Silvanus Kettleburn is a British wizard who was born on 22 November sometime before 1927. Like most young British witches and wizards, he went on to study at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He was sorted into Hufflepuff and quickly developed a passion for magical creatures.
After school, he continued to learn about magical creatures. At one point he owned 12 Nifflers. They destroyed his home, his boat, and his favorite replacement leg. This excited Kettleburn, who wanted to get more to see what else they could do.
At some point in the 1920s, Kettleburn met fellow animal enthusiast Newt Scamander. He provided him with important information about Chimaeras for Scamander’s book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
Professor Kettleburn at Hogwarts
It was probably some point after this that Kettleburn earned the role of Professor of Care of Magical Creatures at Hogwarts, while Armando Dippet was serving as Headmaster.
He seems to have been a reckless teacher, that saw him on probation no fewer than 62 times during his Hogwarts career. The most memorable instance was probably when a worm he provided for the play The Fountain of Fair Fortune, turned out to be an Engorged Ashwinder and exploded, starting a fire.
Similarly, in 1969/70, when promising student Patricia Rakepick asked him how to enter the Forbidden Forest undetected, Professor Silvanus told her that she could do so using a broom. He accepted her explanation that she merely wanted to study the magical creatures living there.
By the time Albus Dumbledore had become Headmaster, Kettleburn was more relaxed and experienced. It was also by this time that he had lost the majority of his limbs. Nevertheless, he still had a bed reserved for him in the Hospital Wing for his various creature-induced mishaps.
In 1986/7, he was invited to visit a special Magical Creatures Reserve in Ireland. He was forced to leave his baby Occamy, Squawk, in the care of the Hogwarts Hippogriff Club. When he returned to school, he taught his fourth-year students about bowtruckles, nifflers, streelers, and kneazles. He also trusted the students to help him round up a Chimaera and other magical creatures that had escaped into the school.
In 1993, Kettleburn retired and was replaced by Rubeus Hagrid.
As to our second new appointment: well, I am sorry to tell you that Professor Kettleburn, our Care of Magical Creatures teacher, retired at the end of last year in order to enjoy more time with his remaining limbs. However, I am delighted to say that his place will be filled by none other than Rubeus Hagrid, who has agreed to take on this teaching job in addition to his gamekeeping duties.Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
As a retirement present, Dumbledore presented Kettleburn with a set of enchanted wooden prosthetics, which he hoped would stand up to Kettleburn’s regular visits to dragon sancturaries.
Silvanus Kettleburn moved to Hogsmeade upon retirement, presumably to stay close to the Forbidden Forest. On the night of the Battle of Hogwarts, Kettleburn’s infirmaries meant that he was unable to get to the school. But he did climb up onto his roof and throw Flobberworms at Death Eaters flying overhead. It had little effect but showed the right spirit.
He died sometime before 2014. How is unknown, but hopefully, it was doing what he loved.
