Nagato, popularly known as PAIN, is regarded as one of the strongest antagonists in the Naruto franchise, thanks in part to his Rinnegan.
The Rinnegan is a unique dojutsu that isn’t awakened in the same manner as the Sharingan and Byakugan. For this reason, fans can’t help but wonder how Nagato got the Rinnegan.
Nagato got the Rinnegan from Madara, who secretly implanted them into Nagato’s eyes as a toddler to facilitate his ultimate goal of resurrecting and casting the Infinite Tsukuyomi. He then tasked Obito with monitoring Nagato and steering him toward the grand world peace scheme.
Madara had finalized his Eye of the Moon Plan for world peace. Years later, he realized he wouldn’t be able to achieve his goals in time. To avoid losing his Rinnegan, he decided to implant them into Nagato’s eyes.
Why Did Madara Give Nagato the Rinnegan?
Madara gave Nagato the Rinnengan intending to retrieve the eyes later for his ultimate world peace plan. Also, because Nagato is an Uzumaki, a descendant of the Senju, possessing huge chakra reserves and meeting the conditions to possess the dojutsu.
Nagato initially thought he awakened the Rinnegan himself because he had no clue someone transplanted them into him.
How Did Madara Give Nagato the Rinnegan?
Madara gave Nagato the Rinnegan through undisclosed means. It was never specified at what age or year it happened or the technique used. We only know he implanted the eyes into him when he was a toddler. Some fans speculate that Zetsu helped transplant the eyes.
How Is the Rinnegan Awakened?
The Rinnegan is awakened by merging the chakra/cells of Indra and Asura reincarnations to produce Hagoromo’s chakra.
Most fans assume that any Uchiha and Senju can awaken Rinnegan by merging their cells/chakra since they are both direct descendants of Asura and Indra, but this is not the case.
The Rinnegan can only be awakened by their reincarnations. Otherwise, Obito would have awakened when Hashirama cells were used on him.
Madara was able to awaken Rinnegan because he was the reincarnation of Indra, and he used Hashirama’s cell, who was the reincarnation of Asura. While Sasuke received charka directly from Hagoromo.
How Did Nagato Awaken the Rinnegan?
Nagato didn’t have to awaken the Rinnegan. Madara had already completed that task for him (waiting for the Senju DNA to manifest and combine with the Uchiha DNA to awaken the Rinnegan). Nagato can control the Rinnegan since he is an Uzumaki, a distant relative of the Senju. Nagato only needed to activate the Rinnegan.
How Did Nagato Activate the Rinnegan?
Nagato activated the Rinnegan after his parents died, then reactivated it to protect Yahiko, murdering the ninjas.
Nagato’s Rinnegan has never reverted to regular eye form or Sharingan form since he obtained it and activated it. The best reason is that Rinnegan does not produce eyestrain, unlike Sharingan and Byakugan. Rinnegan is the perfect eye form, hence does not affect the body.
Was Nagato Born with Rinnegan?
Nagato wasn’t born with the Rinnegan. Madara implanted the eyes into Nagato while a toddler, intending to retrieve the eyes later for his ultimate world peace plan. Nagato was a powerful vessel to bear the eyes, as a member of the Uzumaki clan.
How Did Madara Get the Rinnengan?

How Did Nagato Get Crippled?
Nagato got crippled following his encounter with Hanzo. He summoned the Gedo statue during the struggle, which took a toll on him, leaving his leg severely hurt and his body frail. This reduced his mobility for the rest of his life and rendered his original body virtually defenseless, confining him to a modified wheelchair.
Over time, he established the Six Paths of Pain, which are remotely controlled puppet corpses that carry out his will as part of his “Pain” identity.
Nagato gained back some of his old mobility after reincarnating in the Fourth Great Ninja War. Nagato could move quickly over the battlefield when not hampered, closing the gap between himself and his opponents quickly enough to compel them to retreat.
How Did Nagato Die?
Nagato sacrificed himself using the Rinne Rebirth Justus to revive all the leaf ninja he murdered during the pain invasion. Naruto used his Talk-no-Justus to persuade Nagato to place his faith in him to achieve true peace. Nagato then decided to resurrect everyone he murdered.
