Wilhelmina Grubbly-Plank was born sometime before the 1930s, so she lived through the war with Grindelwald as well as the two Wizarding Wars with Lord Voldemort. She presumably attended Hogwarts in her youth, where she developed her interest in magical creatures.

She returned to Hogwarts in January 1995 when the current Care of Magical Creatures teacher, Rubeus Hagrid, was unable to teach because he had been defamed as part giant by Rita Skeeter. While Dumbledore and many students had no problem with this and wanted Hagrid to stay, the school board stopped him from teaching for a short period.

Her first class with the fourth-year students was to present them with unicorns. A class that was greatly enjoyed by everyone, even the students loyal to Hagrid.

I hope she stays, that woman! That’s more of what I thought Care of Magical Creatures would be like… proper creatures like unicorns, not monsters…

Grubbly-Plank During the Second Wizarding War

She returned again at the start of the next school year when Hagrid was delayed as he was tracking down giants for Dumbledore. Grubbly-Plank took a business-like approach and refused to discuss the potential whereabouts of Hagrid with the curious students.

She cared for Harry’s owl Hedwig when he was hurt returning from London. She seems to have quickly fit in with the other teachers.

It was also in this year that Dolores Umbridge came to the school as High Inquisitor and reviewed the classes of all the teachers. She seemed impressed with Grubbly-Plank’s class. This was in stark contrast to her review of Hagrid’s class later in the year. She treated him as though he could not understand her language and was scaring the students.

While Grubbly-Plank probably left the school when Hagrid returned in November 1995, she may have been called again when Hagrid was driven off school grounds by Aurors.

She may have returned again when Hagrid left the school following the death of Dumbledore and the rise of the Death Eaters in Hogwarts. Headmaster Snape is likely to have considered her a good choice, and she may have accepted out of pressure, and to protect the students. If so, then she probably fought alongside the other teachers during the Battle of Hogwarts.
