Ted Tonks Biography

Ted Tonks was a wizard born into a British muggle family. He probably only learned that he was a wizard when he received his letter inviting him to Hogwarts. He was probably in Hufflepuff at school, the same house as his daughter.

Ted fell in love with and married Andromeda Black. But Andromeda was one of three daughters from the noble and pure-bred family of Black, alongside Bellatrix and Narcissa. Her family was horrified when she chose to marry a Muggle and disowned her.

Together Ted and Andromeda had a daughter Nymphadora. The Black family never laid eyes on the girl. She became an Auror, and then joined the Order of the Phoenix during the Second Wizarding War.

Ted and Andromeda do not appear to have joined the Order themselves. They probably did not want to put themselves in direct opposition to Andromeda’s sisters. Nevertheless, they let the Order use their home as a safe house when transferring Harry Potter from Privett Drive to the Burrow for the last time in the summer of 1997.

Ted fixed Harry’s broken ribs, tooth, and arms after he and Hagrid crashed into their home while avoiding Death Eaters. Andromeda saw to Hagrid.

When Harry landed in their home, he was shocked to see Andromeda because of the striking resemblance she bore to her sister Bellatrix, a well-known Death Eater.

It was Ted who calmed Harry down, and also calmed his wife when she learned that Death Eaters had ambushed her. He reminded her that Nymphadora had been through worse as an Auror.

Death Eaters interrogated both Ted and Andromeda about the whereabouts of Harry Potter and the location of the Order. They were shaken by the experience but not seriously hurt.

Ted Tonks Death

When the Ministry fell under Death Eater control in August 1997, one of the first things they did was to require Muggle-born wizards to register. Their purpose was to round up and imprison these witches and wizards, claiming that they had stolen their magic from “real” wizards.

Ted did not register on principal, and when he heard that Death Eaters were in the area, he went on the run. He left his wife and pregnant daughter, hoping that his wife’s pure-blood status would protect them.

While evading the Death Eaters and their groups of Snatchers, he traveled with fellow fugitives Dirk Cresswell, Dean Thomas, and the goblins Griphook and Gornuk. When the group discussed Harry Potter, Ted said adamantly that the things that were published in the Daily Prophet were slander and that you had to read The Quibbler to get the real story on Harry.

Eventually, the group was caught by Snatchers led by Fenrir Greyback. Ted, Dirk Cresswell, and Gornuk died while resisting capture.

While Ted’s daughter would have a son, who she called Teddy after her father, both Nymphadora and her husband Remus Lupin died in the Battle of Hogwarts, leaving Andromeda Tonk alone to raise the boy.
