Rowena Ravenclaw is one of the four founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the 10th century and is considered one of the greatest witches of her age. Hailing from Scotland, she was particularly well-known for her intelligence and creativity.
It is said that Rowena chose the site for Hogwarts and its name after being led to the location by a warty hog in a dream. She was then principally responsible for the castle’s design, in particular, its constantly changing staircases.
The students in Ravenclaw are chosen for their intelligence and wit, which interestingly meant that there were many muggle-borns in her house when Salazar Slytherin suggested excluding muggle-borns from the school, so she opposed the action.
Ravenclaw famously created and possessed a diadem that could increase the intelligence of the wearer. But the diadem was stolen by Rowena’s daughter Helena, who wanted to surpass her mother’s fame. As a result of the betrayal, Rowena fell ill and may have died of a broken heart.

Rowena Ravenclaw Personality Type & Traits
Rowena Ravenclaw was known for her intelligence and creativity, and these are also the personality traits and skills that she prized in her Ravenclaw students.
It is noteworthy that she was the one who chose the location for founding Hogwarts and was principally responsible for designing the castle, including its changing staircase, reflecting her creativity.
Rowena was also a very proud woman. When her daughter betrayed her, she kept this fact a secret from everyone, including her close friends and co-founders. But it is also possible that she was more concerned with her daughter’s reputation than her own pride.
When Rowena fell ill, she went to great lengths to see her daughter again before she died but ultimately failed.
Rowena Ravenclaw Zodiac Sign & Birthday
J.K. Rowling never tells us Rowena Ravenclaw’s birthday, so we do not know her zodiac sign. Nevertheless, many fans speculate that she was probably an Aquarius, so with a birthday between January 20 and February 18.
People born under Aquarius and known for their intelligence, creativity, and independence. They march to the beat of their own drum and don’t care what others think.
Their intelligence can make them arrogant, as they tend to assume that they know better than everyone else around them.
Rowena Ravenclaw Diadem
Rowena Ravenclaw created and was the original owner of the Ravenclaw diadem, an important artifact in the Harry Potter universe. The diadem was enchanted to enhance the intelligence of whoever uses it.
The diadem is also at the center of the tragedy of Rowena’s life. Rowena had a daughter, Helena, with an unknown partner, who she educated herself at Hogwarts.
It was difficult for Helena to live in the shadow of her famous mother, so, not long after graduating, she stole her mother’s diadem and planned to use it to surpass her.
Helena hid in the forests in Albania as she worked to transform herself into the most intelligent witch who had ever lived. But, during this time, Rowena fell ill. She was desperate to see her daughter again, so she sent the Blood Baron, a man in love with Helena, to find her and convince her to return home.
When the Baron found Helena, she refused to return with him. Outraged by her rejection, he killed her in a fit of rage and then killed himself for what he had done.
Both returned to Hogwarts as ghosts, with Helena becoming the house ghost of Ravenclaw, known as The Grey Lady, and the Bloody Baron the house ghost of Slytherin.
No doubt Helena’s spirit was tied to Hogwarts by her guilt over her betrayal of her mother, and the Bloody Baron followed his love, Helena.
The Diadem as a Horcrux
The diadem remained hidden in the forests of Albania until a young Tom Riddle charmed the location of the diadem out of The Grey Lady. He retrieved it and defiled it by turning it into one of his Horcruxes.
He then hid the diadem in the Room of Requirement, in his arrogance assuming that he was the only one who knew about the enchanted room (no doubt also designed by Rowena Ravenclaw).
Professor Dumbledore suspected that Tom Riddle applied for the job of Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher in years past specifically to gain access to the castle to hide the diadem.
However, the diadem was eventually destroyed. When Harry and Ron entered the Room of Requirement to try and find and retrieve the diadem, they were followed in by Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle.
In the conflict that ensued, Crabbe let loose a Fiendfyre charm that got out of control, destroying the room and the diadem with it.
Rowena Ravenclaw Patronus
A Patronus is a non-corporeal shield that some talented wizards and witches can generate to protect themselves against dark forces, such as the Dementors. A Patronus will take the form of an animal and reveal something about the personality of the caster.
While we are never specifically told the form of Rowena Ravenclaw’s Patronus, it was almost certainly a Raven, the symbol of Ravenclaw house.
Rowena Ravenclaw Descendants & Family Tree
Rowena Ravenclaw is the only founder who has a child that we hear about, Helena. It seems that Helena did not have any children, which means that she was the last descendant of Rowena Ravenclaw.
No doubt, the children of the other founders were overshadowed by their famous parents and may have had suffered from similar feelings of jealousy and inadequacy as Rowena’s daughter Helena.
Rowena and Helena became estranged when Helena stole her mother’s diadem and hid in Albania. This probably contributed to the weakness that caused her mother to get ill. Despite the betrayal, Rowena wanted to be reunited with her daughter and tried to get her to return.
Unfortunately, the events which followed meant that Helena died shortly before her mother. Rowena’s broken heart at losing her daughter may have contributed significantly to her failure to recover.
Rowena Ravenclaw Portrait
We encounter two states of Rowena Ravenclaw’s portrait in the Harry Potter books. One is in the Ravenclaw Tower, and the other is a bust in the home of Xenophilius Lovegood. She is described as beautiful but also austere and intimidating, with dark eyes and long dark hair.
She must also have had a portrait at Hogwarts, as in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, student Rowan Khanna sometimes retrieves the portrait to tell the History of Magic class about the founding of the school when Professor Binns falls asleep.
How did Rowena Ravenclaw die?
Rowena Ravenclaw reportedly contracted an unknown illness not long after her daughter absconded with her diadem. Her daughter died shortly after Rowena discovered that she was ill, and Rowena may have blamed herself for this.
She sent the Bloody Baron to retrieve her daughter, and who instead killed her. So, it is said that it was a broken heart that Rowena died of.
Rowena Ravenclaw was the first of the founders of Hogwarts to die. She is also the only founder about whom we know the circumstances of her death.
