one who did not survive the events.

Lupin warned Harry about showing mercy to his enemies when he learned that he used a disarming charm when battling with the Death Eaters. He also warned him to be careful who he trusted, reminding Harry that his father had died because he trusted the wrong friend.

Harry, the time for Disarming is past! These people are trying to capture and kill you! At least stun if you aren’t prepared to kill!

Lupin during the Hunt for Horcruxes

Lupin was at Fleur and Bill’s wedding when the Ministry fell to the Death Eaters. They protected the Burrow as Harry, Ron, and Hermione made their escape.

He managed to track the trio down to Grimmauld Place. He said that he understood that they could not share the details of the mission that Dumbledore left them, but asked to come along with them as their protector.

Harry rejected the idea, reminding him that he could not abandon his pregnant wife and unborn child. At this moment, Lupin broke down and expressed his guilt for “cursing” his wife and child with his affliction.

Don’t you understand what I’ve done to my wife and my unborn child? I should never have married her, I’ve made her an outcast! And the child — the child…my kind don’t usually breed! It will be like me, I am convinced of it! How can I forgive myself when I knowingly risked passing on my own condition to an innocent child?! And if, by some miracle, it is not like me, then it will be better off, a hundred times so, without a father of whom it should always be ashamed!

Remus Lupin, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Lupin left, and the trio left shortly after. The trio next heard from Lupin when he did an interview on Potterwatch, a radio station for the resistance. He expressed his opinion that Harry Potter was still alive, and also thanked him for speaking sense to him about abandoning his family.

When their child was born, they called him Teddy, after Tonks’s father. Nymphadora’s father Ted Tonks was caught by Snatchers and killed because he was muggle-born.

Lupin encountered Harry again when he was hiding out at Shell Cottage, the home of Bill and Fleur. He asked Harry to act as godfather.

The Death of Remus Lupin

Like many of the Order of the Phoenix, when they received word that Harry had arrived at Hogwarts, he made his way there ready to fight.

Initially, they agreed that Tonks would not fight and would stay with their infant son. But Tonks could not bear to stay away and not know what was happening, so she made her way to the school to join the fight, leaving her son with her mother.

Sadly, both were killed in the battle. Lupin was killed by Antonin Dolohov. He was an easier target because he was weakened by casting protective and concealment charms for his wife and son for weeks.

They were both killed during the first part of the battle. Seeing their bodies was one of the things that motivated Harry to turn himself over to Lord Voldemort.

When Harry used the resurrection stone to give him the courage to face his death, Lupin was one of the loved ones that he saw. He expressed his regret that he would not be there for his son. But he said that he knew his son would understand.

Remus Lupin Personality Type & Traits

Remus Lupin comes across as an intelligent and thoughtful wizard who developed great empathy and tolerance as the result of his own struggles with being a werewolf. However, he also had a lot of self-hatred. He worried about the threat he posed to others, explicitly as a werewolf, and also less obviously by stigmatizing others through association.
