Often in anime, characters use an assortment of powers, magic, and abilities in order to vanquish their foes.
However, some characters resort to brute force, having bodybuilder muscles and combat abilities surpassing others.
Below, we’ve listed 20 muscular men and women from anime, and one thing is for sure, we’d hate to face any of them in hand-to-hand combat!
1. Yujiro Hanma (Baki The Grappler)
For a character often called ‘the strongest creature on Earth’, it’s unsurprising that Yujiro Hanma is on our list for his musculature. With his red, wavy hair, large height, and ogre-like appearance, Yujiro is a fearsome opponent.
He isn’t as tall or as strong as some of the other characters in Baki the Grappler, and has a more athletic physique. Despite this, his muscles still deserve an honorable mention. The reason for this? When Yujiro goes all out in a fight, his back muscles turn into the face of a demon!
2. Sakura Ogami (Danganronpa)
Sakura Ogami trains in order to prove that women are not weak, and is the true definition of girl power!
Coming from her family dojo, Sakura was the only daughter born into her clan in her generation. As a result, she felt obligated to show her worth by becoming even stronger than her male family members and training twice as hard.
Sakura stands out from the rest of her classmates not only because of her muscly physique. The high schooler is sometimes mistaken for a guy due to her huge stature (she is 6’4’’!), loud voice, and harsh demeanor. Despite this she is soft at heart, looking out for her friends.
3. Touichirou Izumida (Yowamushi Pedal)
Some characters take their love of their muscles to new extremes, and Touichirou Izumida from Yowamushi Pedal names his assets! His pectoral muscles are named Andy and Frank. He often leaves his jersey unzipped in order to show them off.
Touichirou is a competitive cyclist and is known for his long lashes and remarkably toned physique. The reason for his muscle gain is intense weight training in order to prepare for the Inter-High competition.
He gave up performing in other road events in order to have the “ideal body” for this competition, showing his desire to win at all costs.
4. Superalloy Darkshine (One Punch Man)
When you only wear a pair of black speedos, you know that your muscles are impressive. Every part of Superalloy Darkshine’s body is covered in muscle, and when he flexes, they appear even bigger!
This allows him to seemingly dwarf opponents when in reality, they only share a small difference in height.
Superalloy wasn’t always so buff, however. When he was younger, he was very weak, frail, and really suffered from his self-confidence before he took up weight lifting.
5. Sofia Velmer (Jormungand)
Sofia Velmer, sometimes just known by the moniker ‘Valmet’, is another lady who is not scared to show off her muscles. She has a thin waist, flared hips, firm buttocks, broad shoulders, and a well-toned and mildly muscular physique.
At the same time, with a curvy and developed frame and being well endowed, she is seen as quite attractive.
Valmet needs to keep in peak physical shape in order to perform her duties as a bodyguard for Koko. However, she also served in the Finnish military before this, so her muscles have served her well in both posts.
6. Alex Louis Armstrong (Fullmetal Alchemist)
Known as the ‘strong-arm alchemist’, Alex Louis Armstrong comes from a formidable muscle men and women family. For example, one of his sisters even bears the name Strongine!
All Armstrong needs to do is simply flex his many muscles for his clothes to rip apart, and when he towers above other characters, this can make him look quite scary!
However, he is a complete softy at heart, often bursting into tears if something catches his emotions. Despite a body built to pack a punch, he also wishes to avoid violence and killing wherever possible.
7. All Might (My Hero Academia)
All Might from My Hero Academia is the embodiment of a stereotypical superhero, with the muscles to match. He is often known as the world’s greatest hero, with his feats of strength.
All Might is also one of the few people able to use the One for All Quirk, and his muscles allow him to do this well.
One For All demands the user to have strong muscles because it is a lot to manage. It might cause the user’s body to be blown apart if they don’t have the required physical strength, which All Might thankfully does!
All this aside, All Might’s true form contrasts with the charismatic superhero persona. He is very weak and sickly, with baggy clothes showing how scrawny he really is without his Quirk.
8. Master Roshi (Dragon Ball Z)
There are plenty of muscular characters in the world of Dragon Ball, however, for our list, we have chosen to feature Master Roshi. The reason being? For an old man, he certainly isn’t your average grandpa!
Master Roshi seems to be a shrunken old man most of the time, but when he wants to optimize his combat powers, he switches to Max Power mode.
This not only gives him some significant muscles, but it also makes him extremely powerful, to the point where even he sometimes underestimates his abilities!
9. Yasutora Sado (Bleach)
Yasutora Sado, also known as Chad, stands taller than his classmates at Karakura High and also boasts muscles. These muscles help him with his Fullbringer ability, allowing him to fight hollows.
However, he also had extreme strength before he gained his powers! Chad was able to take the weight of a falling steel girder using his back, and even attack a hollow that he could not see using a telephone pole!
10. Escanor (The Seven Deadly Sins)
As with a lot of characters on our list, Escanor from The Seven Deadly Sins also has a dramatic transformation.
His power comes from the sun, which means during the day he is incredibly powerful and muscular. This is even to the point where enemies have been frozen in fear by the sheer power that he has!
When the sun sets, so does Escanor’s power, as he becomes a small and slender man, whom you would not assume is capable of such feats.
11. Younger Toguro (Yu Yu Hakusho)
Younger Toguro from Yu Yu Hakusho is one of the show’s main antagonists, and his muscles help him to fit the bill.
When Toguro channels his demon energy into his muscles, his body expands in size and strength. This gives him the physical power to carry things weighing hundreds of pounds.
He’s also super tall, meaning that his brother Elder Toguro can sit on his shoulders and look completely tiny in comparison!
12. Muscular (My Hero Academia)
Another character from My Hero Academia is on our list, and this time it is the aptly named Muscular (Goto Imasugi). Goto’s Quirk ‘Pump Up’ allows him to amp up his own muscular strands to the point that his skin can no longer control them.
All of Goto’s physical talents are massively increased to a superhuman degree, roughly comparable with One For All, thanks to his augmented muscle tissue.
He can cover his body with a whopping 12,000 layers of muscle, meaning that Muscular can use them to overpower his foes and defend against them.
13. Machio Naruzo (Dumbbell Nan Kilo Moteru?)
One of our actual bodybuilders on this list, Machio Naruzo is a bodybuilder and personal trainer. You would not think it from looking at his sweet features and unassuming build, but beware when he flexes!
He goes from normal guy to busting open his clothing with ease, leaving him only wearing speedos! Comically, his head does not change, and looks a little crazy on top of his massive body!
Machio’s name is also a weightlifting pun, ‘macho naruzo’, which means ‘let’s get macho’ in Japanese!
14. Seungah Park (The God of High School)
Seungah Park from The God of High School boasts a muscular physique due to her intense training in practical taekkyeon, an ancestor of the martial art taekwondo.
She wears a modified dobok, a type of martial arts garb. The fact that this is sleeveless shows off her muscle definition.
She is so strong that when she fights, she is known to destroy parts of, if not all of the arena in combat!
15. Thorkell (Vinland Saga)
Considered the strongest Viking by his fellow Vikings, Thorkell is a tall and imposing character. His muscular body is covered in scars from his many battles, and he is in good shape for someone approaching 60!
In and out of combat, Thorkell is a merry, good-natured fellow. He nearly always smiles and laughs. When he is deprived of fighting for an extended period of time, he becomes sad and irritated.
He isn’t really nasty, and he doesn’t appear to relish inflicting suffering on lesser opponents or people. He is only inspired to battle those that are capable of self-defense, such as Vikings and soldiers.
16. Hayato Fūrinji (History’s Strongest Disciple Kenichi)
Hayato Fūrinji carries two names that seem to contrast with each other: ‘the Elder’, and ‘the Invincible Superman’. Despite being old, Hayato is undefeated and it is easy to see why.
You can see his ripped muscles through his robe, and even though he is advanced in years, there is not a grey hair to be found in his blond locks and beard.
He even admits at one point he took on 500 martial artists at once. So for him to still be undefeated means that he really is someone you don’t want to get on the bad side of!
17. Noi (Dorohedoro)
Noi from Dorohedoro is so tall and muscular that a lot of people mistake her for a guy until she speaks or takes off her mask!
Alongside being physically strong, Noi is also hard to take down in a fight. She has healing magic to aid her during combat, to the point where she doesn’t even try to avoid hits.
18. Michelle K. Davis (Terraformars)
Michelle K. Davis from Terraformars has a muscular build even before she transforms. Michelle is able to gain the abilities of a bullet ant through her father’s genes, meaning she has super strength akin to the insect.
Her other transformation into a blast ant gives her steely arms capable of blowing up roaches, and she gains armor from a treehopper!
19. Uvogin (Hunter X Hunter)
Uvogin was the Phantom Troupe’s tallest and most muscular member. His grizzled hair was untamed, with sideburns, long, thick eyebrows, and coarse hair on his shoulders, arms, and chest.
He was naturally hairy and seldom wore a shirt, and he dressed in a wild manner, sporting bearskin apparel and boots.
His power was such that he annihilated the Shadow Beasts and drew Kurapika’s attention as a potential first target.
He could collapse gorges and create large craters with a single blow as a Nen enhancer. Despite Kurapika’s superior defenses, Uvogin was able to shatter his arm.
Uvogin was eventually apprehended and killed by the scarlet-eyed avenger, putting an end to his reign of terror.
We hope you enjoyed our list of muscular characters and bodybuilders, and we know there are many more out there not on our list!
