When Luca was released in 2021 by Pixar, it was praised for telling a big, heartwarming story with such a small cast – each character leaving their own mark on the film.
Most of the main characters in Luca have had their ages, birthdays, and heights confirmed by various behind-the-scenes members.
However, a few side characters still lack that information, so fans have taken guesses as to what they could be.
Luca Paguro – the film’s title character and protagonist – is 13 years old. He is pretty short in his human form at 5’1″ (154.9 cm).
Luca’s new best friend, Alberto Scorfano, is a year older than Luca at 14 years old. He is also taller in his human form, standing at 5’4″ (162.6 cm).
Giulia Marcovaldo (Luca’s other best friend) is also 5’1″ (154.9 cm) and 13 years old.
Luca is a classical coming-of-age story about a shy sea monster (Luca) who wants to know what is it like to live on the land amongst humans.
But to do so, Luca must learn to be brave enough to break the rules and step outside the only life he has ever known. With the help of a few friends, of course.

Luca Paguro – November 20th

Luca Paguro is only 13 years old in Luca – the perfect age to embark on a life-changing adventure!
He is fairly small for a 13 year old at only 5’1″ (154.9 cm), though this perfectly reflects how shy and unsure Luca is compared to his friends (human or otherwise).
Seeing as the movie is about Luca’s coming-of-age story, it makes sense that he changes drastically as his story progresses.
Once an unsure boy worried about disobeying his parents, Luca gives in to his curiosity when he meets the confident Alberto.
Together they explore the human world, and Luca is forced to push aside his own worries to experience a life much different from the one he knows.
There are several points in the film where Luca stands up to bullies and peers much older and taller than him to protect his friends. But it isn’t until Luca himself hurts Alberto that he understands what it means to be brave.
Alberto Scorfano – September 25th

Alberto Scorfano is a year older than Luca at 14 years old. He is also taller than Luca at 5’4″ (162.6 cm), but because Alberto likes to stand confident and proud, he tends to look even taller both in his human and sea monster form.
Compared to Luca, Alberto has had a very unique childhood for a sea monster. He appears to be an orphan with more experience living on the surface than in the sea.
Though Alberto has remained secluded from most humans all of his life, he likes to think he is very knowledgeable about the human world.
Alberto is eager to act as a tour guide for Luca. He helps Luca overcome many of his fears so they can explore the surface together.
Alberto becomes attached to Luca and forms a close bond with him. But Alberto has never had a friend before, so he must learn to be a good friend.
Giulia Marcovaldo – March 18th

Giulia Marcovaldo may be the same age (13 years old) and the same height (5’1″ (154.9 cm)) as Luca, but they are very different.
Most importantly, Giulia is a human and has grown up around people who are not fond of sea monsters.
However, Giulia and Luca are similar in that they are both considered a little bit weird by their respective communities. In Guilia’s case, this means that she is often bullied.
This motivates Giulia to participate in the Portorosso Cup Race with Luca and Alberto in hopes of making herself liked by the Portorosso community.
Giulia loves art and being creative but is initially unwilling to believe that sea monsters exist.
When she finds out that Alberto and Luca are sea monsters, she is less frightened of them and more worried about their safety.
Ercole Visconti

Ercole Visconti is one of the tallest characters in Luca, standing at 5’8″ (172.7 cm). However, he is fairly lanky with long legs, making him loom intimidatingly over other characters. Ercole is 16 years old in Luca.
Because he is older and taller than most of the children in Luca, Ercole thinks that he has the right to bully and tease them whenever he wants. This is what makes him such an antagonist.
Ercole is nothing without his long reputation of repeatedly winning the Portorosso Cup.
His wins in previous years have only fuelled Ercole’s ego, turning him into a narcissist with a love of control.
So much so that he is willing to seriously harm Luca and Alberto (who are much younger!) so he can continue to be a winner.
Massimo Marcovaldo

Massimo Marcovaldo is the tallest character in Luca at 6″ (182.9 cm) and is the burliest character in the film.
As Guilia’s dad, Massimo is thought to be about 40 years old. He is a typical stocky fisherman with tattoos and an unruly mustache.
When Massimo is first introduced to Luca, his appearance makes it seem like he is the film’s antagonist. But, within a few seconds on screen, it is clear that Massimo is a loving father and kind man.
Massimo does not speak much, preferring actions over words. On the rare occasion Massimo talks, he is listened to and respected.
This is why when Massimo has a change of heart and doesn’t instantly kill Luca or Alberto after they are revealed to be sea monsters, the rest of the town soon follows. He even treats Alberto as a son.
Daniela Paguro

Considering that Daniela Paguro remains a sea monster for most of Luca, it is not until late in the film that she becomes a human and stands at roughly 5’8″ (172.7 cm). In her human form, it becomes clear that Daniela is in her mid 30’s.
To say that Daniela is an overbearing mother to Luca would be an understatement.
She constantly reminds Luca of how dangerous humans are to sea monsters, making it her number one rule that Luca should never go near the surface.
When Luca breaks that rule, Daniela decides to send him deep into the ocean, away from the new friends that he has made.
Her intention is to keep Luca safe, but Daniela doesn’t realize how much she harms him in the process.
Lorenzo Paguro

It is unclear how tall Lorenzo Paguro is in his sea monster form, but once he turns into a human later in the film, he stands shorter than his wife at 5’6″ (167.6 cm). Lorenzo appears to be older than Daniela, probably in his early 40’s.
Unlike his wife, Lorenzo tends to be less concerned about Luca’s safety.
Not because he is a bad Father but rather because he becomes easily distracted, so he doesn’t fully pay attention to what other people are doing.
Lorenzo does make Luca promise not to go to the surface again after Luca disappears the first time but is not as overbearing about Luca’s safety as Daniela.
Ciccio

Ciccio makes up one-half of Ercole’s loyal cronies. He is the shortest child in Luca at roughly 5″ (152.4 cm) but is a lot bigger, making him seem just as threatening as Guido. Ciccio is 13 years old, the same age as Luca.
Because Ciccio idolizes Ercole for his perceived power over other people, Ciccio is willing to do anything that Ercole says.
Even though Ercole is not grateful for this loyalty, only rewarding Ciccio with more harmful remarks.
It takes Ercole nearly killing Luca and Alberto for Ciccio to see how self-obsessed and plain mean Ercole is.
The disillusion that Ciccio held shatters, and he becomes a lot more confident away from Ecole’s abuse.
Guido

Guido is the same age as his fellow henchman Ciccio, making him 13 years old.
He is the taller of the pair at 5’1″ (154.9 cm) and is also much leaner. His appearance is comparable to Ercole, even down to his clothes.
Just like Ciccio, Guido greatly admires Ercole and allows himself to be treated terribly to appease the older boy. But Guido has a lot more personal limits than Ciccio.
He is the first to question his ‘friendship’ with Ercole. Guido’s breaking point is when Ercole tries to kill Luca and Alberto, only stopping when Guido steals the controls to stop him.
Grandma Paguro

Based on how old her daughter Daniela seems, Grandma Paguro is thought to be in her 60’s.
Grandma Paguro appears old with a long tail in her sea monster form, so her height is hard to make out. When human, she is 5″ (152.4 cm).
Grandma Paguro is very open with Luca about the time she has spent and continues to spend on the surface herself.
She keeps this a secret from the rest of the Paguro family as she knows how protective Daniela is. But she encourages Luca to explore the surface and experience something new.
Ugo Paguro

It is unknown if Ugo Paguro (aka Uncle Ugo) is older or younger than his brother Lorenzo, but he is thought to be in his 40’s, too.
Ugo resembles an angel fish, making him stand out from the other sea monsters in Luca. This difference makes it difficult to tell how tall Ugo is.
Ugo lives in the deepest, darkest part of the ocean, as far away from humans and the surface as possible.
It is implied that this is the reason for his appearance, which is terrifying, but Ugo does his best to come across as friendly to make up for it.
After a near-deathly experience concerning the surface when he was younger, Ugo moved to the deeper sea and agrees that Luca should never go to the surface.
